In Sen. Eric Schmitt’s effort to trip up former Trump prosecutor Jack Smith Tuesday, the Missouri Republican seemed to mistake basketball teams playing about 650 miles apart.

00:00Schmidt claimed to have messages proving Smith attended a Hawks basketball game in Atlanta in 2024 during the scandal surrounding
00:07Georgia prosecutor Fonnie Willis.
00:10You will go down as a total dirtbag.
00:13Smith then revealed he was at a basketball game.
00:16I recall going to a University of Maryland basketball game where Caitlin Clark was playing.
00:22Senator Amy Klobuchar offered this explanation.
00:25Could it then be that University of Iowa is the Hawkeyes?
00:28Smith saying he was not at a Hawks game, but a Hawkeyes game.
00:33His investigation was happening in Atlanta, what was happening in New York.
00:37I mean, the number three person at DOJ left DOJ to lead the prosecution in New York.
00:42That doesn't happen. People don't leave that position to go to a be an assistant prosecutor in a city.
00:49Clearly, these cases all happened around the same time, right after President Trump announced he was running.
00:54And this was an effort to get Trump and understanding where Jack Smith was, who he was talking to.
00:58I think is very relevant to all this.
01:02My job here today was to ask questions and get answers.
01:06He's already perjured himself. He did it with his House testimony.
01:08So we'll find out if he perjured himself further.
01:11Look, this guy, this guy was given the task to prosecute Joe Biden's number one political opponent.
01:21That's what happened.
01:23And you do not need to be a rocket scientist or Clarence Darrow to figure that out.
01:27And so the purpose of his testimony today was to get answers.
01:30And he's lied before. We'll see if he's lying again.
01:35His original testimony was that he just had the call logs, the numbers that were being called.
01:40But we know now that that's actually not true, that he had access to contents.
01:43So that was the first lie.
01:45The question then is, how did he go around that?
01:47So members of Congress, under the Speech and Debate Clause, they're not subject to that.
01:53But that's why he sought the NDOs, the non-disclosure orders, so nobody could ever challenge it and question the
01:58constitutionality of what he was doing.
01:59There was no rule.
02:00There was no norm.
02:02There was no law.
02:03He wasn't willing to break to get Trump.
02:06And this can never happen again in this country.
02:08We just can't have that kind of weaponization of the Department of Justice.
02:11I think it's wrong.
02:12And I think Jack Smith is a cautionary tale of what happens when hubris meets opportunity and his just massive
02:19ego took over.
02:20And he was obsessed with putting President Trump in jail.
