00:02Sydney Davies says he's seen a lot of crime in the three years he's owned a barbershop in the Hobart
00:07CBD.
00:08It just makes people feel uncomfortable and it puts people on the edge that they know it's happening and it's
00:13so visibly obvious as well.
00:15It's not like they're trying to be discreet, they're quite almost proud about it.
00:19Three Safe City Liaison Officers have started patrolling the CBD during business hours in an effort by the Hobart City
00:26Council to reduce crime in the area.
00:28People have told us that they want a more visible council presence in the city centre and stronger focus on
00:33community safety and engagement and this new team will provide exactly that.
00:38They won't have the power to arrest or fine people like police do. Instead they'll try to proactively reduce crime
00:45by getting to know businesses and community members, linking people up with support services and identifying safety concerns.
00:52It's making those contacts getting name to name and knowing a bit more about their situations perhaps and maybe if
00:59there's a need or a requirement for further help or assistance then we can certainly be able to help them.
01:05Tasmania Police will continue to patrol the CBD and the Safe City Liaison Officers will involve them when needed.
01:12I think it's going to be a great compliment to what Tasmania Police brings to the state of Tasmania having
01:17these liaison officers in Hybar because like I've said they'll be able to communicate more broadly with members of the
01:24community that may not want to come forward and speak to police.
01:26The program's based on similar initiatives in Perth and Melbourne. The City of Melbourne says since June its officers had
01:33nearly 6,000 face-to-face interactions, making 70 referrals to support services and 40 to police.
01:39Business owners hope the program makes a difference.
01:43I think these kids know that they're untouchable and that there's no consequences so it'll be interesting to see how
01:49they're going to negotiate that issue.

01:52We're going to keep it 14.
01:52I'm going to get a little red secret here.
