Donald Trump has announced a proposed framework deal on Greenland that could grant the United States sovereign control over land surrounding key military bases, reportedly under a NATO-backed arrangement that would allow U.S. operations without Denmark’s approval. While Trump has hailed the plan as a major national and international security win for Washington, the proposal has sparked strong resistance in Greenland. Aaja Chemnitz Larsen, a Greenlandic member of the Danish parliament, has rejected the idea outright, saying NATO has no right to influence Greenland’s sovereignty or mineral resources. As reports suggest U.S. access to strategic Arctic territory and rare earth minerals, the deal has triggered deep scepticism among locals and raised fresh questions about NATO’s role, Denmark’s authority, and America’s expanding Arctic ambitions.

00:00I think it's a really good deal for everybody.
00:02It's a great security, great national and international security.
00:06It's a deal that people jumped at.
00:10Really fantastic for the USA.
00:12Gets everything we wanted.
00:15Donald Trump's bold claim over Greenland stunned the world on Wednesday
00:19after weeks of escalating threats that had raised alarms in Copenhagen and across Europe.
00:25Financial markets bounced back and European leaders breathed a sigh of relief
00:30as the president unveiled what he called
00:32the framework of a future deal regarding the Arctic Territory.
00:39Speaking at the World Economic Forum,
00:42Trump insisted he wanted Greenland including right, title and ownership,
00:46but stepped back from earlier threats of military intervention.
00:50Later, via social media, he announced the compromise deal
00:54and withdrew threatened tariffs against eight European countries.
00:59According to the Telegraph,
01:01the framework could give the US sovereignty over small pockets of Greenland,
01:06primarily around military bases,
01:08similar to the UK's arrangement in Cyprus.
01:11The plan might also allow Washington to mine rare earth minerals
01:15without Danish permission, stirring anger among Greenlandic politicians.
01:19Aja Kemnitz Larsson, a Greenlandic member of the Danish parliament,
01:25called the idea that NATO could influence Greenland's sovereignty or minerals
01:30completely out of the question.
01:33The proposal has been met with scepticism from locals,
01:36who see the plan as an overreach into their territory.
01:39A European official told the Post that Rutter suggested transferring sovereignty
01:47of Pitific space base in northern Greenland to the US.
01:52Though under American control since a 1951 defence agreement,
01:56the land legally belongs to Denmark.
01:58The deal would fall short of Trump's original goal of complete and total control,
02:04but still marks a major expansion of US influence in the Arctic.
02:08If finalised, this would be the first time the US has expanded its territory
02:14since World War II,
02:16when the northern Mariana Islands were taken from Japan.
02:19Observers say the deal echoes a 1960 UK Cyprus pact
02:24granting Britain control over two military bases.
02:30Meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutter in Davos,
02:34Trump admitted doubts about the alliance's reliability
02:36if the US were attacked.
02:38Rutter, however, offered unequivocal reassurance.
02:43There's one thing I heard you say yesterday and today,
02:46you were not absolutely sure that Europeans would come to the rescue of the US
02:50if you were attacked.
02:51Let me tell you, they will.
02:54And they did in Afghanistan, as you know,
02:55for every American who paid,
02:59the ultimate price,
03:01there was one soldier from another NATO country
03:04who did not come back to his family.
03:06From the Netherlands, from Denmark,
03:08particularly for other countries.
03:10So you can be assured, absolutely,
03:12if ever the US would be under attack,
03:14your allies will be with you.
03:16For Greenland, the world's largest island,
03:21the plan exposes the high-stakes struggle over Arctic sovereignty,
03:25military power, and rare minerals.
03:28Even short of full US control,
03:30the framework signals that territorial ambitions
03:33and strategic rivalries in the Arctic remain dangerously alive,
03:37with Greenland caught in the crossfire.
