Three children stabbed, one dead, in Blue Mountains domestic violence incident

A Sydney mother is expected to be charged with the stabbing murder of her five year old son and the attempted murders of her two younger children. The young boys killing is the fourth alleged domestic violence murder that took place over the weekend. Its prompted calls for politicians and police to do everything they can to bring an end to the violence.

00:04I can't remember a weekend like this in my career.

00:07New South Wales' 48 hours of horror

00:09ends with a defenceless child

00:11becoming the latest victim of domestic violence.

00:15Whenever there's children involved,

00:17it doesn't get worse than that.

00:19After midday yesterday,

00:21cyclists stumbled upon a car by a road in the Blue Mountains.

00:25Inside they found three children suffering stab wounds,

00:29emergency services arrived within minutes,

00:31but a five-year-old boy couldn't be saved.

00:34His two younger siblings were rushed to hospital

00:37fighting for their lives

00:39after bystanders performed first aid.

00:42Those kids probably wouldn't have survived

00:44if they hadn't stopped.

00:45Honestly, they did a great job.

00:49Their mother was found nearby in the bushes

00:51with self-inflicted wounds.

00:53The woman is aged in her 40s

00:56and is also in a critical condition.

00:57She is the only suspect in this homicide investigation.

01:02We will allege it's been responsible for the death

01:05of a five-year-old child

01:06and likely the attempted murder of two other children.

01:10The father was at work at the time

01:12and has been at his children's bedside ever since.

01:15Police say the family weren't on their radar in any way.

01:19It's profoundly distressing

01:21and I understand why the people of Sydney and New South Wales

01:23are horrified.

01:24A lack of domestic violence history with police

01:27was also the case in the three other alleged DV murders

01:31this weekend.

01:32Those victims were all women,

01:34allegedly killed by men within a ten-hour period.

01:38There is a sense of betrayal here.

01:41We can't become numb to the pain or the violence that we see.

01:46Police say they're responding to one domestic violence incident

01:50every three minutes.

01:51The Premier is looking to launch a campaign

01:54to encourage people to report concerning behaviour

01:57before it's too late.

01:58Authorities desperate to prevent any more harm.
