01:45they were back in the day and i could go to the concert i might you know but you know

01:51would you're a big concert guy they're not my yeah they're not my favorite band i like this about

02:34band and then stand up in front of me so i can't see the band it's awesome and i get

02:47uh how about movies by yourself how do you feel about going to a movie by yourself oh i've done
02:50that yeah the last cruise movie movie of course i went for free you would you would know that but
02:56uh yeah i went by myself i was one of maybe five people in the theater how about uh dining

03:01all the time all because i travel that's right i travel sometimes a lot of the times i'll i'll have
03:07dinner with with dan or dan and rob and that type of thing but uh often i will dine by

03:14doesn't bother me i do that here the thing i like about dining by myself is uh i go there

03:19i'm hungry it's not because somebody's telling me we need to eat or i need to eat or dad help

03:24wife what it's nothing the kids need to eat it's not that it's like no i'm hungry there's a restaurant
03:28i'm going to it right now and i'm not always by myself i might be sitting at table eating and

03:33like somebody who listens to wgr sits down while i'm eating and starts talking to me so you know
03:38that that happens oh yeah oh yeah well i'll be the professional and steer us towards the no i got
03:43one more point okay all right since when since when are brad and i professional when we're on the air

03:49mean i mean you weren't even born yet and we were we were doing this kind of thing yeah you

04:15that's why it's never made sense to me like first date let's go to a movie what sit next to

04:19when i don't know you and then go out that didn't it just didn't make sense um but yeah if

04:24to observe the thing that's in front of me what do i need somebody else to stand there for and

04:28with concerts if i'm going to a show and i will use fish as an example because my wife hates

04:34band fish same i could try to convince her to come with me and maybe she would eventually say yes

04:40i would spend the entire time looking over at her recognizing hoping she's happy recognizing she's
04:45not it ruins the show it ruins the night for her ruins the show for me we're gonna babysit her

04:50that makes no sense i want to go see the band i just get a ticket and i go see
04:53the band and i'll find
04:53other people and recently um you know dan dunleavy and i go to some concerts here together we just
05:00saw brian adams and uh pat benatar together that was that was a very good concert he wanted to see
05:05pat benatar he had seen brian adams before and of course he left early because he had seen brian
05:09adams before but you guys don't eat selfies when you go to shows together because no we don't
05:14and i actually we had a great time because you know chris brown and dan know each other
05:20but they didn't know each other real well so last year i thought you know what let's all go to

05:24blue jays yankees game together because chris and i are yankee fans and dan is a blue jays fan we
05:30had
05:30a great time the three of us uh going to a blue jays game pat malakara when i went to
05:34st louis went with
05:35me there um a girl i knew from college met me in detroit for my so my trip to detroit
05:40andy roth who used
05:41to be our boss when i went to atlanta this year so i don't always i texted andy roth uh

05:48a month ago i don't even remember why it was just a quick little thing and he replied 10 seconds
05:54later with a picture of paul holding a beer sitting in his living room like you're in atlanta what is

06:04go to the baseball game alone i do quite a bit but there have been baseball games where i've had

06:50about that paul mccartney concert well we were sitting there and there was a a woman next to me
06:56though she might have said hello when she sat down that was it i didn't know her and then
07:00as you know when mccartney's there there's pyro what are the techniques or whatever they call that
07:05that's exactly what they call it it blows up and we were fairly close we were only like maybe eight

07:11from the front and all of a sudden it goes off and it sounded like the building was actually
07:16blowing up and you were her protector she jumped up put her arms around my neck and was in my
07:21lap
07:22oh and i'm like well hello paul this is years of having dogs training you for just this moment they
07:29hate lightning they hate explosions you will hold them calm them ease their pain ease their worry
07:35make them feel better paul hamilton is here to comfort you america ladies of america did yeah
07:41and she was so embarrassed hey don't worry about it you didn't know this was coming you know and
07:46we didn't say another word to each other the rest of the concert but she did wind up in my
07:50lap for a
07:50little bit the real embarrassment kicks in the next day when she sees it on twitter this woman just
07:54winds up in paul's lap because she's afraid of explosions and then paul's like smiling taking a
08:00picture post it or a year later when he's talking about it on the radio with a couple of a

08:05mid-day drive all right where's the thing where you're going to be the professional and to make

09:07was another guy that was in it and i knew i recognized him and then when the credits rolled
09:11i was like oh i know him he's a he's a little league umpire it was a guy that i

09:15league umpire played a psycho in this thing rob ray was in it it's like with rob rob was in
09:18the movie
09:19it was set in buffalo and they're in a bar and somebody walks by like hey aren't you rob ray
09:24from the
09:24buffalo sabers and then it was about this really happened i watched this last night i gotta find
09:28out the name of it i stumbled across this movie and like i'm just scrolling through all this
09:32different stuff and it said a thing it uh lawyer in buffalo it's called one one of the good ones
09:37or one of the good guys or something like that oh sure yeah and it's okay it's pretty new but
09:41i'm
09:41looking at it and you put buffalo in a movie i'm gonna watch because i want to see the skyline
09:45but
09:45it opens with a shot of city hall and the lake and whatever and eventually they're in some bar and
09:50they're walking by and there's just rob sitting there and it's a whole conversation about when it's
09:54okay to punch another person in the face it was great it was i assume rob's big screen big screen
10:00debut well i asked him if you know he knew of anybody for power wash because my house was pretty
10:05bad it needed to be power wash and he didn't say anything he goes that was like in may and
10:09then in
10:10september i'm pulling out of my garage and all of a sudden somebody's pounding on the top of my car
10:14and i'm like who is this i mean do we have homeless people here or whatever and sure enough here's
10:19rob ray and uh yeah it's uh it was yeah oh and ask him about samuelson please i'm so i
10:29feel like
10:30i've been beamed up to some alternate universe right now but samuelson yeah samuelson yeah what
10:34what what what what am i talking about oh samuelson what's going on with samuelson paul what's happening
10:40i think it'll be okay week to week uh and we don't know it's lower body he left after he
10:45had blocked
10:46a shot whether something had happened before that i don't know uh but uh yeah it's uh
10:56i don't know you know i suppose he could have gotten hurt before he blocked the shot
11:01but but i just don't know that and uh so you know we'll see where that goes in a week

11:08situation zelweger he said uh from a concussion standpoint uh was uh better you know he's in
11:17the protocol if they want it's it's a suggested protocol of like um where it's uh for he's he's
11:26in there for uh seven days whether they'll do seven days or not but lindy ruff did say that he

11:33better and um you know you so we'll we'll see it's not obviously he'll be back before uh samuelson
11:42will and again we can maybe assume that samuelson got hurt blocking the shot but we don't know that
11:47for sure right asking you this is more about your job and how you find out information but like
11:53are we just gonna do we just accept that this is hockey and it's lower body and he'll be back
11:57when
11:58he's back and then maybe we find out afterwards or are you out there like looking for you know
12:02walking boots and casts and like is that what it takes like to see a piece of medical equipment
12:07in use in order to gain a little bit more insight and we don't need it if he's week to
12:12week he's
12:12week to week they don't play again or they don't play for another week anyway so the first one doesn't
12:16even count now it's just to week the first one doesn't matter um but is that like how do you

12:21do you do your job in in in that or do you just accept lower body he'll be back when

12:25yeah i mean there's really not much you can do i mean uh we're not in uh you know we're

12:33might see him in a walking boot possibly you know at saturday's game who knows sometimes you you can
12:39gather that when they're coming through the press box or whatever in a walking boot and then you see
12:44that and then you would still wouldn't know the injury yeah you'd have an idea that maybe it was the
12:50shot that did it that did it right it's probably right and and you know if anybody that's played
12:54hockey knows if you block a shot from a frozen puck there is a chance of a broken bone um

13:05it's just part of life you know when you're blocking shots of frozen pucks sometimes now sometimes

14:33expect tonight paul well a little bit better than the last road game because we're gonna have a kid
14:39line that all are probably going to be buffalo sabers now maybe cool leak will come down to
14:44rochester to start the season if they need a roster spot for two reasons number one you need a roster
14:50spot and he doesn't have to be waived number two it might help him after not playing for a year

14:55get acclimated to hockey even though he's probably going to play in all four preseason games
15:00he's going to play in the third one today but i think it's going to be fun to watch
15:04ostland center kolik and helenus yeah yeah i'd say so that's appointment television right there
15:10and and i actually asked lindy i said they're young kids i mean the young the oldest one is
15:16ostland at 22 he's the veteran of the line um and but i said if it came up during the
15:22regular season
15:23would you be afraid to use those three together he was absolutely not he goes i certainly i absolutely
15:28would he goes if that's what we decided to do he goes um you know they're especially ostland are
15:36mature type of players um they played together you know helenus will be part of our pregame show
15:42tonight and they played together in rochester so it's not the first time they've played together
15:47so uh but lindy ruff did say if they decided at some point during the season to put the three
15:54of
15:54them together he wouldn't hesitate at all yeah there was a there was a kid line last year wasn't
15:58there a bet was it benson helenus and ostland i think right in nashville i remember them playing
16:03together i don't think yeah because um lindy couldn't remember who played with uh the two of
16:09them and i was kind of thinking benson myself i think it was benson if i'm remembering right because
16:14i remember there being a couple shifts where like benson would dig a puck out down low and get it
16:20up to
16:20helenus and he would make some crazy move and then ostland would get it and it was like okay here
16:25we go here are these guys yeah and that we they're kind of there now with ostland centering benson and
16:31quinn you got two thirds there uh you just need helenus to get over on that wing and when lindy
16:38starts shuffling lines when things aren't going well that could be a shuffle that he does flip quinn and
16:42helenus or something like that uh he often will do things like that so i'm looking forward to seeing
16:48that tonight and seeing how that works out and uh yeah it should be good tell tell me if this

16:55dumb concept or idea all three of those guys can play and i think are best as centermen yeah do

17:02think you see all three sort of just you know hey take a period at center and then you slide

17:07left wing and we'll just have everybody play center for a period well helenus was talking about that's
17:12the great thing about it is the three of them all can play center whether it's draws you do a

17:17crossing and i'll use the example of samuelson and dalene both left-handed shots and you'll see
17:24them like on a on a line rush all of a sudden flip in the middle of the play you
17:31know that they'll
17:32cross and and it messes the other the line coming up at them uh because either one can play right

17:38you know as a left-handed shot and i always kind of laugh when i see them do that like
17:43in the middle
17:44of a rush they'll they'll crisscross like the line numeral usually the line with the puck might do
17:49they do it defending so um you know any of the three of them could wind up at center
17:54obviously you know when you're back checking you can you all the first guy back usually will take
17:59the middle anyway but especially when you have three centers they absolutely can do it now because
18:04all three are used to getting back and playing the middle on the back check so first one back has
18:09the
18:09middle you know and and they've all played wing and they've all played center so uh yeah i i like
18:16me you know it might be a line that gets together at some point and then is together for eight
18:20years
18:20with two preseason games left on the docket before the regular season opener next thursday is there
18:26anything in particular that you are looking to learn um from these games in particular not from
18:32conversation not from practice but from what you're seeing in the games is there anything you're
18:37trying to piece together between now and thursday not really because we know the 23 for the most part
18:43they're going if there's no more if there are no more injuries let's talk the correct way um let's
18:49talk rightly yes uh if there are no more injuries they will have to send somebody to rochester whether
18:57it's waving a forward or sending kulik down i mean they could send down awesome or helen's but we know
19:03that's not happening they don't they don't require waivers either um but uh you know that's the only
19:08thing really that we're looking at really the thing i'm looking at is is kulik throughout this you know
19:14how is he progressing what does he look like um all those types of things uh
19:23there's really nothing else you know when you think about it i'm trying to think if there's anything
19:28else that i i see out there that i would really say hey i i need to murt got today

19:35know it's going to be gilbert mccarthy johnson and murtka and metzen and kamaroff i i also like to see
19:41kamaroff too in these types of situations to see if he's ready to be the guy that could be called

19:46in a situation but right now if everybody's healthy metz is number seven i think gilbert's number eight i
19:53think johnson's number nine kamaroff i think would go down as number 10 before you would you would get
19:59to him um so um but still you know murtka is very interesting to me i i think after watching
20:08him in
20:08the prospects uh showcase he was uh pretty good pretty you know i he was trying i think too hard
20:17so i i i think maybe a year and don't touch him in rochester unless he's really really good
20:23might be a good idea i suppose at the end of the year if you want to give him a
20:28game or two just so
20:29he knows what it's like to be in the nhl fine um but uh i i i am not to
20:37me sending somebody to
20:38rochester is not a death sentence it's it's let go down there and grow i mean it's a good thing

20:45know you can learn your craft and go and him spending a year in rochester i don't think is a
20:50bad thing at all without you know having to worry about coming up and going down they got enough
20:54guys right now that can come up and go down yeah i i wouldn't i wouldn't be trying to rush

20:59anywhere out of out of rochester i think that's the it's right where he needs to be his skating's
21:03improved i want to see him sort of get to know being a top four defenseman and in a pro
21:09level um
21:10and then just tonight uh i i'm curious what the goalie situation is going to be i'm assuming ellis
21:15will probably play the majority um but that's the other way around lion may get mine may get the
21:21whole game okay because each goaltender right now what i thought might happen is just do what you did
21:26each goaltender right now has played two periods and not just do it again lion play two ellis finishes
21:32lucan in place two ellis finishes and by the time you're done with preseason each goaltender played
21:37four periods um so but lindy said lion will start it's possible he could play the whole game he
21:43goes let's see how it goes um and then maybe the same thing would go for lucan in on saturday
21:49that
21:49you know maybe he would get the whole game and you know so i i and it still could go
21:55that way it
21:56still could go lion two periods and ellis plays and then same thing on saturday but you might want to
22:01give lucan in the whole game on saturday because my guess is he will start in columbus
22:06and he's not going to get a game between saturday and thursday so i don't think it would hurt if
22:12he
22:12got the full game on saturday can you can you sum up the mood uh that the change in mood
22:19going into
22:20this season compared to any of the previous several where the drought's been broken and now it's just
22:28that that's not hanging there anymore and now there's an assumption that this team is in the league
22:33again um it doesn't mean they win the division it doesn't mean they compete for the cup even but
22:38they're in the league and the season starts in october this year and doesn't end in december
22:43or whatever there's just something different paul what how how would you describe it well it starts
22:49up top as mike likes to say the uh the grown-ups have taken over you know and did did

22:55get some good players here sure he did there's no question about that and he deserves credit for that
23:00um but i don't think they felt that the players well i know the players didn't have any confidence

23:32well they talk a good game and i don't mean that to say that as i'm not saying that as

23:38but they also do understand that this talk is cheap they have to go on the ice and show it

23:45last year was great and last year is over and it means nothing we this is them talking we have

23:53start at day one and day one was training camp and we can't be thinking sitting there thinking

24:06talking about the reason it's going to be harder is nobody's coming in thinking well this is a cake

24:38the first place team so dalene said he goes they're coming for us we're not going to surprise anybody
24:44anymore people know it's not an easy game anymore so they're going to be ready and he goes if we're
