In 2018, researchers at London Moorfields Eye Hospital teamed up with DeepMind to train an artificial intelligence system. The goal was to detect sight threatening eye conditions from three dimensional retinal scans known as optical coherence tomography.

The AI system analyzed thousands of anonymized eye scans to learn the subtle patterns of age related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Within seconds, the software could recommend the correct patient referral pathway with incredible accuracy.

When tested against top human eye specialists, the artificial intelligence matched or exceeded their diagnostic precision. The algorithm made correct triage decisions in over ninety four percent of complex clinical cases.

This breakthrough proves that machine learning can process medical imaging faster than humanly possible. Today, similar algorithms are expanding to hospitals worldwide to prevent avoidable blindness.
