Court jesters and fools are often seen as harmless entertainers, the sort of fellows who bounce around in floppy, bell-covered hats, juggling apples and cracking jokes to keep a bored king from nodding off. It’s a charming image but it’s also a cleaned-up Victorian fiction. The reality is something far stranger, darker even, but definitely more fascinating. Medieval jesters weren’t just comic relief; they were licenced truth-tellers, political pressure valves, and sometimes dangerously perceptive observers who could say what no one else dared.
Let’s travel back to the Middle Ages and take a look at some of these jesters from across the courts of Europe, and on into Asia, who’s humour wasn’t always gentle. It could be cutting, unsettling, and occasionally lethal to reputations. The bells on the hat were real — but so was the bite behind the grin.
