00:00Can the soil in your field actually tell you how much urea you need to use?
00:04For farmers in Kanpur, Dehat, the answer is yes.
00:07And the reason is the soil health card.
00:09Om Prakash, a farmer from Marwari village in Akbarpur,
00:12says that earlier they used to apply fertilizers based on guesswork.
00:15But after getting the soil tested,
00:17they found out that nutrients were lacking in their fields.
00:20They then started applying fertilizers based on the report.
00:23The result? Their costs came down and they also saw an improvement in their crops.
00:39The story is similar for Virender Singh, a farmer from Muktapur.
00:53Deputy Agriculture Director, Harishankar Bhargava explains that the soil health card
00:57tells the farmers which nutrients are deficient in the soil and by how much.
01:01Using the right amount of fertilizer helps reduce costs,
01:04improves yields and keeps the soil healthy.
01:07He also recommends increasing the use of organic manure
01:09made from gav dung, compost and crop residue.
01:12In Kanpur, Dehat, 4,100 farmers have already been provided
01:16soil health cards under the scheme.
01:30The card remains valid for three years
01:32and the soil can be tested again in the fourth year to renew it.
01:35So farming is no longer based on guesswork.
