Archaeologists excavating beneath Bath Assembly Rooms have uncovered evidence of Roman activity in an area that had never previously been properly investigated.

The discoveries include Roman ditches dating to the 2nd and 3rd centuries, pottery, glass, coins, animal remains—and a fragment of a Roman military helmet.

Researchers say the helmet adds evidence that military personnel were involved in construction and road building around Roman Bath.

What makes the discovery so fascinating is the location: an 18th-century Georgian building was standing directly above this much older Roman landscape.

The excavation is revealing that Roman Bath may have extended farther than previously understood.
