Justin Verlander made some odd comments before his upcoming start.

00:09doug car scott anderson 97 one tigers look um verlander's story is really
00:14really strange and it sounds like he's not healthy and they're going to give it a go
00:19anyway on sunday and this might be it for him this might be it for him it's not that he's
00:23not
00:24healthy i think what he said in there was that his mechanics aren't quite there yet
00:29but it's time to go if for him it's like s or get off the pot so i think there
00:35needs to be that
00:35distinction made and hopefully that's all it is is just hey it's for whatever reason his mechanics
00:42aren't there the quote that doesn't i'm trying to figure out nobody sees the point in trying to
00:48delay this any further is that sounds like it's a collective decision i i get it but i'm i'm like
00:56if well if you're not ready why are they starting you
01:02am i wrong no i don't think you're wrong that's this whole thing is kind of weird
01:06yeah it's like he's broken whatever it is well there's physically mentally you know mechanics
01:12technique but we're just going to put them out there anyways because we we can't wait any longer
01:18we don't think it's going to get better right is you know 75 jv better than you know 100 flaherty
01:24or whatever the case is cater was in the bullpen that's the thing is cater montura was pitching
01:29really well as a starter um so i mean they can always go back to it that's and that's the
01:34thing
01:34you have the flexibility now because they're 14 games out under 500 i should say i mean it's going
01:42to take a herculean task for them just to get back to 500 specifically by the trade deadline
01:49i don't i don't i if i were operating the organization i would not be in give up mode yet
01:56on this season okay one two is i'm okay with give up mode because give up mode means an elite
02:02sell-off
02:02and a quick rebuild okay which i which i'm not against either i think that makes a ton of sense
02:08i want this to go one direction or the other and that is they need to get white hot to
02:11justify
02:12trying to buy the trade deadline because they're not good enough to win the world series so they'd
02:16have to add to this team or they just need to sell pieces off it surprises me then just a
02:22little bit
02:22that they are giving it a go with jv when they got cater montero coming out of the bullpen and
02:28i feel like this is one of those deals that they'd be able to explain it and all the subtleties
02:32and
02:33nuance when it comes to putting a roster together and well they need cater for something else you know
02:37they want to have them coming out of the pen this weekend i don't know but bottom line here is
02:42it
02:42just seems like a peculiar case story and and look scott harris the the failed veteran pitcher thing
02:48has gotten a lot of attention as it should uh maeda cobb and now possibly this but and then he's
02:56sprinkling some other acquisitions like a charlie morton yeah there's stuff that didn't work and all gms
03:01this is i'm not holding up to a perfect standard he's gonna they're gonna have some signings that
03:05that backfire but there's a pattern here but at the end of the day the veterans that he's taken
03:10chances on with injury it has not worked out maybe that could stop i don't want you you're gonna have
03:15to sign some veterans you should sign some veterans but maybe whatever metrics you're using to determine
03:21that this injured guys were taking a chance on maybe scrap that and and just sign veterans without
03:29throat health concerns now some of this is emergency break glass verlander would i don't think would be a
03:35tiger if reese olsen didn't get shut down is that a safe assumption i think that's safe yep so anyway
03:43well and jackson job could be coming back to this team in in august yeah um but it's been a
03:50he's been
03:50a great detroit tiger and again if you're a big verlander fan you might want to go on sunday because
03:56who
03:56knows what's going to happen next maybe it'll go great but it feels like it's a bit of a roll
04:01of
04:01the dice um well that's the other thing with the tigers is this the way this weekend sets up
04:05you got a school will start tomorrow followed by troy melton so those are maybe your two best
04:12pitchers and then you got the attraction that is justin verlander for sunday i imagine we're going
04:18to have really good crowds this weekend at comerica park despite the fact that this team is 14 below 500
04:24okay i'm going to say something that might come across as a hot take and i don't i don't think
04:28it's very hot takey well look from you yeah i don't think it's very hot takey and maybe it's just
04:34doug but i kind of got an untouchable who was on that list yesterday with the with the tigers
04:42espn put out the list of the top 100 tradable guys in major league baseball terek scoobel was number one
04:49and there's a tiger on there i'm like you know what i'm not trading him i'm not and more and
04:57more
04:57people are talking about trading him and maybe it's just me and you know untouchable is such a strong
05:04i could be convinced otherwise but i i'm not interested at all if the plan is to trade scoobel
05:12i'm not trading casey mize casey mize is entering the prime of his career if you look at his numbers
05:18he's having the best year of his career his injuries this year are not arm related
05:24and i'm i'm not trying to start a full-scale rebuild i'm if i'm running the tigers i'm trying
05:32to quickly reload and compete again next year using the greatest accelerant at the trade deadline
05:39as perhaps we've seen in years to fuel that rebuild in moving tarik scoobel and if you're
05:47losing one starting pitcher i'm not interested in losing another and i'm probably putting together
05:52a framber like contract where i got framber mize and melton at the top and maybe a free agent
06:00and cater or or jackson job resource in some combination you know it feels to me
06:08like if you're gonna trade scoobel you gotta keep mize now he's a free agent so you have to sign
06:13him but i can't believe how many people want to sell scoobel and mize that feels to me like going
06:21down a rebuild path well i think people get enamored when they think of top prospects you can get from
06:28other organizations and you know if you can end up getting if you trade both of these guys and end
06:33up
06:33with you know four or five at a top 100 players in all of baseball wouldn't you do that and
06:38you're setting yourself back and i don't want to be the team that's always trading away i think at
06:44some point you got to trust what you have and i agree with you with with mize i don't know
06:49if he's
06:49necessarily untouchable but he's pretty close to it for me yeah i it's he's a guy that i don't think
06:54is going to command a ridiculous contract in the offseason because he doesn't have a track record of
07:00of being that guy he can be awesome and if i were casey mize i'd probably push for like a
07:07four-year
07:07deal so that you can capitalize on the next deal um and and bank on yourself that you got it
07:13but i
07:13mean we'll see what what offers are thrown his way but he's a guy that i do envision as part
07:19of this
07:19team's future not just because he was you know the first pick overall on that draft but because he's
07:24he's turning into a really good pitcher before eyes and it's taken it's taken a minute you know it's
07:29taken a minute but this isn't something that happened immediate success overnight his era is
07:33whip is all that stuff is and he's been set back by a different injury this year but i'd be
07:38far more
07:38concerned if it were elbow or a shoulder yeah and he looks on the mound like a much more confident
07:45pitcher like he's more mentally tough yeah but nonetheless he still has had injuries which sucks even
07:52though it's not arm related it's is this going to be is this always something with him and maybe
07:58but at some point you got that i'm sitting here being critical don't re-sign hurt pitchers and i'm
08:04saying casey mize is untouchable so that probably sounds but i don't think casey mize injuries this
08:09year or anything related to what's happened in the past and he probably needs a good offseason to just
08:14resting but 2485-3997-97 phone calls feedback it's karshen anderson by the way trajan langdon's going to speak in
08:22the
08:2211 o'clock hour and there are some interesting breadcrumbs as it pertains to our detroit pistons
08:28we will get to that coming up at 1102 it's karshen anderson here on 97.1
