00:00Here's the gift. Woody Marks left side. He's in. Touchdown Houston. The Texans do it. They go back in front
00:08of Dallas. What a drive.
00:13Indeed, that was a drive. Those were the good times right there when the Texans drove down, scored a touchdown
00:17to take a late lead 30 to 27.
00:20Nine plays, 87 yards, and they cap it off with a Woody Marks six-yard touchdown run.
00:29The very first play after dusting off something I've never seen the Texans run before, a hook and lateral play.
00:36David Montgomery has 19 yards receiving on zero catches in the box score because that's how they score it.
00:43Yeah, they scored. It was a lateral.
00:44So I think it was Dalton Schultz who caught the initial ball and lateraled it to David Montgomery.
00:50So Schultz has like one, you know, he's got a catch in there for whatever it was, you know, seven
00:53or eight yards,
00:54and then lateral to David Montgomery who took it down inside the 10-yard line.
00:58Very next play, that play you just heard, Woody Marks rumbles into the end zone from six yards out.
01:04Texans take a 30 to 27 lead.
01:06Unfortunately, it was not meant to be.
01:08The Texans would go on to lose.
01:09The defense would turn around and give up a long touchdown drive to the Cowboys.
01:13The Texans' Hail Mary opportunity falls short in the end zone, and the Texans drop to 0-4 on the
01:18season.
01:19That was your drive of the game, presented by Victory Live.
01:23Victory Live, connecting the world of live experiences.
01:26So we just heard D'Amico Ryan's press conference.
01:29We're going to hit the phones here in just a second.
01:31So if you're on hold, stay there.
01:32We will let you guys sound off for sure today.
01:35Again, uncharted D'Amico Ryan's era territory at 0-4, and I'm looking at the phone board,
01:40and you guys have thoughts for sure.
01:42So we will get to that.
01:44I just want to point one thing out from the – two things out, actually, from the D'Amico Ryan's
01:48press conference.
01:50And coaches, especially losing coaches, and he's a losing coach right now,
01:55they're going to get everything they say in these press conferences nitpicked and picked apart and whatnot.
02:00But this is long something that I've thought that D'Amico Ryan's kind of manifested itself with the Texans.
02:06His first couple seasons here where it felt like they unnecessarily played a lot of close games.
02:11They had a lot of games where they had their foot on the throat and they let it off.
02:14And remember his first season here, everybody's touting his record in one-score games.
02:18He was like 9-3 in one-score games.
02:21And I'm looking at this, I'm going, that's commendable for sure because that is the NFL to a degree.
02:26But I'm like, man, half these games of these nine wins that he has, these are games that they were
02:30just taking their foot off the gas and allowing teams back in.
02:33And there's something about the mentality of, well, we just got to finish.
02:37Like, no, you got to play better in the third quarter when you came up three touchdowns.
02:40This game was not lost because you couldn't finish.
02:44Part of it was you couldn't finish.
02:45But the only reason that the finish was even a topic is because you guys fell asleep on defense in
02:52a way like I've never seen a D'Amico Ryan's coach team fall asleep before.
02:57That's my biggest thing.
02:58The whole notion of, well, it's all about how you finish.
03:00It's all about how you finish.
03:01Like, it doesn't have to be.
03:02You can be aggressive like they were today offensively in the first quarter, in the first half, attacking downfield.
03:09Well, look, I mean, the offense is a different, you know, aggressive approach.
03:13I mean, CJ stradded the nail on the head.
03:15I mean, this team is going to absolutely have to now because you can't depend.
03:20Right now, you can't depend on your defense to keep you in game.
03:23So this, you're going to have to take advantage of every opportunity that you can offensively with every drive being
03:29aggressive and not kind of playing the clock.
03:31Or playing the scoreboard kind of deal.
03:34You've got to be aggressive, I would think, moving forward.
03:37The interesting thing to your point is on the defense, and we've said this multiple times this year, on the
03:43defensive side of the football, with the exception of Will Anderson, it appears that the team is on their heels,
03:49particularly in the secondary.
03:51It seems like the team in general is on their heels and guessing and caught surprised.
03:59Because I'm going to be honest with you, there were two plays today where CeeDee Lamb, the ball didn't go
04:03to him.
04:03I know it's hard to believe because he had 17 catches a career day today.
04:05It's hard to believe that there were actually opportunities.
04:07But he was screaming wide open a couple of times for touchdowns, and Dak was looking the other way.
04:13So it could have been worse.
04:15Yeah, it could have been worse.
04:16But it's not, you know, it's just, it's, I think the Jalen Petrie, the CeeDee Lamb touchdown to end the
04:23game with Jalen Petrie covering him, that is the, you know, that can happen every now and then.
04:30I get it.
04:31They're good.
04:32They moved CeeDee Lamb around offensively.
04:34They did some really creative things to get matchups and make it to where the Texans couldn't stay in their
04:40defense, in their normal shell defense, which is a too high, or really it's a quarters cover, but it's a
04:45middle open coverage, right?
04:49They made it hard for the Texans to come out of that by how much they were moving CeeDee Lamb
04:54around, right?
04:55The only option would have been Stingley, you follow CeeDee Lamb anywhere he goes on this final drive.
05:01But where I'm going with it is, the one thing that can't happen is CeeDee Lamb down the field with
05:07no help with Jalen Petrie.
05:09No, no, and it's just a pitch and catch back of the end zone.
05:12That's the kind of stuff that typically when you've got, would they get 10 starters back?
05:16And I know the linebackers are out, but those are the kind of things that you, because you're a veteran
05:21defense and because you're so well coached, don't happen to you.
05:24That happens to other people.
05:25That's right.
05:25It don't happen to you.
05:26Right.
05:26And unfortunately, we're seeing those things happen to the Texans and, you know, that's not something that we're accustomed to.
05:33No, no.
05:34The other thing I was going to point out from D'Amico's press conference is the whole, the notion at
05:40the end about, hey, there's, there were a lot of positives, you know, and he did that last week too.
05:44Hey, you know, the, we blocked it up much better on special teams.
05:47And I'm trying to remember we had pancakes on offense in the run game.
05:51And I don't remember a single pancake that was last week.
05:53And this week, he's like, boy, I would have loved nothing more.
05:55How about Nico Collins coming back?
05:56Boy, he was great.
05:57Would have loved nothing more than to highlight Nico Collins, which is what you're doing right now in the press
06:01conference.
06:02I, I just want to point out, I'm not saying it's right or wrong to do that.
06:05I just want to point out that Lovie Smith got killed for that four years ago in 2022.
06:11He got destroyed by people.
06:14The very first game of that season, you remember the tie against Indianapolis and everybody's crushing Lovie in the press
06:19conference because he played it conservatively and played for the tie at the end.
06:23And at one point he shifts gears and he's like, hey, what about OJ Howard?
06:27How about that OJ Howard with two touchdowns?
06:29Remember when OJ Howard was on the team?
06:30Yeah.
06:30How about that OJ Howard?
06:32And Lovie continually would try to accentuate positive things throughout the year.
06:35And he got killed.
06:36So I just, all I do, I just want to point that out.
06:38I'm not, look, D'Amico Ryans is a good coach.
06:41He's had a good run here up until this first four games of this season.
06:45This is going to test him, man.
06:47There, there are some, there are some foundational things wrong with this team right now.
06:52They're not losing because of bad luck.
06:53I've said this from jump.
06:55This is a, when you don't have enough A-hole in you, you know, when you don't have enough, I'll
07:01put my foot on your throat.
07:02When, when you, when you resort to being 0-3 and it's about joyful intensity, when you don't get the
07:08response that you expect, when you don't, as a leader, when you go the joyful intensity route, and the response
07:14is, you lose a game.
07:17And really, given that your defense is as bad as they are, in embarrassing fashion.
07:20Yeah.
07:20Right, that, that, that is hard to come back from.
07:23That's hard to recover from.
07:26And so, we'll see, we'll see where D'Amico goes with it.
07:29I said it last week, you and I in the postgame presser.
07:32I mean, C.J. Stroud showed a little bit of that in him.
07:35C.J. Stroud showed a little bit of, man, I'm pissed.
07:37Yeah.
07:38Man, I, I mean, this is, I'm tired of playing Mr. Nice Guy.
07:41I'm tired of soft shoe and everything.
07:43I, I mean, it's, after, now we're at 0-4, how long is it going to take for, for we
07:48see some of that from the, from the head man, potentially?
07:49He's walked off the field, C.J. has with leads, late in three of these four games.
07:54Yeah, that's right.
07:54Late, he's walked off with leads, and they haven't been able to, the, the side of the football, that D
07:58'Amico kind of big broed a little bit right before the season started, if you remember that.
08:04He was asked about the defense, and he kind of big broed, little broed the, the offense.
08:09Remember he said, you know, the defense I expect to be, yeah, I'm paraphrasing, but he basically said he expects
08:14the defense to be awesome, and we would love for the offense to come along.
08:17Yeah.
08:19It's the opposite right now.
08:20Like, C.J. Stroud is the thing that's got to get the defense.
08:23He's, C.J. Stroud is the one who's, who may have to win games for this team, if, if they're
08:28going to, they're going to start winning games.
08:29All right, let's go to the phones, and let's start it off down in Clear Lake and talk to Bill.
08:33Bill, you're up on the Fifth Down Show here on Texans Radio.
08:37Yeah, I had no idea.
08:38I bit so quick.
08:40Yeah, just a little bit of a back story.
08:42I've, I had season tickets to the Oilers.
08:45I have season tickets to the Texans since day one.
08:49I'll have them until I die.
08:50I love them.
08:51I've been to London to see them play.
08:53I've been to Nashville.
08:55I've been to Jacksonville, Indianapolis, and their heart is in the right place, but execution is lacking, and that is
09:05from the very, very, very, very top.
09:09Example, this week, they wanted to do something to honor the people who had been season ticket holders from the
09:15very beginning.
09:16They sent out an email saying, hey, sign up here for a pregame party.
09:21I went to the website.
09:23The website didn't work.
09:25I waited a day thinking maybe it was too early.
09:28It didn't work.
09:30It never worked.
09:31I finally called the Texans, and they told me that the tickets were already used up.
09:37There were no tickets left.
09:39And I said, well, that's pretty shitty.
09:42Okay, we've got to let you go.
09:43We've got to cut you loose, Bill.
09:46We've got to cut you loose.
09:47You can't use words like that on the air.
09:49Did you get it, Ben?
09:52Okay.
09:52Yeah, good.
09:53Okay, good job, Ben.
09:55Yeah, sorry.
09:56You can't curse.
09:56I know Bill wasn't doing it to be a jerk or anything.
09:59I think he just got a little loose with his language there.
10:02You know, it's funny, that phone call.
10:04Hey, look, if anybody else is going to call in about whatever the season ticket thing they had today was,
10:09and you got complaints, like you're calling the wrong department.
10:11I would really much rather talk football, okay?
10:13That's my request, everybody.
10:15I'm happy to talk about anything that had to do with the between the lines with this football team today
10:20or with decisions made with this football team that affected the roster construction of this team
10:25or coaching decisions made.
10:27I'll be honest with you.
10:28I could give a rip about the season ticket thing that the website didn't work for, all right?
10:32That's just – somebody asked me yesterday –
10:35I think he was going somewhere with that.
10:36Maybe, but then he cursed.
10:38I mean, like, get it together.
10:40Don't fan like you're an 0-4 fan, okay, or a caller, like you're an 0-4 caller.
10:44Let's be better.
10:46Let's be better.
10:46Somebody asked me yesterday at the watch party that we had for college football.
10:50They said, what's it like doing the postgame show when the team's not playing very well?
10:53I said, it's like – it's a little like being a customer service representative for a company
10:58that's putting out a bad product.
11:00That's what that felt like.
11:01It felt like Bill was calling us because the website wasn't working for whatever this party was they were having
11:06today.
11:06That's a good point.
11:07That's the first Texans website pregame party that was supposed to work for the –
11:13that's the first time we've got that complaint.
11:14Yeah, yeah.
11:15And we've been through some tough years now.
11:16Sorry.
11:17And if you're a season ticket older and you haven't gotten your gift yet,
11:19I can't help you with that either.
11:20You know, sorry.
11:22All right.
11:227-1-3-5-7-2-4-6-10.
11:24I'm going to cool off.
11:25Let's take one here, and then when we come back, we will take some more of your phone calls.
11:297-1-3-5-7-2-4-6-10.
11:31This is the Fit Down Show presented by Fifth Third Bank on Texans Radio.
