00:01He would rent a car, make payments for several months, gain the owner's trust, then disappear with the vehicle.
00:08The suspect would allegedly sell the cars to unsuspecting buyers or use them as collateral for loans from moneylenders.
00:16The 29-year-old is now accused of leaving a trail of victims in a vehicle rental scam dating back
00:22to 2018.
00:23Despite multiple arrests, court charges and penalties over the years, he allegedly continued the scheme using increasingly sophisticated methods.
00:33On Monday, four victims sought help from MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head, Datuk Sri Michael Chong.
00:42Chong said police believe many more people could have fallen victim to the same suspect.
00:47He will go and rent the car through either through friends or through contact, we don't know, or through this
00:59advertisement.
01:00Sometimes people are renting the car, they're through advertisement.
01:03So he got all the detail and he will go and rent the car. After that, he will disappear.
01:09So finally, the car was found where? Either the car was given to Alung because he used the car to
01:18go and borrow Alung, or the car had sold to people, we don't know.
01:22One of the victims, 31-year-old Aaron Tiagarajan, said his identity was allegedly misused to dupe three other people.
01:31Aaron said the ordeal left him suffering sleepless nights after police officers repeatedly contacted him, initially believing he was involved.
01:40He said he had no idea how the suspect obtained his identity as he had never lost his MyCard.
02:03Another victim, Abdul Muaz Ahmad Baharuddin, said the suspect rented his high-end multi-purpose vehicle in April and paid
02:12for only three months before becoming uncontactable.
02:15He later discovered that the vehicle had been advertised for sale.
02:19In a similar case, a 31-year-old victim from Penang lost his sedan after renting it to the suspect.
02:26Businessman Chia Hwa Kong, 49, from Puchong, said he also lost possession of his multi-purpose vehicle after renting it
02:34to the suspect for two weeks for RM3,000 early last month.
02:38Chia said the vehicle's GPS had been disabled, but he eventually traced it to Taiping, Perak on September 26 and
02:46had it towed back.
02:47He later learned that the vehicle had allegedly been used as collateral with a moneylender.
02:53All three have lodged police reports.
02:56Chong said dozens of police reports had been lodged against the suspect, who also has multiple previous criminal records.
03:03He urged police to intensify investigations and bring the suspect to justice.
03:09Yes, sir.
03:10So I appeal to all other victims that are all sent a detail to us.
03:14Believe.
