00:00U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a new security deal with Denmark and its autonomous
00:05territory of Greenland on Tuesday on the sidelines of the 81st U.N. General Assembly.
00:10In his address to the UNGA, Trump said Washington will begin constructing military bases on the
00:16island nation very soon, ushering in what he calls a new era of Arctic security.
00:21We will immediately begin the process of developing a large military presence in the appropriate
00:29locations. We will be building two very major military bases.
00:35Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen noted that the deal will significantly boost Western
00:40security in the Arctic.
00:42Mr. President, you have been very clear. You don't want adversaries to come too close.
00:51I fully agree. And with this deal, they are not. We are making sure that they will not
00:59be allowed to get any control or significant influence in Greenland. And we are making sure
01:06that more allies are present in the Arctic at the same time.
01:11Greenland's premier also touted the landmark deal as mutually beneficial to all.
01:15We are truly pleased with the result that strengthened our shared security and strengthened our bond
01:21as close allies. This agreement is historical, and it is about taking shared responsibility
01:28for a secure America, a secure Greenland, with mutual respect and a peaceful Arctic.
01:36This is a win-win-win agreement.
01:40U.S., Danish and Greenlandic officials have been negotiating the security framework for months
01:45behind-the-scenes. Trump first laid his eyes on the territory shortly after his return to
01:50the White House, and even suggested Washington could resort to military force to take it over
01:55in the case of a deal not being reached.
