An international rocket competition in outback New South Wales is fast becoming a testing ground for the next generation of space scientists. Teams from across the country and beyond designed and built their machines before launching them from a remote sheep station near the tiny town of White Cliffs.

00:08Launching thousands of feet into the air before floating to the ground, a successful launch
00:14for the UTS rocketry team.
00:16We're all super happy with the successful flight, could not have gone better.
00:21One of about 15 rockets designed, built and launched by students as part of the Australian
00:26University's rocket competition, with teams from across Australia, New Zealand and as
00:34far away as India competing.
00:36They're making them completely from scratch, they're performing all the verification and
00:41analysis on them, some of them are even making their parts in-house at their universities.
00:46As much as we can like, model and simulate, there's really no telling how it will perform
00:52out on the pad and so we've got to be prepared to deal with any of those challenges as they
00:56come up.
00:56The competition is a recruiting ground for employers in aerospace, engineering, defence
01:02and the university sector.
01:03I've just been asking people so many questions and it's so cool learning.
01:07The site chosen by organisers for its remoteness.
01:11This site allows us to make sure that members of the public and those who are just around
01:14in general are safe while we're out here launching rockets.
01:18Organisers say the competition has almost doubled in size over the past 12 months and they're
01:23hoping it continues to grow for years to come.
01:26Seeing everybody work on these projects, seeing how proud they are when they launch successfully,
01:31but also seeing the complexity and growth every year on year, it's a privilege.
01:39Launching the next generation of a rapidly growing industry.
