03:31India's IITs have been split wide open like never before.
03:35The prestigious institutes are now rocking over the suicide of a Mumbai student.
03:41Remember the suicide of a young Mumbai student has now led to the removal of a professor from the dean
03:51post amidst allegations of caste discrimination by the dead student's parents.
03:56Now the IIT Madras faculty has come out in support of the professor who they say is being unfairly targeted.
04:04Faculty members across the IITs in Madras have now claimed that the IIT system is entrusted with upholding the integrity
04:15of examination.
04:16The students in this case was allegedly caught with an AI tool and therefore it is unfair to resort to
04:25this kind of a vilification of a professor without a proper inquiry.
04:29Remember, this is all coming against the backdrop of a series of student suicides on campus, some by hanging in
04:37the IIT Mumbai administration, which is now removing ceiling fans from hostel rooms and replacing them with wall-mounted fans.
04:47But all of this also is coming against the backdrop of the family of the young student Sahil Wakode, alleging
04:54caste discrimination, filing a case under the SCST Act against the professor.
05:00So clearly what was seen as a case of death by suicide has now acquired a caste angle.
05:07Let's take a look at the big story that is now racking IIT campuses across the country.
05:14Take a look.
05:19A 20-year-old IIT Bombay student was found dead and now questions are mounting.
05:26Sahil Wakode's death has triggered protests, police action and a fresh controversy at one of India's premier institutions.
05:34In a major development, IIT Bombay has taken a U-turn and apologised for its earlier statement on Sahil's death.
05:42IIT Bombay admits Sahil's death is still under probe and events before his death should not have been stated as
05:49facts.
05:51Earlier, IIT Bombay had maintained that no discipline reaction was initiated against Sahil after he was caught using phone and
05:58AI during examination.
06:00The institute had said that he was counselled and assured that the incident would not affect his academic career.
06:07But the controversy is far from over.
06:10Students intensified their protests outside the campus on Monday, demanding answers and accountability.
06:16Several protesters were detained by the police.
06:20The immediate demand is resignation.
06:22The director, Dean Hammond, we need accountability.
06:28The responsibility is that you have done it.
06:30What has done it that three Dalit students have taken suicide in the last year?
06:35What is the arrangement of academia here?
06:38People are in such pressure, in such pressure, people are in such tragic and irreversible choices.
06:47Amid the outreach, IIT Bombay removed Professor Suryanarayan Dulla as Dean.
06:52He was reportedly the professor who informed institute authorities after the alleged examination malpractice.
07:00Mumbai police have now booked the professor in an abetment to suicide case.
07:04The BNS and SCST Act have also been invoked following a complaint by Sahil's parents.
07:11Sahil's family has alleged that he was tortured and killed.
07:34But some students contradict.
08:00Sahil, a second-year BTEC student, was found dead in his hostel room on September 18,
08:05hours after he was allegedly caught using a mobile phone during an examination.
08:10A young life lost, a family demanding justice, and an institution facing difficult questions.
08:16The probe continues.

08:26So let's raise the big questions at the moment.

08:39How to ensure justice in cases like this, both for the faculty and for the students?
08:46Those are some of the big questions we are raising today.

08:53Okay, joining us now then is a very special panel.
08:56I'm joined by Professor Raghu Murthugudeh, alumnus of IIT Bombay, visiting Professor IIT Kanpur.
09:03Also joining me Sudindra Kulkarni, another noted alumni of IIT Bombay, Dr. Suraj Yangdeh,
09:10author of Caste, A Global Story, University of Pennsylvania.

09:19And Tejas, one of the protesting law students also, he's joining me from Mumbai.
09:24Good to have all of you on the show.
09:27Sudindra Kulkarni, I want to come to you first because you've just put out an appeal to IIT and all
09:32IITans
09:33to come together to ensure that the professor is not suspended.
09:37You're claiming he is innocent till proven guilty and saying that this is a misuse of the Atrocities Act of
09:45SCSTs.
09:46Do you want to amplify what you're trying to say, Mr. Kulkarni?
09:49Are you saying that the student should not be protesting and the dean should not be suspended over this alleged
09:55death by suicide?
09:59Rajdeep, I participate in this debate as a stakeholder because I am an alumnus of IIT Bombay.
10:12I begin by expressing my deepest condolences to the family of Sahil Wakode, the undergraduate student who tragically committed suicide.
10:28If anyone has the right to know why he committed suicide, it is his parents, it is his family.
10:40And therefore, there must be an impartial investigation to know the circumstances that led to his suicide.
10:53Every student who commits suicide anywhere in India is a matter of profound pain and concern for everyone.
11:07But for me, it's a source of greater pain because it has happened in my alma mater.
11:28At the same time, I am anguished by the fact that Professor Surya Narayan Dula, an eminent academic,
11:41has been unfairly targeted even before the investigation has begun.
11:51The Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribe Act, so-called Atrocity Act, has already been invoked against him
12:00and which we all know has very stringent provisions.
12:06Anyone who faces this charge is not only humiliated but has to prove his innocence.
12:18You know, the normal principle of justice is that you are innocent until proven guilty.
12:24But here, you are proven guilty and now you prove your innocence.
12:30And in all such cases, especially under this act, process itself is punishment.
12:39We all know that the conviction rate in cases of SCSC Act is less than one-third, less than 133
12:48percent.
12:49And it takes a long time.
12:51Now, when an eminent academic faces this charge, and if the provisions are actually enforced,
13:04tell me what will the entire faculty of IIT Bombay, not only IIT Bombay, all IITs and other institutions of
13:14higher learning,
13:14what will they think?
13:17This is a, the most, I can only call it a law that promotes reverse casteism.
13:27He is not, his guilt is not established, but the punishment has already begun.
13:34How can we justify this?
13:40Okay, let me, let, let, let me stop you for a moment, because I want to hear other voices at
13:45this moment.
13:46I want to go to you, Mr. Kazi, because you're heading this, you know, Kazi, you're heading this student movement

15:01Mr. Kazi, of course, if he comes from a valid community, he comes from a small group, he comes from
15:06a small group,
15:06and, look, this is the thing that his narrative can be made, or it can also be made, that he
15:12has cheated.
15:13He has cheated. Because of the cheating, in this exam, he has used the chat GPT,
15:17so the failure of the IIT was the first of the failure of the IIT,
15:19that he has allowed mobile money for taking the exam.

15:23And then, it says, he has copied the paper from mobile chat GPT.

16:26You're also one of the protesting students at the moment.
16:29Are all the students, in a way, who are protesting, making this a battle about caste?
16:35There have been tragic suicides in IIT Bombay 3 this year.
16:39I'm putting up some numbers at this moment.
16:41Just look at those numbers of the number of suicides that have taken place in IITs all
16:46over.
16:46But in Mumbai alone, there have been three.
16:48But now it is taking a caste turn.
16:50It's becoming a caste battle.
16:51Is that what you want?
16:52Is that the reason why you're protesting?
16:57See, firstly, to address professor, we should follow the process of IIT Bombay itself to deal
17:06with if students are caught cheating in their examination.
17:09Okay.
17:12The procedure is that you have a mark sheet, your exam sheet will be taken from you, or a blank
17:18mark sheet or answer sheet will be given to you.
17:21You will be allowed to complete the examination.
17:23Within three days, a committee will be constituted.
17:27And upon that search, what do you mean, inquiry, findings will be taken from you, and if we want
17:40to give statistics as much as important, in 2016-2020, there are 120 students in 2016-2012
17:57thrice, they are more likely to be younger than other categories.

19:47is being targeted for alleged castist remarks he made,
19:51of which there is no proof yet,
19:53but it's already become a case of SCST atrocities.

20:02Misuse is a slightly strong word,
20:05given that the incident is very fresh,
20:07and as you and as the committee is deciding about,
20:10on the fact findings, we will have to wait on that.
20:13Now, you see, one of the interesting incidents,
20:15when you look at statistics,
20:16in 2006 to 2026,
20:21176 stu-sets have occurred across IITs,
20:23you know, in the last five years, 74.
20:26And if you look at the statistics of SCST,
20:28it's twice as much.
20:29So it says something more about how institutions are unfavorable,
20:33and not really a space for a SCST student to thrive.
20:37And we know how that castism operates throughout the education system.
20:40Now, for a second, let's remove a cast angle and observe.
20:44Now, you and me, Rajiv, we have studied in India,
20:46we have studied overseas,
20:47and we see how the academic culture is so diverse and variant,
20:51in the sense that, in India,
20:53it's the subordination of the student class
20:57towards the professorial class.
20:59And the students are meant to be the devotees of sorts,
21:03where the professors exercise
21:05an insurmountable amount of dominance over students
21:09in their everyday affairs.
21:11Now, we look at that,
21:12and then we compare that
21:14with these gangs of professors
21:16who ganged up at IIT to just back up,
21:19even though the committee is yet to form,
21:21we don't have a fact-finding yet,
21:23but this unofficial some committee of IIT professors
21:26who have never had elections
21:28have suddenly announced
21:29that they stand behind an alleged professor.
21:31Now, this is really a shameful act.
21:33What they ought to do is we wait
21:36for a fact-finding committee to say,
21:38but we stand with our students
21:40because our students are someone
21:41who we are here to cater to.
21:43We are not here to hobnob each other
21:45and then look around in this sense.
21:46Now, in this case,
21:47if we observe Sahil's mom and their incidents,
21:51there has been as many also general category students
21:54who have died by suicide.
21:55So this really explains to us
21:57how horrific institutions like IIT
22:00and the so-called Institutes of Eminence
22:02are really incapable
22:03and that's why they need humanity
22:05and humanities in them.
22:07You don't want to produce another logging machine
22:10in the form of human
22:11who's going to go out, write codes, and make money.
22:14You really need human beings to come out of that.
22:16And more important fact is
22:18when the professor shouted at Sahil,
22:23there's something that transpired in the two hours
22:26before Sahil took his unfortunate life.
22:28And we don't know that.
22:29And if the parents are coming up with certain evidence,
22:32we really need to bring to fore.
22:34However, the society consensus,
22:37like Mr. Kulkarni here,
22:39really comes out against this whole horrific death
22:43of a student
22:44and make it an issue about atrocity and its inefficiency.
22:47So we really look at issues
22:48where we should be holding an entire institute accountable.
22:53171 beautiful, talented lives have been lost at IITs.
22:58It really tells us
22:59of that nearly half percentage are from SCST.
23:03So certainly statistics tell us something.
23:05And before we jump over the fire,
23:07let us assess ourselves
23:09as to why have we not created a mechanism and system
23:12that really protects, promotes,
23:14and upholds the independence and values of students.
23:17Now, how about cheating?
23:18That's a nefarious issue.
23:19Does only one person cheat?
23:21Does only SC or ST cheat?
23:23Students cheat?
23:24And we don't know yet
23:24what has really occurring
23:26and what has transpired.
23:27We really need to examine these Dronacharyas
23:29or occupy various positions of course.
23:33Suraj, the same arguments that you're making
23:37can easily be made by the other side.
23:39You are also prejudging the issue in a way.
23:41You've also decided that the concerned individual
23:44has been targeted because,
23:45possibly because of his caste identity.
23:48That's the problem.
23:49You see, everyone is prejudging it
23:51without a proper inquiry.
23:52But I want to bring in at this...

23:55You are saying there is institutionalized
23:58caste discrimination in IITs.
24:00You have made a very serious allegation
24:02that there is institutionalized caste discrimination
24:04in IITs.
24:06And therefore, in some way,
24:07you're linking that to these suicides.
24:09Professor Raghu Murthu Gude,
24:11but the point is, yes,
24:13figures do show a disproportionate number
24:15of children from potentially underprivileged backgrounds
24:18or caste backgrounds
24:19who are, in a way,
24:21complaining about discrimination on the campuses.
24:24Do you go along with this
24:25as someone who is an alumnus of IIT Bombay
24:28and has taught in IITs?
24:30Is there any caste discrimination in our IITs?
24:34Well, that's a kind of a curious question.
24:38But we are dealing with one fact,
24:40and the fact is tragic,
24:42that the student has killed himself.
24:44The second one was that he was caught cheating,
24:48which is not largely being disputed.
24:50Then everything else is about, you know,
24:53waiting for the inquiry
24:54and whether the faculty are supporting
24:57the faculty who's suspended the dean
25:00or students are supporting something else.
25:03There is a trust issue.
25:05So the trust itself is in your question,
25:08whether there is a discrimination,
25:10there is a systemic issue.
25:12These SCST students are put in an environment,
25:16maybe they are not well prepared,
25:18maybe they are not getting enough help.
25:20So entire inquiry has to focus
25:22on all aspects of this problem,
25:25keeping in mind that it's the parents
25:27who are really waiting for, you know,
25:30in their mind, some justice
25:32because they have some sense of what went wrong.
25:35And the institute is saying something,
25:37the students are perceiving something.
25:39So it's a tragic situation.
25:41So instead of jumping around,
25:43making allegations, systemic bias
25:46on this side or that side,
25:48we need to understand this is an institute
25:51with tremendous reputation.
25:52My alma mater, I'm very proud of it.
25:55Tremendous research.
25:56Times have changed since I was a student.
25:59That time it was not so crowded.
26:01Rooms were literally single rooms.
26:03Now they are shared rooms
26:05and the number of students
26:06has gone up tremendously.
26:08So what are the factors
26:10that are changing over time?
26:12How is the competitiveness
26:13and the market and the social media?
26:15How are they all acting together
26:18to create a pressure cooker environment?
26:21Is IIT really special
26:23in terms of the number of suicides?
26:25This is a tough question,
26:27but ultimately we have to see,
26:29compare to other situations
26:31where how special are we?
26:34Are we really promoting suicide?
26:37Are we really being callous
26:39and not caring about it?
26:41I see lots of programs being set up
26:43for helping students' well-being and so on.
26:47So I think we need to calm down
26:49and wait for the inquiry to happen
26:51and then make systemic changes
26:54if there are faults and attributions,
26:57they will come out.
26:58So we need to build trust.
27:00Right now there is a serious lack of trust
27:02between students and faculty
27:04with the administration and so on.
27:06So we need to just wait.
27:11You need to just wait
27:12and that's a message
27:14Sudirna Kulkarni in conclusion
27:15I want to take to you.
27:17You've heard Suraj Yengde
27:18suggesting that there is
27:19institutionalized discrimination
27:20on caste basis in IITs.
27:23It doesn't necessarily mean
27:25that Sahil's death
27:26was because he belonged
27:27to a particular caste,
27:28but it has triggered something.
27:30Should there not be
27:31a clear, transparent inquiry,
27:33not just into this issue,
27:35but whether there is
27:36institutionalized discrimination
27:37in our IITs,
27:39supposedly the pride of this country.
27:43Rajdeep, I repeat,
27:45there must be absolutely
27:48impartial investigation
27:51and those guilty
27:53must face punishment.
27:57But I take strong objection
27:59to what Suraj Yengde
28:02has said
28:03that there is
28:04institutionalized discrimination,
28:07caste discrimination
28:08at IIT Bombay
28:10and by implication
28:13he probably means
28:15in all IITs
28:16and all institutions
28:18of higher learning
28:19in India.
28:20This is not just
28:21tarnishing the image
28:22of IITs,
28:24it's tarnishing
28:25the image of India.
28:26to say that India
28:29stands on
28:30institutionalized discrimination
28:32against a certain community
28:35everywhere
28:36in educational institutions
28:38and in society at large.

31:28as tarnishing
31:30the image of India,
31:31India collectively
31:32should be ashamed
31:32of itself
