141 Roman Gold Coins Were Buried Beside a Watchtower — Nobody Knows Why

In Luxembourg, archaeologists uncovered an extraordinary late-Roman gold hoard: 141 solidi dating from approximately AD 362–402.

The coins were found alongside remains of a Roman military watchtower, or burgus.

One detail makes the discovery even more intriguing: 17 coins came from Nicomedia, an important imperial center in the eastern Roman Empire.

Why were they transported so far?

Why were they buried?

And was someone planning to return?

The evidence cannot yet provide a definitive answer.
