What is the Red Sox BIGGEST offseason need? Power bat?
Transcript
00:00Craig Breslow also addressed what the offseason's biggest needs will be for this team.
00:05We can hear from Bresbot.
00:07We're in the initial stages of kind of evaluating the season and thinking about our approach to 2027.
00:14But it's not kind of hard to look at the composition of our roster and recognize that our starting pitching
00:22was consistently very good.
00:24You know, I think by a handful of metrics, we had the best bullpen in baseball, the best outfield defense
00:30in baseball and an infield defense that showed marked improvement relative to to the last few years.
00:36You know, our offense was inconsistent and, you know, we got on base at a decent clip, but we didn't
00:42really slug.
00:42We didn't hit a ton of home runs, you know, and I'm not sure that we we took advantage of
00:47the unique venue that we play in.
00:49So, you know, I think naturally we're going to spend some time thinking about how we improve our offense and
00:53particularly how we, you know, how we build a roster that can thrive at Fenway Park.
00:58Well, it's about the long ball, Curtis.
01:01They need a power bat.
01:03Could have had one.
01:04Yeah, they could have.
01:05Pete Alonzo was available.
01:06They could have used it.
01:07I know somebody who wanted to do Pete Alonzo.
01:09I would do Pete Alonzo because you could have had Pete Alonzo and Contreras.
01:16I just listen, all the credit in the world.
01:20He's absolutely correct about the pitching.
01:23Can't knock the guy at all on that.
01:25No.
01:26And you're, you know, you're set up with crochet.
01:31As long as he comes back and he's Garrett crochet of old, I don't know what's going to happen with
01:36Sonny Gray.
01:37Maybe he decides, maybe he cools down and decides to keep going, keep playing.
01:43You got Ranger Suarez.
01:45They're well rested for the ALCS.
01:46Oh, wait.
01:47You got stash.
01:49So you really just, you got to find the bat.
01:51And are they willing to, are they willing to spend the money that it is going to take?
01:55I don't, I don't know.
01:56I don't know.
01:58You do know.
01:59What are you talking about?
02:00Well, I mean, I don't know.
02:01Are they closer to like, do they believe that this team is now closer, closer than it was a year
02:07ago?
02:08Stop, stop, stop, stop it.
02:11We're not doing this again.
02:12So they're going to rely on, they're going to rely on a healthy Roman Anthony being a great mouthpiece being
02:17their bat.
02:18Right.
02:19Right.
02:19They'll be in Franklin areas and guys coming up the pipeline.
02:23And, but he said long ball though.
02:25That's not real.
02:26That's not what Roman does.
02:27So you're going to need, if you're saying you still need a guy that can hit, get you to hit
02:31the long ball.
02:32And I don't know, I don't know enough about the farm system.
02:36You're going to need a, you still need a power bat.
02:39Even Roman Anthony comes back and he performs better in your expectations.
02:43He will.
02:44He's still not somebody that really hits for power.
02:47You're still going to need that guy.
02:49That's going to get you 30 plus home runs.
02:51Here's a text from New Hampshire.
02:53One of my favorite States in New England, of course.
02:57Border, border goes, Massachusetts, where I was born.
03:01My adopted home continent, Maine, number two, probably New Hampshire, number three.
03:06I had a Rhode Island.
03:07I am falling in love with Rhode Island.
03:10I got to tell you.
03:11Can we all just agree Connecticut is last though?
03:14Yes.
03:14Yeah.
03:15Yes.
03:15They already think we don't like them.
03:17No, that's true.
03:18Yeah.
03:19Would you say New Hampshire is a top six New England state for you?
03:22Top seven.
03:25But anyway, says, Greg, what are you talking about?
03:29Sonny Gray is out of here.
03:30He's pissed.
03:31Well, I mean, I, people get over things.
03:34Okay.
03:34Where's he?
03:35Stop it.
03:35He's, he'll be back.
03:36$30 million has a lot of sway.
03:39Yeah.
03:39Unless he retires, which, you know, he probably won't.
03:41He's at his best career here.
03:43Yeah.
03:44His best season.
03:45Right.
03:45So he'll, he'll come back.
03:46Uh, healthy Curtis Mead, like, uh, gives you a little bit of help when it comes to the
03:52offense.
03:52Well, yeah.
03:52I mean, you're expecting, but still he's not a power back, right?
03:55If you, and this is the thing that I got on Bresbaugh about before, if you said it's
04:02about getting the long ball, a power back, you still don't have that in the lineup.
04:09Like, so how are you going to answer that question?
04:13That's the number one question.
04:15You still do not have a 30 home run hitter.
04:19Contreras, if he doesn't miss some games, he probably gets there.
04:21But that, that, that would be that he hasn't hit 30 home runs in his career yet.
04:26Well, you got a guy that they were expecting to hit 40 in Fort Myers and Tristan Cassis.
04:31Listen, he's already, he's going to be all ready to go this season.
04:35Tristan Cassis is in the, uh, witness protection program.
04:38No one knows where he is.
04:39Oh God.
04:41I, I mean, this off season is going to be all about the implementation of a new structure
04:48and the way in which teams are built across major league baseball.
04:51And what John Henry will have you believe similarly to, to, uh, Jeremy Jacobs is that
04:56the Red Sox will be in a prime position to take advantage of teams like the Dodgers and
05:03the Phillies and other teams in the Mets that have spent a lot as they enter this new
05:07world order of major league baseball.
05:09So maybe that is how they acquire a bat, but the market will dictate the new terms.
05:15It won't be the Red Sox spending out of their skis to get the guy.
05:18It's going to be so frustrating.
05:20If we have to wait for the season, like it's such ready.
05:23I know like you, you, you, you believe it's a done deal.
05:28Absolutely.
05:29Waiting till June for spring training or whatever.
05:32I bet you two meatball subs that the Red Sox will not be playing before June.
05:37Toasted.
05:38Um, it depends on the spucky is what you would say.
05:41If it's, if it's a fresh roll, I don't need it.
05:43Toasted.
05:43It's because the players, the MLB has such a great union.
05:47Players are going to, they're, they're willing to, you know, hold out.
05:50They're, they're willing to, to deal with a lockout and the owners, other than the Dodgers
05:57owner, what owners don't want a salary cap type of structure where you go, all right,
06:05clearly the Mets owner does, but I don't know if it worked out for him.
06:09He's probably thinking he's probably kicking himself in the ass right now going, Jesus,
06:13I spent all that money and we ended up in what, what were they almost in last place?
06:17Right.
06:18So I think that the majority of the owners would go, all right, we would take a salary
06:23cap.
06:23The players are going to be like, nah, we're not going to do it.
06:26So I believe the, the, the, where they're going to meet in the middle is going to be
06:31the length of contracts that players get those 12, 10, 12, 15 year deals.
06:38The owners are going to say, okay, no salary cap.
06:40Those deals are no longer on the table.
06:43Well, yeah, I'm sure there are some teams like the team that's about to eliminate the
06:47Yankees that is, uh, drooling over the prospect because they're very good at, uh, you know,
06:55what's their payroll?
06:56$87 million, but they're very good at that.
06:58Right.
07:00So, but what do you think the players, and that's what I said, and I, and I'm willing to
07:03bet you, if I had to choose as a player and I had said, I wonder where they would fall.
07:08I'm willing to say the players would probably say, all right, we'll take the 10 year, 12
07:12year, 15 year deals off the table.
07:14We'll set like a max, like they believe in the NHL.
07:16I think eight years is the max you can go and you could still, you know, get the three,
07:21four, 500 million.
07:22And I think the owners would be happy with that.
07:25Shine.
07:25What's next?
07:26Well, Greg, your Boston Bruins lost last night, four to one, uh, dropping two straight games
07:30at that exact score.
07:32Uh, and there were some mistakes made last night by the younger players, but, uh, Marco
07:36Sturm, isn't here to blame them.
07:38Uh, we can hear from, uh, head coach Marco Sturm.
07:41You know what?
07:42Um, yes, uh, probably had a tough night like anyone else, but I won't blame him.
07:47He's a kid, uh, who needs to learn.
07:49Uh, but I think our, our, our, our top guys, you know, games like this, they, they, they have
07:55to be in charge.
07:56I can't ask for a James Higgins, uh, to take charge.
08:00And, uh, yes, he needs to be better, but, um, I think, uh, overall as a group, we just
08:05got to help those kids out and then the kids have to play better as well.
08:09So, uh, so I, I won't, I won't blame my young guys for that.
08:14They're, they're, they're kids.
08:15They need to learn the hard way sometimes, but they need help.
08:20Maybe take the, uh, the Brian Baio approach and start the game like, uh, three minutes
08:26later, shine.
08:28Three minutes in.
08:29Just like, yeah, we're just going to start the clock.
08:31It's, uh, you know, yeah, 15 today.
08:34We're going to run the first, we're going to run the first three minutes off so they
08:38don't score two on us.
08:40One short handed.
08:42Yeah.
08:43One was a shorty.
08:45But are we going to judge Marco Sturm and this Bruins team really based on if they don't,
08:52if they can't get out of the first round again, again, now kind of what we're doing with
08:55this team, Mike, I guess everybody's expectations are they should be a playoff team.
09:01And the question becomes if that's enough for you or if you feel like, oh, they have to win
09:09a series in the playoffs or are they one and done again?
