00:00People would ask like, well, who is the reason? At one point, I said, I don't know, it wasn't about
00:04anybody. And they said back to me, well, then it's about you. You're the only common denominator in
00:10all this thing. For me, it was like an epiphany. I'm like, oh my God, you're right. It is about
00:14me.
00:21In my noodling around and trying different things, I kind of came up with
00:24the initial guitar part that you would hear in the song. I burnt a CD back then
00:29with a bunch of different song ideas on it. And all those songs ended up on the Reason album.
00:34And it was just one of them. It didn't really strike me as anything special, as in like different,
00:39like it was good, but as good as the rest. People get so excited when they hear the
00:44intro of the song. I think of the performing it live. And for me, it's always the opening line.
00:51I'm not a perfect person. There are many things I wish I didn't do,
00:57but I continue learning. I never meant to do those things to you. And so I have to say before
01:03I go
01:05that I just want you to know. On the album, it says, there's many things I wish I didn't do.
01:10I don't know how I let that slip. I know there are many things. So it's there are many things.
01:15So even
01:15when I sing it live, I try to do the grammatically correct version of it, but that's something that's
01:20bothered me forever. I'm sorry that I hurt you. It's something I must live with every day and all
01:29the pain I put you through. I wish that I could take it all away and be the one who
01:34catches all
01:35your tears. That's why I need you to hear. I find it fascinating how much the lyrics have been
01:42deconstructed and analyzed and stuff like that. Like it has accountability and there's an apology
01:47and stuff like that. And in no way was I thinking that at the time, like I need to write
01:52a second
01:53verse that's going to hold me account. Like I like that people can dig deeper and see stuff that I
01:58might've been feeling, but not consciously like expressing. Dan, what's the course? You know the
02:04course, right? Found a reason for me to change who I used to be. A reason to start over new.
02:16I'm not a poet. I did okay in English in high school, but there was a poem that I had
02:23written
02:23where it was kind of that she, you know, she does this or, or, you know, he does this and
02:31it ended in
02:31you are that. I always liked the format and I feel like I might've even tried similar things on songs
02:37prior. And then it kind of just worked, you know, it fit perfectly for this. I don't know what drew
02:43me to that structure in high school, you know, but what if it didn't, I think about that kind of
02:49stuff, you know, all that kind of like sliding doors thing, like one little thing changes the,
02:53the, the course of not only our lives, but anybody who's felt the song and, and had it affect them.
03:03And the reason is you. And the reason is you. And the reason is you. And the reason is you.
03:11And the reason is you. I like a good bridge. I never really thought about it before, but, uh,
03:16I like a bridge that takes you somewhere else. I like that. Now this isn't one of them,
03:21like this is a pretty straightforward bridge, but I've, I'm a fan of bridges that totally are a scene
03:27change, key change, vibe change, the whole thing. And if you can just kind of go out on that on
03:33like
03:33a different tangent and somehow weave in like elements of the first half of the song. Awesome.
03:40But if you can also somehow turn that ship around and, and, and, and like stick the landing and get
03:46back to like your main point of the song, like that's cool. That's like really satisfying for me.
03:51I found a reason to show a side of me. You didn't know a reason for all that I do.
03:58And the reason is
03:59you. I would say my favorite part of the song is the, the very end of the song, uh, right
04:06when we
04:07finished. No, it's, um, it's the last lines of the song. You hear the chorus three times, but the last
04:14part of it is a new set of lyrics. I like that you're still getting the same melody, but now
04:19you're
04:19getting new, new words. Like he's, you're kind of completing it, you know, it is kind of like a
04:24nice little bow on the song. You know, I think what that song means to me now, just how lucky
04:31we
04:31are to do it. Like if we didn't have that song, that song allows us to continue to still have
04:35a
04:35career in music and get to do what we love to do without the, the, this song there could have
04:43been
04:43moments where we're like, you know what, maybe we should just, maybe we should take a break, you know,
04:47maybe we should stop doing this, but it was kind of this like responsibility. It's like having a
04:52child, right? Like maybe we should break up and we can't, we got to save it for the kids. Like,
04:57you know what I mean? Like, and that's not the greatest idea all this time, but, but as an
05:01analogy, it was this thing that was like, we still have to take care of this thing. You know, let's
05:05put
05:05our issues aside or let's work even better. So let's work through these. Let's like grow as human
05:10beings and as a band, which we have having to do a bunch of interviews asking like, are you excited
05:19about its resurgence? We're cynical, you know? And I feel like our initial reaction was like texting
05:26each other. Like what the fuck is this?
