Scientists have achieved what once seemed like pure science fiction. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have developed an artificial intelligence system that can translate a person's brain activity into continuous text.
Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, also known as fMRI, the team recorded the brain activity of participants while they listened to hours of podcasts. The AI system, called a semantic decoder, analyzed this data and learned to associate specific brain patterns with corresponding words and thoughts.
When the participants later listened to a new story or imagined telling a story, the AI reconstructed the gist of what they were thinking. It did not translate the thoughts word for word, but it accurately captured the core meaning and ideas of their internal monologue.
This breakthrough could eventually help people who are conscious but unable to speak, such as stroke victims, to communicate with the world again. However, it also raises significant ethical questions regarding mental privacy and the future of human thoughts.
