Massive protests have erupted outside the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay campus following the death by suicide of second-year engineering student Sahil Wakhure. Placards demanding justice were raised as students called for an impartial probe and stricter action against Professor Suryanarayan Dula, who has been removed as dean. The professor faces cases under charges of abetment of suicide and the SC/ST Atrocity Act following allegations of caste-based harassment. While faculty members defended the professor's conduct during exam invigilation, protesting students presented a list of demands addressing campus wellness and discrimination.

00:00Let's take you straight to Mumbai where protests over the IIT Bombay suicide shocker continues.
00:05Now this protest continues to seek justice for the student Sahil Wakode who claimed his life by suicide three days
00:12ago.
00:12There's been massive sloganeering that has been going on in the streets of the financial capital with justice for Sahil
00:18placards as you can see on your screens being held at the protest side.
00:22These protests are happening outside IIT Bombay as we speak.
00:26It's a protest outside IITB asking for justice for Sahil.
00:29Remember Sahil Wakode is a second year engineering student who reportedly going by the sequence of events was caught cheating
00:36during the exam and after which he was asked to leave the examination hall.
00:42Now IIT Bombay insists that he was counseled and he was assured that he was not going to face any
00:47long term repercussions on his academic career because of that.
00:51But his family and other students insist that he was at the receiving end of a casteist attack at the
00:57hands, at the behest of Professor Nasuryanar and Dula.
01:01Now as a result, Professor Dula has been removed as dean after news came of Sahil reportedly dying by suicide.
01:10Remember no suicide note has been found so far.
01:13There has been a CCTV video which shows him coming out of the examination hall and moving towards his hostel
01:20and from there it apparently never came out.
01:24It has now been ascertained by the probe authorities as to what clues they can give about Sahil's last known
01:30movements.
01:31But this has become a big flashpoint, especially a students versus faculty flashpoint.
01:35A large part of the IIT Bombay faculty has thrown its weight behind Professor Dula saying that he was just
01:43carrying out his academic duties by ensuring fairness during the conduct of an exam.
01:47However, as you can see on his screens, protests continue in and outside the IIT Bombay campus with students claiming
01:56that what happened with Sahil was just the tip of the iceberg of a larger issue of concerns over student
02:03wellness,
02:04over fairness of treatment students and particularly over concerns over casteist practices that continue implicitly and explicitly on the IIT
02:13Bombay campus,
02:14which is why they are demanding justice.
02:17They have come up with a list of several demands.
02:19Most of some of them have been agreed to by the IIT Bombay faculty in an 18-point charter,
02:24but they insist that the investigation has to be free and fair and they want stricter action against the professor
02:32you see in the screen,
02:33Professor Suryan Arandoula.
02:34They want him to face action.
02:36Remember, he is already facing cases on charges of abetment of suicide as well under the SCST atrocity.
02:49The protest continues over the shocker which has been reported from IIT Bombay.
02:54Those are the shows you see on the right of the screens of students seeking justice for Sahil Vakure,
03:00the second year engineering student who reportedly died by suicide over the weekend.
03:06We are seeing massive sloganeering on the streets of Mumbai, both outside IIT Bombay,
03:11to complement what has already been happening inside the case for the last seven days.
