00:01if and when this ends in defeat i mean it's a very sudden abrupt transition if it even counts
00:09as a transition into the into the offseason into the after of the existence here the sabers
00:16existence talking to paul yesterday at the arena like they lose this game i mean tomorrow's the
00:22lockers right i mean these guys want to get out they'll want to they'll want to start their break
00:27it's pretty short especially when you make a run right so that's what we got i mean not everybody
00:32today let's break it down with paul hamilton now on the west her hotline i guess paul will have
00:38lindy ruff yarmo kekalainen tomorrow maybe other players but we had some guys today yeah 420 is
00:44when you guys will have those gentlemen i don't know if they'll be out there together or separately
00:49but they will be on with you well not with you but on your show uh doing their thing um
00:54and i've
00:55talked to jeremy i know the players this will start at 8 15 so like rasmus dalin will be first
01:02um in the morning so i'll be on with jared at seven get down to the arena you know he
01:08might pick a couple
01:09of those guys uh to play we'll see and um so yeah but you know we got to speak with
01:16um uh guys like
01:19uh benson and and uh lion um doan uh you know there's still some other ones to go but yuri
01:27kulik was interesting uh he revealed that a couple of months ago he went to the mayo clinic and actually
01:33had surgery to remove the blood clot so it's gone they they had they removed it he said it went
01:41very
01:41well and uh he said there were times where he wondered if he ever would play hockey again
01:49and now you know he's really you could just tell how happy he is you know he's been on the
01:55ice like
01:55skating and shooting and that type of thing but uh you know he's very happy that you know it seems
02:01like this is taking care of things and he's going to be able to continue his career and he said
02:05you
02:06know he's got to lose some weight i mean he put some weight on because there was a time he
02:09couldn't
02:09do anything you know and uh when you you're an athlete and you're all of a sudden you're
02:14reduced to nothing you put on a little bit of weight but he'll be fine is that how that goes
02:18yeah when you sit around all the time oh it happened to me i'll tell you go on go on
02:25anyway well that that's encouraging news about about him paul because that that's someone that
02:30you know you can get depending on what level you want to get excited um about he was someone they
02:36were counting on i think we were all kind of counting on and curious to see what he would
02:40do to follow up what was kind of a breakthrough half season last year for him so good that he's
02:46on the horizon for the fall they've got plenty of young guys that we've already gotten familiar with
02:51and he's easy to forget um right and he's excited about that i mean he he was drafted with austin
02:57so
02:57he said he really enjoyed following along with him and he's been in town you know and seeing what he
03:03was able to accomplish and see what benson's been able to accomplish and helen use and he's very
03:10excited he goes he he goes look at i've learned some things too by watching and going over some
03:16things and even getting on the ice a little bit to try to make himself a better player
03:20and he was genuinely excited about getting together with those guys on the ice and being part of the
03:27sabers young core because you're right and i'm guilty of it you know when we're talking about the
03:31young core i'm bringing up names i rarely bring his up because i i do forget about him you know
03:36and
03:36i shouldn't because when he's at his best he's a darn good hockey player well now that he has said
03:42and affirmed that he will have the opportunity to continue and resume his hockey career then he becomes
03:49a part of the conversation i didn't want to really bring him up at all because you know we i
03:53felt like
03:54we were in a holding pattern whether he was ever going to be able to play again so um you
03:58know that's
03:58that's cleared up and that's that's great um was he had ever was he ever any chance of playing this
04:03year no he's it didn't seem like it just because well at first i think they were just hoping it
04:11would dissolve and then if he dissolved he could have played but it wasn't happening so that's where
04:16i think they turned to the mayo clinic and and decided on surgery okay i think that was like a
04:22couple
04:22of months ago and i think that's when it was all right no it's not going to happen this year
04:28we're going to have to move on to to get this out and we're start worrying about next year i
04:33want to
04:33reserve the right to circle back to maybe talk about some of what i'm curious i didn't hear and
04:37i haven't seen any quotes from lion but i'm curious about what sort of things came up with him but
04:42i
04:42feel like we got to talk about last night before we get too far into all of this stuff here
04:47and
04:47thompson and talk obviously didn't speak today those guys whether they're nursing injuries or anyone
04:52else is too uh we'll see uh as we get more guys tomorrow um paul how i don't know last
04:59night like
05:00where do you want to start here the the the play that leads to the goal was unfortunate i thought
05:06from
05:06both dalene and thompson um and then but the goal itself going in was you know that's not it wasn't
05:16tipped the screen didn't look egregious like i think lucan and just missed it and i'm sure he feels
05:21awful like we all do but it was just not a play that i was even on the edge of
05:27my seat about because
05:28i just thought it's a nothing play and i know some people disagree with me and that's fine um but
05:37um as i watched the replay first i thought because i saw the puck drop and so i thought evans
05:43hit it
05:44yeah he didn't and then new hook cleared it up he said um he as he went to shoot the
05:51puck the puck
05:52stood up on end and then he shot it which made it a knuckle puck right which is why the
05:57puck dropped
05:58and that's why i don't blame lucan and whatsoever because he's on it i could see you can see on
06:03the
06:03slow motion replay he's on the shot next thing you know the puck drops to the bottom of the
06:07to the bottom and starts going to his left i don't know why and i say to myself i don't
06:14know
06:14what he what he can do there i mean he's expecting it in one place next thing you know the
06:18puck drops
06:19because it's a knuckle puck and it's it's it's down and and so i i really i'm in the camp
06:25of i don't
06:26blame it at all for that goal had it just gone on the same trajectory and just been a shot
06:31that wasn't
06:32a knuckle puck yeah that's a bad goal to give up but you got to stop that and i think
06:37he probably
06:37would have because he seemed like his line was right on it but you know you i when i saw
06:42that
06:43drop my first thought was that hit somebody and then i saw a different angle like no that didn't
06:47hit evans and then when i when we actually heard from new hook and he because he said he wondered
06:54if
06:54evans had hit it and evans told him no but he said when he went to shoot the puck the
06:59puck went up on end
07:00on him paul what a shame i mean they were so good i mean a play like that that's overtime
07:06for you
07:07a play like that yeah that's yeah the one game seven the sabers have won is a play where like
07:11right that's the goal that went in yeah how many times have you seen tage thompson do that little
07:16drag move and bang the things in the net on that particular one though he did the drag move he
07:22lost
07:22it got it back and it just seemed like he was too far in by that time he was like
07:25right on right
07:26on dobich's pad and it's it's easy for me to sit here and second guess but him coming through the
07:32circle like that i would love it if he shot the puck and just shot it from the circle and
07:38let it just
07:38wire it i mean how many times have we seen him score like that you know coming through the circle
07:44and just ripping the puck so um just not in a while yeah yeah so frankly i but still i
07:51would i would
07:52take my chances with tage thompson over there and that's coming through the circle like that
07:56on an outnumbered then trying to drag the puck in front of the defenseman losing it getting it back
08:02and then by the time he got it back as i said he was right on top of dobich and
08:05there wasn't really
08:06a whole lot he could do at that point it didn't look to me paul like he ever considered benson
08:11as an
08:12option you're right like he looked to me like i'm going to the basket with this like
08:18hell or high water that's but do you mind that you know what we talked about it already a little
08:23bit and i think it's one of those like if it doesn't work whatever you do what did was the
08:29wrong thing because if he if he defers there and you know the defender gets a stick on it or
08:35somehow
08:35dobich makes a save on benson or benson misses the net or whatever where a lot of tage thompson is
08:41deferring to 21 year old zach benson in overtime come on be the guy right but now he does that
08:48it
08:49doesn't work and we want him to pass off because you know maybe that would have worked so that's the
08:54best i can offer i don't know it's not like to me benson was an obvious option there's only like
09:01one moment within the whole action of the play where he would have to have decided right then i'm
09:07doing this because with dobson falling i think it's dobson and whoever's closing on him from behind
09:13like you say he loses it for a little bit i think it's right before he loses it he would
09:18have needed
09:18to pass and so you know it's one of these things you watch it in super slow-mo and you
09:23can hyper
09:24analyze it and simply that was a dude trying to go take just go to the rack and i kind
09:31of i respect that
09:32i guess yeah yeah yeah and and uh as i said i i still would take my chances with him
09:38ripping that
09:39puck from the coming in through the circle uh dobish you know was playing well but uh and i mean
09:45here we
09:45are again a game seven i mean they had the game seven against the lightning which we've documented a
09:51million times where they got outshot 29 to 9 and just held tampa bay off and yeah new hook got
09:58the winner
09:58um and uh they win that series in the last 51 minutes and 22 seconds the canadians had 14 shots
10:06on goal including the game winner buffalo at 31 the sabers had 91 shot attempts montreal 59
10:16i mean buffalo just seemed like they had it they were going they they came back they scored their
10:23two goals to tie the game and then looked like they had taken the lead now i can't sit here
10:30and say
10:30that the ref cost them the game because they're still 10 minutes to go in the period montreal still
10:36has a chance to tie the game they could pull the goalie and tie the game things could change there
10:42but where i what i do believe and feel is the referee took this this the opportunity away from the
10:49sabers to defend a one goal lead which they tend to be pretty good at and even score an empty
10:54net goal
10:55which they tend to be pretty good at so they never got that opportunity to be able to do that
11:00um i just i still don't understand why the referee was so quick um you know you know of course
11:08so i
11:09discussed it with with your son the goalie and as he said that you know greenway does not move the
11:16goaltender at all he he goes that is a free puck because it's under dobish but you can see it
11:23and
11:23he pushes his stick and just pushes the puck he doesn't push dobish and pushes the puck through
11:30and now the puck has come through the referee still has not blown the whistle and like malenstein's
11:37there the referee is right either next to him or a little bit behind him so they're looking at the
11:40same thing and i think the referee made it gave dobish the benefit of the doubt that he was going
11:47to cover it in reality as your son said all game long he was all over the place he didn't
11:53know where
11:54the puck was and a lot of times during the game he didn't know where the puck was he was
11:57losing the
11:58puck he had no idea where that puck was and the referee gave him the benefit of the doubt and
12:03blew the
12:04whistle and i just think that was a horrible call a horrible play by the referee um and and as
12:11i said
12:11it took the opportunity from the sabers to to try to protect a one goal lead and go on to
12:16carolina
12:17yeah i heard owen talking about this on post game yesterday while i was driving home and i like the
12:21point he made i thought of a pitcher who's always around the zone and an umpire giving that pitcher the
12:28benefit of the doubt but the way owen described it like dobish did like you just said doesn't know where
12:33the puck is a lot during the night and you shouldn't be quick on the whistle with a guy like
12:38that yeah you get you know give the play a little bit of time if he you know is not
12:43on top of it so
12:45to speak so did you ever hear paul like i couldn't tell if the whistle i couldn't hear a whistle
12:51all
12:51night in the building yeah so i couldn't tell if a whistle blew or if they it was the old
12:56we intended
12:56to blow the whistle move there because it really was not made i was left to guess there was a
13:02whistle
13:03there was a whistle okay i did see a replay that this we heard the sound of the whistle i
13:08saw that
13:09on twitter and i also did see the referee put the whistle to his mouth right um that's the first
13:16thing
13:16i saw and then later on i did actually hear it um malenstein today uh he wasn't made available to
13:24us
13:24last night but uh today he said he was just as surprised as we are he he heard the whistle
13:31he knew
13:31he goes it was there was confusion but he he heard the whistle as he went to put the puck
13:37in so he
13:38kind of knew that the whistle had blown but he's like in the same spot i am like well why
13:43are we
13:44hearing a whistle here there's a puck laying right here yeah with an empty net why are we hearing a
13:51whistle and i i i totally understand what he what his frustration what he what he's what he's thinking
13:56for me it's because it can't be instantaneous the puck has to travel that distance from when you
14:01decide to blow the whistle to when it pops out and also for me the call is reasonable because i
14:06don't
14:06want referees to have to process whether the goalies have been good in a certain game or ever and you
14:12know tracking the puck you know a crime's a crime and if that happens to the sabers i think i
14:17would
14:17defend it you know the puck was out before he blew the whistle that that's my cause like i just
14:22said
14:22in my opinion it's because you can't do it instantaneously you there is a there is a fraction
14:27of time that goes between when you make the decision and when you hear the sound so i think
14:31that's where the puck travels that distance i think when he decides i can't see it he's not supposed to
14:37be thinking about well this goalie actually has been a little bit weird like that's just not how i
14:41want sports officiated tough break that's a decent point was there any debate at all about the first
14:47montreal goal paul oh yeah lindy ruff looked at it i didn't think he he turned his foot turned his
14:54foot and he came off the ice a little bit as he turned it and so that's where i thought
14:59i this one
15:00of these that i i was saying to everyone that i was with like i think i used to know
15:05the rules on this
15:05stuff but i don't know anymore throw a dart i don't know if that's going to be a kicking motion
15:10or
15:10not because there's been other goals this year that i saw that look like kicks that get approved and
15:15ones that don't look like kicks that get taken down so i don't know what the hell another tough
15:19you know what though it was so close and their penalty killing just was not good i don't think
15:26if i'm lindy ruff i want to take that chance that i want to take the chance at the nhl
15:31even if i think
15:32i'm right you're pretty sure i'm right but i mean he couldn't have been totally sure he was right
15:39and do you want to put the montreal canadians on the power play the way their power play has been
15:43scoring i think that might have been part of the decision too so that's why i agree with the
15:49i i i i think it's very very close but i i didn't think it was a kick motion and
15:55i would not have
15:56taken the chance of getting a penalty with what i saw there i agree with that um well it's not
16:03i
16:03mean it's day one of the offseason i'm not trying to rush anything paul but well they're rushing i mean
16:08we've talked to half their team i know that's right let's hear about lion what what do you think
16:12their future in goal looks like i think you know with him having another year on his contract um
16:18and for the most part i mean during the regular season those two were really good
16:23and are the one of the reasons why the team was so good there are a number of reasons but
16:28that was
16:28one of them and it just seemed like when one of them would go down with an injury or one
16:35of them
16:35wouldn't play well another one of them would pick it up and i'll include ellis in that yeah he did
16:42that a couple of times too where and it just and lion says it's really funny how one guy would
16:49get
16:49injured and he would come back but they'd wait the injuries would wait until he came back and then
16:57the next guy might go down with an injury he goes we never really got caught like they never had
17:01to
17:01bring levi up here because two guys were hurt or anything like that they never got caught on it
17:07it just seemed like they were always lindy was always happy they had three goaltenders because
17:11well look it we got one hurt and then he'd come back and they had three goaltenders a little bit
17:17then
17:17the next one would get hurt and it just was kind of weird that way how it went down but
17:23i think more
17:23two what is what does kekelein think about levi and what does he think about ellis i mean this is
17:31does he think enough about ellis that he wants to make him one of the two because i i don't
17:36think
17:37they're going to carry three again i mean are they uh and so you got to make a decision either
17:43he's on
17:44your team and he's one of your goalies or you're going to put him on waivers and he's going back
17:47to
17:47the st louis blues most likely um and then you got to make a decision on on levi what are
17:53you doing
17:54with him and what does he want you to do with him is he upset i would be if i
17:59were him you've alluded
18:00to that many times and i know jeff merrick is out there uh saying like their their relationship is
18:06you know it's burned but he's under contract you know so they you know that he he can request
18:12or demand or whatever and they can just go uh whatever dude so i i don't know if they're
18:18necessarily out of runway there that doesn't change the fact that he may want to go somewhere else
18:23but we'll see yeah and lucan and paul like i i i just i'm gonna i think we're all you
18:31you're you're
18:31defending the the play there and i appreciate that because it it did look like it was tipped because it
18:37was that knuckle puck so not a straightforward easy save um but but he did lose the job twice
18:45during the playoffs and like i don't know like do you think they might be inclined to try to do
18:50something really big and bold that goal maybe i'm working too hard to not ignore the regular season
18:58yeah i want to make that part of the whole decision including the playoffs where from december 9th
19:05until almost the end of the season he led the league in in save percentage i respect that and
19:11and um i i don't want to not put that in the equation everything should be considered you know
19:18when they're looking at it i don't see a big move i know they're you know lyon and and lucanen
19:26had
19:26very good runs at times i mean look at what lyon did he he was one win away from setting
19:31or tying the
19:33nhl record for consecutive wins on the road with 11 he got 10 um you know so he had streaks
19:40of his
19:40own that he played very very well but it just seemed like in the playoffs one would falter so
19:47the other had to come in and play pretty well i mean lyon had a good run against the bruins
19:50yeah
19:51but then he didn't play well and then lucanen played very well in games four and six in montreal
19:58didn't do so well in in the game in buffalo but i i i i sound like i'm making excuses
20:03for this guy
20:04but buffalo wasn't anywhere near as good in front of them in buffalo as they were in boss or in
20:08montreal yeah i agree with that um you know so uh i i guess i'm i'm getting to i don't
20:16really have
20:16an answer for you what i would do i understand it and it is like mike already said it's only
20:20the
20:20first day of the off season what yeah what if anything i'm gonna eat one by friday paul
20:25what if anything did lyon say about the roller coaster you know the opportunities that sort of
20:31passed him by here right getting the chance to go back in the net and re-establish that like yes
20:38alex lyon can be our 1a or 1b just in the playoffs like i it felt like a storybook maybe
20:45being written
20:46by a guy who's basically been a journeyman and the ending just kind of derailed on him yeah he said
20:51there was a lot good in the year and there was a lot bad and what he meant by that
20:56is he said he has
20:58a mentality that he should stop every puck and he goes i know that's not realistic but that's the
21:05mentality and that's and he gets angry and that's when he thinks it's bad when when when it doesn't go
21:11his way that way and he's not stopping the puck the way he feels he should um he says and
21:17lucan
21:17is the same way he goes i i know he's beating himself up uh from from last night because even
21:24though
21:24the puck's fluttering and and on the downward swing he thinks he should stop everything he goes we have
21:29the same mentality with that and he said uh so he liked being in buffalo he said it was a
21:37really
21:38good opportunity that he got to start the year in net he said it gave the team a chance to
21:43see what
21:43he's about and it gave him a chance to see what the team is about so he said that really
21:48kind of
21:48helped spring him forward uh to to having what was pretty it was a good season for a lot of
21:56it but
21:56a lot of people are going to remember the end and that's sports that's the way it is you know
22:02they're going to remember what happened to the end more they're going to happen in during the season
22:06um we'll see what lindy ruff and yarmo kekalainen remember paul thank you another busy day
22:13tomorrow sounds good take care guys all right paul hamilton
