Ancient Rome had professional firefighters — the Vigiles — who patrolled the city and responded to fires.
Now archaeologists investigating a monumental second-century complex on Rome’s Caelian Hill believe it may have been connected to the Fifth Cohort of Vigiles.
The discovery includes decorated rooms, unusual mosaics and nearby water infrastructure that could fit a firefighting complex.
But this identification remains a hypothesis.
