00:23On today's episode of Vintage RVs, I'm going to give you a deep dive tour of the 1985 Holiday
00:29Rambler Imperial 33-foot Class A gas motorhome and this motorhome from 40 years ago was top
00:36of the line. It is in excellent shape and it's got some really cool quirks and features that
00:41I'm going to go through with you so join me for the tour. There's something unapologetically raw
00:49about staring down 33 foot of weathered aluminum faux wood veneer and pure 1980s American optimism.
00:57You're looking at a 1985 Holiday Rambler Imperial. This isn't a modern sanitized camper van equipped
01:05with lithium battery banks, Scandinavian minimalism. No, this is a rolling cathedral of shag carpet,
01:13brass fixtures and raw carbonated horsepower. A relic from an era when luxury meant looking like
01:19a mobile steakhouse lounge. If Cousin Eddie had hit a scratch off lottery instead of dragging that rusty
01:26smoke belching rig into Clark Griswold's driveway, this is exactly what it would have pulled up in.
01:33It's got the unmistakable swagger of a blue collar king who suddenly came into money and decided he
01:41needed two rear roof ACs, a full set of plush captain's chairs and a bathroom big enough to empty the
01:48holding tanks with genuine pride. Step inside with me, take a breath. This distinct vintage blend of
01:54age old cabinetry, velour upholstery and four decades of highway memories. Today we're going to do a full
02:02point of view tour to see how the open road used to feel when the gas was cheap, the styling
02:08was loud
02:08and the road trip was an absolute adventure. Let's get to it. This is built on the Chevrolet P30 chassis.
02:19Steel frame, aluminum sidewall body, Chevrolet big block 454 engine and tandem axle. These chassis were pretty
02:33lightweight back then, so you needed that tag axle to distribute the weight. This is for sale in East
02:42Brunswick, New Jersey. $13,500 and it runs and drives. I'll show you all the cool things about it.
02:51So it's got a split windshield up front, at one point had covers over the windshield,
02:55that would snap in from the outside. Sona added Banks power at one point, upgraded the engine a little
03:04bit and they added carbon fiber to make it drive faster. Got a little crack in the windshield here.
03:12The wipers are separate. You could do left or right or turn both switches on. I'm not sure why you
03:20would
03:20want them separate, but they are. There's an antenna atop and it's got this really cool
03:27stainless steel front grille. That signature look of motorhomes from the era. Most of them just have
03:37flat fronts now. Isn't this more aerodynamic? It's got the dual headlights, stacks, high beam,
03:45low beam. And you push these and they pop out somehow. Just like that. And you could take this
03:55grille down. Ooh, jump boxes in there. That means we could try to start it. And you can push this
04:05and twist
04:06and this. And you can lift it up somehow. There you go. It gives you access to check your vitals.
04:18Oil fill, dipstick,
04:20radiator overflow, air conditioning, the radiators behind that, power steering, everything is right here.
04:30And it's not all chewed up by rats and mice. Engine batteries over here.
04:39Aluminum front bumper.
04:44This has airbags in the suspension so you can pump them up.
04:50And it's a low profile motorhome. So I would guess it's about 10 and a half feet, under 11 feet.
04:59It has power leveling jacks. A little kickstand kicks it up. Hydraulic fluid pumps to them.
05:09Underneath is remarkably rust free.
05:15Goodyear tires.
05:19And look, let's see if we could find a DOT date maybe somewhere on here.
05:29These are 19 and a half if you're curious.
05:32But I don't see the date. Let's move on. There's little steps here to get up into the driver's area.
05:39It's got a heated mirror. It's a pretty high-end coach back in the day.
05:47And a driver's door. It's got the slider window so you could pay your tolls.
05:57Ashtray.
06:00Handle.
06:02Little pocket.
06:04And a strap so you don't over-extend. But look at this. It goes all the way to here.
06:09So maybe you could undo that if you wanted to swing the door all the way out.
06:13If you wanted to cherry pick an engine out of it.
06:16There's the controls for the hydraulic jacks. They're all independent.
06:21It's got some really cool thick green carpet.
06:26Holley Rambler.
06:27GVWR 16,500.
06:30It was built on 730 of 1984.
06:34I wouldn't be surprised if the chassis is a 1983 and they built this in 1984 as a 1985.
06:45That could happen. Chassis could be a couple years older.
06:48Fuse panel over here.
06:49And then look at that cool cockpit. We'll look at that more when we get inside.
06:53You want to get in? Look at this. You put your foot down.
06:57Pull out here and you're up into the coach.
07:03This over here is the rear batteries, the coach batteries.
07:08And this does have an auxiliary start. So if you run the engine battery down,
07:11you could jump start off the back batteries.
07:13They're dead. So I grabbed a jump box so I could power up the coach.
07:18In here is a gasoline generator. It's a Kohler.
07:227,000. Ooh. Look at this. This clips up.
07:27So you can work on it. I wouldn't trust that it would just not fall off.
07:46It's getting fuel up there. Pretty cool.
07:51Maybe I want to give it a little squirt.
08:03The battery's a little low. Maybe I over-cranked it.
08:06All right. Water heater over here.
08:09There you go. It's got an anti-rod in it.
08:13Electronic ignition. A little six-gallon model.
08:17You get the exhaust for the generator.
08:20Exhaust for the engine.
08:23And then the rear.
08:24Okay.
08:27And then over here
08:31is the waste discharge for the gray waste tank.
08:35You have to have a separate waste hose tube to operate the black waste tank.
08:41Cooktop ventilation over here.
08:44Dometic refrigerator ventilation. They did a retrofit of a newer style fridge.
08:48So you can see the blocks of wood that raises it up.
08:51It's pretty darn clean in here.
08:53This is the number one cause of RV fires.
08:55You got to keep that area clean.
08:57Keep your propane off when you're driving.
08:59And the body is aluminum clad.
09:02It's the only reason why this motorhome is still here.
09:06Not rotted out and all delaminated.
09:08It's got this cool aluminum insert.
09:11This little brass rail here down the side.
09:15And the little skirts over the tag axle.
09:21It's equipped with the Moride rubber suspension system.
09:27Fresh water tank fill here.
09:29It's underneath the bed.
09:31And it looks like it's a split tank.
09:33So one on each side of the coach.
09:34You can fill both up separately.
09:37Got a little light out here.
09:38Eliminates this area.
09:41A vent for the refrigerator.
09:44It's got some mud flaps here in the back.
09:47And look, the tanks are in a chamber.
09:49So it's not just a plastic tank strapped up underneath the coach.
09:53It's actually in a metal box.
09:55Kind of like what Airstream still does today.
09:58Another stabilizer jack or leveling jack point here.
10:01And then there's the discharge for the sewage or black tank.
10:09These are all aluminum compartments.
10:14150 pounds of stuff you could put in here.
10:16Look at that.
10:17Ooh.
10:19Nicely made.
10:19Not weatherproof.
10:20I don't think it was meant to be.
10:25Take a look at the back corner here.
10:28It's got a cool look.
10:30So it's got these flaps here so you could tow your towed or a vehicle being towed behind you.
10:39And the rocks don't fly up and hit the windshield and smash the front of your car.
10:45But it's got the hitch receiver back here.
10:47And it's got probably, I don't think it's a seven-way, but like a five-pin connector.
10:53Nice and polite bracket with light.
10:56Cool taillight design.
10:58Lift this up.
10:59There's a shore power connection.
11:02It's a 30 amp.
11:04It's a 50 amp.
11:05It's a four-prong.
11:06So it's got two hots, a neutral, and a ground.
11:09But it doesn't have a transfer switch.
11:11So you unplug it from the generator or from the coach when you want to plug it into shore
11:17power at a campground.
11:18That way you don't run the generator and be plugged into shore power at the same time
11:24and overload the system.
11:26It prevents you from doing that.
11:29Behind this cover here is a spare tire.
11:32Hope there's no bees.
11:35It's a fiberglass cover with a full-size spare, 19 and a half.
11:40Goodyear tire looks 100% original.
11:44And it still has the little knobbies on it.
11:46By the way, this only has 66,000 miles on it.
11:51So sat around a lot.
11:54But it looks like it was well cared for.
11:57Rear windows inset into the back.
12:00It's got this cool car vision by Intech.
12:03And then there's another little flappy thing here.
12:07For more storage, climb the ladder.
12:11Always a risky move on older motorhomes.
12:13You don't know what it's screwed into or bolted into on the top.
12:20All right.
12:21Up here.
12:24And this feels like a fiberglass.
12:28This is fiberglass.
12:31Got a luggage rack, bathroom fan, skylight,
12:36a little storage carrier, rear AC, front AC, crank up antenna, air horns, and a spotlight up front.
12:46Ooh, can't see it though.
12:50Getting down the ladder is pretty tricky because this is a ladder that goes out and then back in.
12:56So when you're reaching, look, you've got to reach all the way in
13:01instead of just popping straight down.
13:05Down the side, it's got some cool graphics here.
13:10Remarkable condition.
13:15That is a big one.
13:17150 pounds still.
13:19Ugh.
13:21Get dirty with doing these things.
13:24Wheel chocks, waist hose, blankets for whatever reason.
13:29Maybe in case it broke down, you can lay underneath it.
13:33Take the drive shaft off if you have to get towed.
13:36Look, it even has these cool little caps on the corner of the bumper.
13:41It's got an awning down the whole side.
13:43Yeah, I'll pull it out for you.
13:45Why not?
13:48This is the fuel tank fill.
13:53Same tag axle, but look how nice these rims are.
13:57They're probably Alcoa rims.
13:58I don't see a maker's mark on it.
14:02And this is a luma frame.
14:04So it's all aluminum frame.
14:06I might have said wood in the beginning.
14:08It's RVIA certified.
14:10It's got the mud dauber screen over the furnace.
14:13Handle to get in.
14:15A little porch light missing the cover.
14:17And made by Holley Rambler Corporation.
14:22Got a Dexter lock.
14:25Lock on the handle.
14:26Door swings around.
14:28And look at this.
14:30This pops into that.
14:34Over here.
14:37Wow, look at that.
14:39Brand new.
14:40Brand new propane tank.
14:43Thing is massive.
14:44Probably, if I had to guess, 80 pounds of propane.
14:51Outlet.
14:55So you can plug in cable and plug out TV.
15:00So if you want to put a TV outside, you could.
15:03This over here.
15:04This is another storage compartment.
15:06Gets you up behind here, probably to the reservoir for the hydraulic.
15:11Yeah, for the jacks.
15:13Look at this.
15:14It's dry underneath too.
15:15And it's got headers.
15:18This is going to be a quick one down the highway.

15:36Proud of what they built.
15:38This one's heated too.
15:40All right, for the carefree awning.
15:45There's a little ratchet up top here.
15:48You got to push that in.
15:50Pull a little strappy strap.
15:57I don't even think this is the awning tool.
15:59Might be for something else.
16:05Look at this.
16:10All the way down.
16:11Now, once you get this down, this strap slides.
16:14So you can line it up wherever you want it to line up.
16:16Maybe not in front of the door.
16:18The material is in excellent shape.
16:21Look at this.
16:24Oh, yeah.
16:26And then these probably need some luby-dooby.
16:31Yeah, they do.
16:32These would slide up all the way up this track and hook in up here, behind here.
16:40And then once you get that in, you spin this knob to lock it.
16:45And then you're able to pull this handle out and lift the awning up to your desired height.
16:51And you could unclip this from the body and you could stake this down to the ground and you'd have
16:58it
16:59completely vertical up and down.
17:01It's a pretty common standard way that RV awnings work.
17:07But they're always going to be soaking wet when you pull them out.
17:10So you pull it out and you just don't hang underneath it for a while.
17:13But yeah, this slides up, locks in, spin the little knob, do the other side, then lift this up.
17:21Now, to get it up, there's a ratchet here that if I was to push this up, the one is
17:28going to come flying up.
17:30So what you have to do is you have to have a good grip on this at the same time
17:37and then do your ratchet.
17:41And then when it goes up, oh, it stopped.
17:49Then when it goes up, you can just push it up by hand the rest of the way.
17:55There you go.
17:58And then for driving on the highway, same thing here in the back.
18:08Oh, and that prevents it from coming out.
18:11Zip ties are your friend.
18:12Oh, and when you have it out, you're going to be there for a while.
18:15There's a center support you can hook up to the big tube.
18:21When you walk inside, look at this, power steps.
18:25You missed it, you can see it again.
18:29Runs off the engine battery.
18:32The screen detaches from the main door.
18:36Look at that.
18:39Okay, and look, the wood grain we talked about.

18:49All right, let's hook the door in.

19:02Got a little gutter rail over the door and you can see where the aluminum sheets meet.
19:07It's all riveted.
19:08It's a little dark in here.
19:10Let the camera adjust for a second.

19:22You can monitor your fresh tank and you can turn the water heater on.

32:28So it's on these Dometic fridges that they do that.
32:33And then someone forgets about it and then they rip the whole thing apart.
