Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned the attempted drone attack near Makkah Al-Mukarramah, reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering support for Saudi Arabia and the security of the Two Holy Mosques.
In a statement posted on social media platform X on Wednesday, September 16, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the attempted attack on the holy site of Makkah as a deeply disturbing and unacceptable act. He said the people of Pakistan were saddened and distressed by the incident.
Shehbaz Sharif praised the Royal Saudi Armed Forces for their vigilance, courage and professionalism, particularly their swift response in intercepting the drone. Saudi authorities said the drone was intercepted and destroyed south of Makkah before it entered the city’s restricted airspace.
The Pakistani prime minister also urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalation in the region.
Shehbaz Sharif said the region had already suffered significantly because of ongoing conflicts and stressed that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only sustainable path to peace.
The prime minister further reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong support for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, saying Pakistan stands shoulder to shoulder with the brotherly country in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and renewed attacks involving Yemen’s Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities attributed the drone to the Houthis, while Houthi officials denied targeting Makkah or other religious sites.
