The origins and nature of the Black Death hold little mystery for us today. But in the Middle Ages, the plague was not only catastrophic, it was also utterly unfathomable. The Medievals possessed no real defences of any kind: no social structures capable of containing it, no medical knowledge to explain it, and no psychological framework sturdy enough to absorb its scale. To them, the disease arrived like an inexplicable cosmic punishment, a force so overwhelming that it seemed to defy both reason and the natural order.
