Ed Sheeran has apologised to fans for the “mistakes” he made during a turbulent week and controversy about Macklemore’s removal from his tour.
Sheeran opened his Philadelphia concert at Lincoln Financial Field by acknowledging the criticism surrounding his tour. The controversy began after rapper Macklemore was removed from the remaining US dates of Sheeran’s tour following pro-Palestinian comments made during a performance.
Ed Sheeran Says He Made Mistakes
Speaking to the Philadelphia audience, Sheeran said he had faced criticism throughout his career, but acknowledged that the latest controversy was about an issue far more significant than music.
He apologised to fans and said he had been forced to make difficult decisions during the week, adding that he believed he had made mistakes in handling the situation.
Sheeran also explained that he had never intended to become a political or activist musician. However, he said the ongoing debate over Israel and Palestine had become a humanitarian issue that he could no longer ignore.
Ed Sheeran Addresses Israel-Gaza Conflict
During his emotional speech, Sheeran addressed his position on the Israel-Gaza conflict and explained that performing the concert did not necessarily represent a political position.
He described the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks in Israel as horrific, while also saying that the situation in Gaza was catastrophic, unjustifiable and disproportionate. Sheeran said he was deeply affected by the loss of civilian lives, including children.
Macklemore Removed From Ed Sheeran Tour
Macklemore was removed from the remaining US dates of the Ed Sheeran Loop Tour after making pro-Palestinian comments during his performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Sheeran has maintained that the decision was made by the tour's promoters and venues rather than by him personally. The decision triggered further controversy when other artists and supporting acts withdrew from the tour.
Sheeran Says His Music Should Promote Unity
Sheeran said he has traditionally tried to keep politics away from his music because he wants his concerts to focus on unity, humanity and bringing people together rather than division.
However, he said the scale of the humanitarian crisis made it difficult for him to remain silent.
His Philadelphia appearance therefore became more than a regular concert, as the singer directly addressed the Macklemore controversy, freedom of expression, Israel-Gaza conflict and the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
