TAS government announces investigation into youth detention centre escape incident

Tasmania's Premier has announced an investigation into how seven young people escaped from the Ashley Youth Detention Centre last night. All of the detainees are now back in custody after spending the night on the run, with some found as far south as Hobart.

00:00Last night seven of the 18 young people held at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre near Deloraine escaped.

00:09Three staff members as a result of that incident were assaulted by some of the young people involved.

00:15They've been able to get one set of keys and use that to get out of the facility.

00:19They've then stolen a staff member's car.

00:22Police found the car abandoned near Penguin about 10pm last night.

00:27At 1am a detainee was taken into custody.

00:30Police say two others stole a car at Knife Point near Olverston about half past seven this morning.

00:37They were arrested soon after.

00:39Another boy was taken into custody in the North West around midday while two others were arrested in Hobart.

00:46The last teenager was arrested in Smithton this afternoon.

00:50To have seven kids escape from Ashley you need to do more than simply be saying all these kids have to be punished.

00:59You need to be saying why is this happening.

01:01Two of the staff members who were assaulted were treated in hospital.

01:04They've since been released.

01:06There were inexperienced staff on.

01:08They were short staffed.

01:10And it shows that Ashley is not functioning.

01:13Is not safe.

01:14And the government need to take responsibility.

01:17They were put in a very dangerous position last night.

01:21And I'm concerned about that.

01:23Things clearly need to improve.

01:25Police didn't inform the public about the breakout until quarter to eight this morning.

01:30More than 12 hours after it happened.

01:32They also said there was no threat to the community.

01:35Despite an alleged carjacking.

01:37The government says there will be an investigation into how it happened and the response.
