Scientists with Project CETI are using advanced artificial intelligence to decode the complex communication of sperm whales. These massive marine mammals use rapid patterns of clicks, known as codas, to speak with one another in the deep ocean.
By deploying underwater microphones off the Caribbean island of Dominica, researchers have captured thousands of hours of whale vocalizations. They are feeding this massive audio dataset into specialized machine learning algorithms, similar to the technology that powers human language translation programs.
Remarkably, the AI has already discovered a Sperm Whale Phonetic Alphabet. The system revealed that whales adjust their clicks based on tempo, rhythm, and ornamentation to create distinct linguistic structures. This means their communication is far more complex than we ever imagined.
The ultimate goal of Project CETI is to actually talk back to the whales using AI generated codas. If successful, this breakthrough will represent the first time humans have established two way communication with a non human species on Earth.
