00:00This happened back when I was a college student.
00:02During that time, I shared a house with a roommate named Stephanie, and we each had our own bedroom.
00:07When I was in college, I used the Snapchat app on a daily basis.
00:10Quite a few of my friends are on Snapchat, not just from college, but from high school and other places
00:14as well.
00:15I snap with quite a few of them regularly.
00:18One night, I got added by someone new on Snapchat.
00:21When I looked at the username, I didn't know who it was.
00:24It was a guy, and I thought that possibly he had went to my school or something.
00:28Maybe I had met him at one point.
00:30At that time, I had been in college for a couple of years, and had met lots of people in
00:33my time there.
00:34I added the user back, seeing that his bitmoji was a pretty typical-looking guy.
00:39Not long after this, I received a snap from him.
00:42I opened it, curious as to who he was and what he was sending me.
00:45It was just a blank picture of nothing, really.
00:48It seemed to be all black.
00:49I wondered why he sent me this, but I just opened it and did not respond.
00:53A couple of hours went by.
00:55Now it was a little bit later at night.
00:57My roommate Stephanie was gone, and I was at home by myself and in my bedroom.
01:01I was doing some homework, but was planning to go to bed soon.
01:04I received another Snapchat from the same guy, though.
01:07Like before, it was a picture.
01:09This time, though, I opened it, and the picture looked like it was of my house,
01:12and the picture was taken from my street.
01:15When I saw this, I wondered how this person could be there.
01:17Did they know this was my house?
01:20I sent a chat to the guy, and asked him what he was doing.
01:23He opened it, but did not immediately reply.
01:25I went to my bedroom window, which was covered, and lifted the blinds slightly to look outside.
01:30When I did, I did not see anything.
01:32I couldn't see the whole street from my window, but did see part of it.
01:35I was hoping that maybe he was just walking by.
01:38And maybe this was one of my friends who actually knew me and was playing a joke.
01:41It seemed pretty unlikely for that to be the case, though.
01:44Hopefully the guy was gone now.
01:46About five minutes or so went by.
01:48I had gone back to my homework and was just about done.
01:51I saw that I got another snap from the same guy, though.
01:54This time, it was not a picture, but a chat.
01:56It said,
01:57Open your front door.
01:58I got up and left my bedroom.
02:00Carefully, I walked over to the living room and looked out of the window that had a view of the
02:04front step.
02:04I saw a man standing there, right outside of the front door.
02:07From where I was, I couldn't see the guy's face, but about up to his shoulders,
02:11so I really didn't know who he was, but he didn't appear to be anybody that I recognized.
02:15I had no plans to open the door for him.
02:17I responded, asking who he was.
02:19He did not reply.
02:21I threatened to call the police.
02:22I said, if you don't leave or tell me who you are, I will call the cops.
02:26He opened that, but did not respond to it.
02:28I watched him continue to stand at the front step.
02:31Then, after about a minute, I saw him leave the step and go to the left.
02:34It was out of my sight, and I hoped and assumed that he was leaving.
02:38I went to another window and looked out of it in the direction that he went.
02:41I didn't see anything, though.
02:42This probably meant that he was gone now.
02:45For the next several minutes, I went around the house and looked out just about every side of it, but
02:49did not see the guy.
02:50This made me feel better, and I figured that he was gone.
02:53Then, I went back into my bedroom.
02:55I should have gone to sleep right then, but I wasn't that tired anymore.
02:58It wasn't all that late, either.
02:59I was done studying, though, and went into my room and turned on my TV.
03:03About an hour later, I felt my phone vibrate next to me on the bed.
03:06I picked it up and saw yet another snap from the same guy.
03:10At first, I didn't want to open it, but ultimately, I decided to.
03:14It was a picture, and after opening it, I saw that it was a close-up of my bedroom window.
03:19I looked over to the window, but couldn't see out of it at all because of the thick blinds that
03:22I had.
03:23Then, I heard a knocking on the window.
03:25I took out my phone and dialed 911.
03:27I couldn't take it anymore.
03:29Then, I ran out of my bedroom and into the bathroom down the hallway.
03:32I locked the door and waited for the police to arrive.
03:35In the meantime, I blocked his account on Snapchat and did not want any more snaps from him.
03:39When I was inside the bathroom, I didn't hear anything after blocking the guy.
03:43He wouldn't be able to contact me, and I didn't hear any noises from the window or anything.
03:46I really had no idea what was going on.
03:49I just hoped that he wouldn't try to break into the house or anything.
03:52Eventually, the cops got there.
03:54It was only then that I finally left the bathroom.
03:56They told me that they found a man hiding in my backyard.
03:59He was a man that I did not recognize at all, and I'm not sure how he knew me or
04:03got my Snapchat.
04:04I did have my location on through SnapMaps, though, which is how he knew where I lived.
04:09Since this incident, I only accept friends on Snapchat if I actually know them and who they are.
04:21This was a while ago, before I moved into my own apartment.
04:25I lived with my parents, who make pretty decent money, and seem to always want to move into bigger and
04:31better houses every time they got a pay raise.
04:34This last house they got was in a very wealthy, upper-class neighborhood, on a standard street with dozens of
04:40other huge houses.
04:42My two older brothers were already moved out and in college, so it was just me and my parents living
04:47there.
04:48This happened during summer after my senior year of high school.
04:52I really just played video games up in my room all day, and never left the house unless I had
04:56to, because I didn't have a car.
04:59I think this was on a Friday.
05:01After waking up, I didn't even go downstairs for several hours, staying in my bedroom on the computer.
05:07But when I eventually did, I immediately noticed an echoing sound from the side of the house.
05:12I cautiously went over and looked down that hallway and saw that the side door was open.
05:18It was really windy outside, with the storm supposed to be coming through soon,
05:23so the wind was slamming through the open doorway and causing that echoey sound to resonate through the hallway.
05:29I went over and looked out, then closed it.
05:33Sometimes, my dad would leave through that door in the morning, to put the trash bins out, or for whatever
05:38reason.
05:39Maybe he just didn't shut it all the way and the wind blew it wide open.
05:43I really did not think about it as much as I probably should have.
05:47I threw together a sandwich in the kitchen and essentially went right back upstairs to my room.
05:52Thirty minutes later, the storm came through.
05:54With the wind and heavy rain, it was actually hard to hear my game even with headphones on.
06:00But I pretty much stayed in my room for several hours, until I saw my dad's car pulling into the
06:06driveway.
06:07He came in, and I went downstairs for a second just to say what's up.
06:11But he immediately asked me why the side door was open.
06:14I stumbled over my words for a moment, wondering how he knew it was opened earlier.
06:19Though, before I got any words out, I realized I could hear that echoey wind sound again.
06:25I looked over, and the door was wide open, just like I'd found it hours ago.
06:31My dad walked over and shut it, and I told him that I'd found it like that earlier, and that
06:36I thought he had left it open.
06:38We were both very confused, and we even tried testing out the lock and making sure that the door sealed
06:44and everything.
06:45It seemed to work just fine.
06:48Neither of us had a clue what was going on.
06:50And with the storm, it wasn't exactly convenient to go in and out testing it longer than we did.
06:55So we just pushed it aside and figured if it happened again, we'd look into it more.
07:00Also, my dad was in a bit of a rush.
07:03I guess he was just stopping by to grab a few things, and then heading back out to pick up
07:07my mom and go into the city for an after-hours business party at his work.
07:12Five minutes later, he was gone.
07:13They had these parties or get-togethers like every other month, so I was used to it by then.
07:20Usually it meant they wouldn't get home until around two or three in the morning.
07:24I went back up to my room.
07:26I spent an hour watching YouTube, then got bored and laid in bed to scroll on my phone.
07:31The storm outside was still pretty crazy, and it was well past sunset by now.
07:37While I was laying there on the bed, I suddenly heard a door close.
07:43Instantly, my mind went to that side door, thinking it must have swung open again somehow, and then the wind
07:49shut it.
07:50I got up and went downstairs, hurrying straight up to that side door.
07:55But when I saw it, I got a really bad feeling in my gut, because it was wide open.
08:02Whatever door I'd clearly heard shutting wasn't this door.
08:07It had to be one inside the house.
08:10Now, I was really starting to get nervous.
08:13I went over and shut the side door, then turned around and walked back to the middle of the house.
08:19I started looking for any doors that I thought could have been the one I'd heard, but obviously there was
08:24no real way to know.
08:26There were also just so many doors in the main downstairs hallway.
08:30I think like five or six different rooms.
08:32I opened every single one and did a glance into each of the rooms to make sure everything was good.
08:38I really didn't find anything.
08:41At this point, I was getting kind of scared or worried that something really was wrong.
08:46And had I found even just a small clue of anything else, I probably would have called the police.
08:52But everything downstairs was how it had been left, and I had no way to explain the sound I heard.
08:59I was probably down there for 15 minutes, looking around before calling it quits and going back up to my
09:05room.
09:06I sat down and put my headphones back on, taking a breather for a second and thinking about texting my
09:12dad about the door being open again.
09:14Ultimately, I decided to just wait for him to get home and try to relax.
09:19I opened up my game again and started playing.
09:22Now, to describe the layout of my room, my desk was up against the wall.
09:26And across the room to my right was the doorway into my room.
09:30I had left it open since I was home by myself.
09:34And with the storm in my headphones, although I couldn't hear anything,
09:39after around 30 minutes of gaming, I suddenly saw something move across the doorway from in the hall,
09:45like someone quickly walking past my room.
09:48I only saw it in the corner of my eye, but I instantly threw my headset off and stared at
09:54the open doorway.
09:55My heart was pounding.
09:57I stood up and ran to look down the hall.
10:00Just as I got my head around the corner and looked down, the door at the end slammed shut.
10:06It was the door to the spare bedroom.
10:10Then it was quiet.
10:12After hesitating, I grabbed my phone and hurried out of the house,
10:16calling the police and standing on my neighbor's porch to shelter from the storm.
10:21I have to say, I was really surprised how quickly the police came.
10:25It was only like one to two minutes for the first car to show up.
10:29I ran over and quickly told him what was going on, and he went in.
10:34He was inside for five minutes, and I really couldn't hear much.
10:38It wasn't until another officer arrived and went in that they both showed up a minute later dragging some creepy
10:45-looking guy out of the house.
10:46He was tall and thin, looking almost homeless and dripping wet, but something in his eyes was deeply unsettling.
10:56The guy didn't talk much, and everything he did say made zero sense.
11:01But over the next day or two, it was pretty clear he had found some way to consistently open that
11:06side door and get in.
11:08But how many times he broke in, or if he was maybe living in that spare room, there isn't a
11:13clear answer.
11:15No one ever went in those rooms in the back of the upstairs hallway,
11:18because they were my brother's old rooms that hadn't been used in years.
11:23Pretty disturbing to know he could have been going in and out of our house, creeping around for who knows
11:29how long.
11:29Especially during the summer while I was home alone pretty much all day,
11:33with my headphones on, unable to really hear anything.
11:37It didn't seem like he intended to hurt anyone,
11:40but there's no way to know for sure what he would have done if something else had happened.
11:52What he's doing was heimo.
11:53Q4 I'm talking about?
11:53Touch me, I'm talking about something else.
11:54Tell me anything about something else.
