The opposition is keeping its pressure on the Tasmanian government over public sector cuts, homing in on voluntary redundancy payments. The government is fixing an error it identified in how recent payments were filed and says workers won't be left worse off, but Labor says it shows how poorly the job cuts have been handled.

00:02Powering up Tassie's young tradies.
00:04The state government's giving apprentices and trainees a travel allowance for off-the-job training.
00:10The more we can encourage our people to really skill up in the trades,
00:16one way of encouraging them is to give them financial support, particularly at this time.
00:20It's wicked, it's so good to see.
00:22Down south, the opposition today also had finances in focus in the form of redundancy payouts.
00:30This is a mistake on a massive, massive scale.
00:33The government wants to cut 1,700 workers from the state service by 2030 as part of its budget repair.
00:41It's received 645 applications for voluntary redundancies so far.
00:47107 have been approved.
00:49But it's identified those payouts were incorrectly filed.
00:54These are people who made decisions about redundancies,
00:57made decisions about their families and their futures based on the information that their employer gave them.
01:02And now we can see Erica Betts got it wrong.
01:04This is a long-standing, long-running practice and there have been some changes that have affected the process.
01:10We can assure people that their post-tax payments will be what they were expecting.
01:16The government's also facing pressure over housing.
01:19A recent report from the state's Peak Housing Construction Body has found Tasmania is building homes at half the rate
01:26it needs to,
01:27to meet a national target.
01:29That's primarily due to a lack of land that's ready to be built on.
01:33If we don't have the water, if we don't have the sewer, there's no way we can get a home
01:37out of the ground.
01:37The government says it's working to unlock more land for housing across the state,
01:42pointing to its recent Southern Tasmania Regional Land Use Strategy as one example.
01:48Cabinet Minister Felix Ellis says the government is committed to delivering the homes that Tasmanians need.
