00:00Hello, sports fans. Welcome to Coffee with the Coach. I'm Screaming Scott with Coach Kyle
00:05Winningham. How are you doing, sir? I know it's tough to ask that question right now
00:10after the weekend, but welcome. Thank you, Scott. Appreciate it. We're doing okay. We're getting
00:17through it. Well, devastating loss. Again, last second loss. Iowa Hawkeyes 20-19. Now,
00:26you've had some time to digest the game, which is kind of like buying sushi on sale at a gas
00:33station
00:34a day after it's expired. But what are your thoughts now after that game?
00:40Yeah, well, there's a lot of positives, even though, you know, we did take the loss. Obviously,
00:45never anything like a moral victory. I'm not trying to paint that picture, but there were some positive
00:50things that we did. We moved the ball exceptionally well on the number one ranked defense in the
00:57country. You know, they're number one pretty much across the board, scoring D, total D, all that
01:02stuff. So we're able to do some really productive things. But there was also, you know, some negatives
01:08that showed up, even though we outstatted them significantly, total offense-wise. We didn't play
01:15very well in the red zone. Too many penalties. We lost the turnover battle. It was negative,
01:21minus one in the turnover margin. We didn't capitalize with our four-minute offense when
01:27we had a chance to put the game away at the end. And, you know, we let a kickoff return
01:32out the gate
01:33for 99 yards. So what's that five things? If any one of those five things are in our favor,
01:38we won't win the game. Any one of them. It doesn't have to be all of them, just one of
01:41them. So
01:42we weren't able to make the play that we needed to make to get the win when we needed it.
01:47And they
01:48were able to make the plays on that, what was it, 90 yards in a minute and 50 with one
01:53timeout. So
01:54that's, you know, that's something that we just can't let happen. But credit them. That's, it was
01:59their type of game that, you know, their script for years and years has been, you know, hang around
02:05until the end and find a way to win it at the end. And that's how Iowa football has made
02:09a living
02:09ever since Coach Ferentz has been there. And, and they, they unfortunately were able to do that
02:14to us. Now, do you chalk this up to the maturity of the team being a young Michigan team this
02:21year?
02:23We never want to make excuses. You know, we do have a lot of guys that are playing their first
02:27football this season, but, but no excuses and not trying to find sympathy or have anyone feel sorry
02:33for us. We just didn't make the plays when they were there to be made. We had chances in that
02:37last
02:37drive. You know, we had a couple of interceptions that caromed off, you know, one in particular
02:42that we had a chance to convert. We had some, you know, a couple of costly penalties in that drive.
02:49And, you know, we just, and unfortunately we had an injured player on the last play or the,
02:54there was only two seconds left. They would not have had the ability to spike it because you have
02:58to have three seconds left on the clock in order to spike it. But unfortunately we had a player that
03:02couldn't get off the field. So the ref shut things down and let them regroup and get situated.
03:07But, but again, that's all, you know, could have been controlled by us and should have been
03:12controlled by us.
03:13Now to quote one of the sports commentators that I caught over the weekend, it really,
03:19really hit hard with me. It's like Michigan didn't lose to Iowa. Michigan beat Michigan.
03:27There's a lot of, a lot of, yeah, that's a lot of, there's a lot of truth in that, unfortunately.
03:33And before you can win a game, you first have to not lose it. That's an old axiom. I think
03:37Bill
03:37Belichick said that at one point, but, but yeah, but I guess the positive is, is that we can control
03:44our destiny. I mean, we, if we can get things figured out and start playing smarter football,
03:49cleaner football, then we've got a chance to develop into a pretty good team.
03:53Now, as you mentioned, as said, mentioned the positives, the box scores don't lie a 429
03:59yards, 21 first downs. You had nine minutes more ball possession on two, two for four in
04:07the red zone that, that kind of hurt, but a price Underwood is continuing to grow every,
04:13every single week. It was just sad that we had to lose this game.
04:16He is. And he played his best game of the season and he continues to be on an upward trajectory.
04:23And we, you know, that's a very positive sign for our team as well as the offensive line. I think
04:27the offensive line has gotten better each week in succession and that's really, you know, open up
04:32the running game and you know, it's been, and our run defense was outstanding as well. And, and I think
04:38that's the lowest rush total that Iowa's had in someone said a few years. And so to hold them to
04:4450
04:44something yards defensively was great. The one thing that we have got to start doing is turning
04:50the ball over with our defense. We are not getting the takeaways that we need to get. We've got to
04:55set
04:55this offense up in a short field situation, two or three times a game. And we're not doing that right
04:59now. And, and typically a J Hill defense, you go through the years does exactly that there, you know,
05:05they have a ton of takeaways and, and through four games, we just, the well's been kind of dry in
05:10that
05:11regard. Now this week with the team, how are you going to turn these negatives into a positive?
05:16Well, we've got to keep coaching them and, and impress upon them. First of all, the, the
05:23ramifications of penalties and particularly thoughtless penalties, ones that could have
05:26been avoided. I mean, there's, you're never going to be, we shouldn't say never, but very rarely,
05:30you're going to be penalty free. That just doesn't happen. But if you can keep it to 50 yards or
05:33less
05:34and not shoot yourselves in the foot in critical situations, you know, the timing of the penalties is
05:39penalties are one thing, but it seems that the timing of them have been awful as well. And,
05:43and so we can got to, you know, continue to coach that and clean that up, continue to coach red
05:49zone
05:50production, continue to coach four minute, you know, all those things that, that we didn't do so
05:56well in that game. We just got to keep working with them. Now this week, there's a little brown jug
06:01that's up for grabs. Yeah. Your, your first snatch of a little brown jug and your first official road
06:09game with the boys. What, what's your schedule like when you're going out on the road for the
06:13first time? Yeah. Well, Monday through Thursday doesn't change at all. It's the same routine
06:17Monday through Thursday. Typically in the past, we've liked to travel, you know, teams that I've
06:23been in charge of get to the destination, you know, four 35 o'clock wherever we're going. So we gave
06:30the departure time based on how far of a flight it is and time zones and that type of thing.
06:34But, and there's exceptions, you know, if you go two time zones away, then, then you typically will
06:40leave a day early Thursday, but, but Oregon's the only game that falls into that this year and it's
06:45actually three times zones away. So it's a, it's a no brainer to go out there on Thursday, but, but
06:50we'll get out there in place on five, about five o'clock in Minnesota on Friday afternoon. We'll have
06:56done all our practice and meetings prior to leaving. So when we get there, we have a team meeting right
07:01upon arrival, uh, can we get the lay of the land and, and let them know what the schedule
07:05is for that evening. And then it's an early kickoff. So much like the Oklahoma game, we'll
07:10get up and pregame meals right out of the gate and, and, uh, get on the bus and go over
07:14and
07:14play the game at noon. We'll have 11 o'clock there at noon here.
07:17A fun question. Uh, is there a curfew for the team? So they don't, uh,
07:22Absolutely. Yeah.
07:27We, we absolutely have a curfew and it fluctuates by, by when, uh, we have to get up in the
07:33morning
07:33and we got to get it pretty early. So, so the curfew gets moved up, uh, on this weekend, but,
07:38but absolutely. I don't think there's a team in the country. Like maybe there is, but not
07:41that I'm aware of that has no curfew. And, but you know what, we had a good group of guys.
07:45And if we didn't have a curfew, my guess is they'd probably handle themselves pretty well anyways.
07:49But, but, uh, just so everyone's on the same page, we, we certainly implement a curfew.
07:54Keep them out of the tabloids too.
07:58Here's an interesting fact. You may not know, uh, since you're traveling to Minnesota,
08:03did you know that spam is produced and distributed from Minnesota?
08:09I had no idea.
08:10When is the last time you've ever had spam?
08:13Well, I recruit Hawaii quite a bit and bam is big over in Hawaii.
08:19So I, I, I would have to say it was probably last summer. It was last time I had spam,
08:24but,
08:24but, uh, it's not a staple of mine unless I'm in Hawaii. I usually don't, uh, crack open that
08:29funny shaped can with the lid that you peel off or whatever it is.
08:33I'm old school. I remember when they had the twist thing, you had to die.
08:36That's right. And you put the key on it and twist it around. I remember that.
08:40Do they still have that?
08:42No, I don't think so. I think it's a pull tab now.
08:45Yeah. Probably some lawsuit, probably somebody got cut themselves.
08:49Now, how are you going to keep focused and happy this week and, uh, to keep that positive energy
08:54that, that I know you for?
08:56Well, staying focused is, is no problem at all for me and, and, uh, the staff. Uh, this team seems
09:02to
09:02be very driven and very prideful and they're, they're hurt by the loss. Obviously it, it, it, uh, you know,
09:08that locker room was a tough locker room. One of the, one of the tougher, tougher locker rooms I've
09:12been in post game. And so they, uh, they're competitive. They want to win badly. And I
09:18don't believe we're going to have any problem jumpstarting these guys this week. And one thing
09:21you want to be certainly aware of is never let a team beat you twice. You know, you don't want
09:25to
09:25have a hangover and let, uh, you know, the lingering effects of the past game affect the, the,
09:31the game that, uh, you're heading into. And so that's something that, uh, we've got to make sure
09:35we drive that point home and these guys have been football players for a lot of years. I'm
09:38sure they, they understand that concept. Well, I like to keep positive as you know, with every,
09:43every interview I do with you, but, uh, I, I do ask a favor. It is, is actually my birthday,
09:50uh, this week. So I was wondering if possible, if you do beat Minnesota, uh, could you bring the
09:57little Brown jug to our interview next week to show it off? Is that? I will bring it. I promise
10:03you
10:04get that Brown jug. It's going to be here and, and, uh, happy early birthday to you. How old
10:09are you going to be by the way? Yeah. 62, 62 fresh. You're a youngster. You're a youngster.
10:17Yeah. You're ready to bounce back then. Absolutely. That's what this game is all about. And,
10:22and win or lose, you got to come back with the same resolve and the same work ethic and mentality
10:27that, uh, you know, have every single week. It's a, it's a wash, rinse, repeat profession where
10:32you just, uh, keep going and, and, uh, showing up every day and, and giving it your all.
10:37Nope. Coffee with the coach with Kyle Whittingham, coach K have yourself a great week. Enjoy your
10:43stay in Minnesota. And we look forward to bringing back a W and that little Brown jug stays here in
10:49Michigan. Go blue. And, uh, let's, let's do it. Go blue, Scott. And happy birthday again. There
10:56you go. Thank you, sir.
