00:03:16day the divide that has widened across india's iit after a student committed death by suicide
00:03:23at iit mumbai's campus sahil vakode the student who committed suicide his parents have now held a
00:03:31protest just outside the iit bombay campus they want the arrest of the iit professor who they claim
00:03:37had discriminated on caste lines against their son parents alleging caste discrimination however the
00:03:44faculty has come out strongly in support of the professor saying there was absolutely no question
00:03:49of any caste discrimination and in fact it was a case of exam malpractices the police have filed a
00:03:56fire under section of the scst prevention of atrocities act faculty members who come out in support are
00:04:03insisting that this should not be seen as a case of caste discrimination how is the issue playing out
00:04:10it's going to be our big talking point tonight but first take a look at all that's happened dividing
00:04:15the iit's in the country 20 year old iit student sahil vakode's death by suicide has triggered protests
00:04:25and counter-protest in mumbai sile's parents are alleging caste discrimination they are demanding the
00:04:32immediate arrest of professor surya narayana doula who was the invigilator in the examination hall that
00:04:37sahil was asked to leave sile's parents alleged that professor doula made casteist remarks and that
00:04:43sahil was being pressured by him since last year was being pressured by him since last year

00:05:19investigators are examining ccd footage from the examination center to ascertain if sahil was found
00:05:24cheating during the exam the crime branch has scanned footage not just from the exam hall but also from the
00:05:30campus grounds and hostel area piecing together sahil's movements crime branch sources say ccdv captures
00:05:37sahil chatting inside the examination hall and then being taken out of the venue he's then seen walking
00:05:42towards his hostel but is not seen leaving the building afterwards students continued their
00:05:49protests outside the iit bombay campus urging stringent action the iit bombay students have
00:05:54also issued a statement saying that while they do not condone exam misconduct sile's death has compelled
00:05:59them to reflect on the systems within the institute the job that our demands complete accountability

00:06:16not an isolated suicide this is the second suicide within the past two months and the fourth suicide in
00:06:21the last year out of which three suicides with dalit cases iit bombay faculty members have rallied behind

00:08:30where does the faculty now stand are you firmly behind professor doula are you
00:08:34uh going to uh going to protest against the manner in which he is being suspended or targeted uh as
00:08:41the dean
00:08:41administrative affairs over the tragic death of young sahil death by suicide
00:08:47sir we have been firmly behind professor doula and we are also
00:08:51behind him as ever because we have been proved right today we received information that
00:08:57the crime branch has released some information that indeed sahil was uh
00:09:03indulging in academic malpractice that information has now been confirmed and also
00:09:10right from the beginning we have been saying that without proper investigation without proper
00:09:16inquiry our colleague has been vilified merely for performing his duty
00:09:22as a faculty member he is supposed to ensure that there is no academic misconduct in the
00:09:29uh classroom and any malpractice has to be reported to the authorities which he has done
00:09:35and without really finding out the situation people have you know vilified him his family is in
00:09:41tremendous amount of turmoil people have reached his ancestral village in andhra pradesh and they are
00:09:46trying to you know spoil his name so we are very deeply anguished on this and we have communicated this
00:09:53to
00:09:53the institute authorities on behalf of the faculty forum we have also released a couple of press releases
00:09:58where we have made our stand very clear we stand by very strongly with professor sure there was a march
00:10:04yesterday in the campus and interestingly there were more students and staff members and faculty members
00:10:10in that march so we are you you're saying you stand uh firmly behind professor dula but the university
00:10:18itself uh had apologized for having prematurely put out information in the public domain the university
00:10:25itself had uh had taken this action against professor dula so i want to understand the university
00:10:32administration on its part put out a note saying they apologized for the fact that they had put out
00:10:37uh information without going through the due process uh which had led to misgivings uh particularly
00:10:43about the allegations of of cheating and and using uh ai tools so i want to understand is the university
00:10:50administration with the faculty or not no they are with the faculty sir look uh the statement which has
00:10:56been given out by the university or the institute authorities that they are they are responsible to answer that
00:11:01we as faculty forum have a very clear stand that our colleague was merely discharging his duties
00:11:07as laid down by the institute senate approved rules when he found a student indulging in an academic
00:11:14malpractice he has reported the matter to the head of department and that is exactly what the procedure is
00:11:21so we are just saying that as teachers our job is to ensure that we look at the academic integrity
00:11:28of the
00:11:28students and it will be unfair to the other majority of the students who are sincere hard working and
00:11:34appear in the exams without indulging in any malpractices if i don't take an action or if i
00:11:39don't report the matter i am being very unfair to them so that is all our stand is we are
00:11:44saying that
00:11:45our colleague has done nothing wrong he has completely followed the rules of the institute
00:11:51okay that sets the stage for our talking point should iit students and faculty now wait for the probe
00:11:57before this issue becomes another political hot potato is it time to make the iits more inclusive and
00:12:03if so how should politicians leave iits alone and the big question is caste being weaponized in this entire
00:12:10storyline that's my face off tonight let's go straight to it me on my face off tonight on that big

00:12:28have both of you on the show prakash ambedkar to you first do you believe that in a case like
00:12:33this
00:12:33by focusing extensively on sahil's caste caste is being weaponized in a case of a tragic suicide
00:12:42at iit it's almost as if even before the inquiry is complete this is being seen as a case of
00:12:48caste
00:12:48harassment and discrimination
00:12:53mr ajdeb i should say it's a very story state of affair that you should address it in this manner
00:12:59you are witness to what happened in mandal commission go swami's case he was born to death
00:13:07who weaponized it those who are against reservation even in this case now the story is that he he was
00:13:16caught uh uploading the paper yes through chat to somebody yes
00:13:25and he was made a victim by the by the professors who's weaponizing it
00:13:32no no he was caught no no no let's be clear if he was conscious of one minute if he
00:13:37was
00:13:38if he was caught for an exam malpractice one minute sir if he was caught for an exam malpractice if
00:13:44he
00:13:44was and an inquiry is being held the inquiry may well prove there's a caste angle but at this stage
00:13:49instantly to say because sahil below was a dalit therefore this is a case of discrimination
00:13:54uh raja first understand that if he was caught copying he should have been chucked out there and
00:14:03there only which is not being done in the first case that's what happened when a whenever when a
00:14:10student is caught copying secondly he was being victimized by his professors
00:14:18and he was asked to go uh and if the story that is going on that he would be suspended
00:14:23he would have
00:14:24to leave a school he would have to leave a hostel what is this is this not victimization
00:14:31at no stage at no stage on record at no stage on record has he claimed that he was being
00:14:39victimized
00:14:39now his father is saying so this is not in you there are so many cases what happened in case
00:14:47of
00:14:47walmiki's case is the same college has the truth come out let me the truth has not come out as

00:15:09commits tragically suicide it instantly becomes a case which has to be seen through the lens of
00:15:14caste that's all i'm asking yes it has to be looked through the lens of caste because there are very
00:15:21few cases where this awareness committed suicide okay you give me one instead i will give you okay

00:15:38government's own data in lok sabha the iit is just a minute sir national institute of technology
00:15:44indian institute of management between 2018 and 23 61 suicide cases obcs is 18 12 scst others are
00:15:53general so 50 percent were from the general category 50 percent obc and scs so it's suicides in
00:16:21that's the case of all suicides you see let me tell you i have investigated
00:16:29the iit's are across the iit's are across the caste barrier let me put across you see those who have
00:16:30these suicide cases when i was a member of parliament not at this not at these places but at the
00:16:36at
00:16:37at diardo and other places also so i know what happens
00:16:43and how they are victimized okay the methodology is very very well documented by me into the government
00:16:51itself and the same pattern i see it here now i'm suggesting the students that you start victimizing
00:16:59those professors who are victimizing the students you make them the target it's not all professors
00:17:06who are involved or they are all scientists who are involved in there are some who are involved
00:17:12and they should be targeted now okay if you want to stop this suicide happening uh have suicide taking
00:17:19sir as i said there are general category students who are committing suicide at iit's as we've seen
00:17:24and there are dalit students just a minute sir i want there are let me tell you there are general
00:17:30students but they are supposed to commit suicide and these students these professors should be
00:17:36identified and they should be tortured by the students then it will stop okay can i just for
00:17:43a moment let me tell you after my report the suicide in the the research institutions like drdo and
00:17:54barc have totally stopped sir i've heard you can i just bring in rajat city rajat city you're hearing
00:18:01what prakash ambedkar is saying how do you respond he says prima facie to him this is a case of
00:18:06caste harassment and discrimination therefore it has to be seen through the lens of caste why are
00:18:12we avoiding that inconvenient question is what he's saying this is a perfectly wrong diagnosis of the
00:18:20situation of premier institutions of our country as your data is explicitly saying look at the
00:18:26proportionate uh suicide cases among uh the scst obc as compared to the general category students
00:18:33general category students there is seemingly greater rates of suicide it's 50 50 and it's 50
00:18:39percent general 50 percent obc daley one second general please allow sir i did not what
00:18:46please have the decency to allow others to put their point
00:18:50prakash let him finish go ahead rajat so uh look at the reservation rates which are 10
00:18:59typically around 50 55 percent in iits so largely there is proportionate uh suicide cases on both
00:19:05the sides on the general category as well as on the reserved category so clearly the data does not
00:19:10suggest that there is systemic issues that are involved you know these fans of dirty politics of
00:19:16caste politics in our country if they reach to the premier most institutions they will one thing they
00:19:21will ensure that the genuine issue of the students would be sidelined and the political brownie
00:19:27points would be plugged by all political parties of various use and colors you know i was in iit back
00:19:33in 2009 10 around that time then also students uh suicides used to happen and we force the director
00:19:39to resign all students come out on the streets in solidarity of the lost soul when today iit bombay
00:19:46students are hitting the streets they are not seeing what caste am i or what caste am i standing for
00:19:50they are there because the pressure is mounting and it is spreading like a plague in these premier
00:19:56institutions and something has to be done over the past 20 years now the data that ugc has compiled
00:20:02for deaths by suicide in all the iits last 20 years suggest that nothing has happened no but it is
00:20:08the
00:20:08congress government or the bjp government no no but you're saying you shouldn't bring in politics but
00:20:15when the father of the deceased says that his son was suffering just a minute sir when the father of
00:20:21the
00:20:21disease was says that his son was suffering from casteist slurs for the last few months should that
00:20:26not be taken on record should that not be investigated this is why all my all my answers were more
00:20:31generic
00:20:32in nature in this specific case investigation should happen also why did the father when he's making
00:20:38accusations and he has filed an FIR he's bringing the documents of the FIR and presenting before the
00:20:43media has he shown a single whatsapp message from his son uh uh who which could have indicated prime
00:20:49of ac that yes there was caste discrimination and his son was actually highlighting that issue
00:20:54for the past several months there are several institutional mechanisms and various iits now
00:21:00which were not there 10 15 years back did the student or did his parents not counsel the student to
00:21:05reach
00:21:05out to the acst committee the disciplinary committee if you say that there are there are professors that
00:21:12has to be reminded on certain people speak over each other either neither can be hurt but prakash ambedkar
00:21:18you see the fact is by politicizing this issue it is the question is not politics
00:21:25it's a question where the suicide is taking place and they are taking place at the instance of the professor
00:21:30no sir my point sir my point is by raising right by by insisting that this is linked to caste
00:21:38you have
00:21:39sir why not allow the inquire no no dr ambedkar why not allow sir just a minute why not allow
00:21:44the
00:21:45investigation to complete what stops why not say let there be a time-bound investigation if it is
00:21:50found that there was caste discrimination there was evidence of the same please throw the rule book
00:21:56now what i'm asking is the student that those professors
00:21:59who have taken law into the hands and force the students to commit suicide they should be targeted
00:22:06now and you see yeah i see the results within next one year no suicide will take place so whether
00:22:14general or no no let me get that clear whether a general uh category student or a dalit okay that's
00:22:21fair no no so so now you're you see the goalposts are being changed earlier you you're saying this is
00:22:27a
00:22:27case under scst atrocities why should it be under scst atrocities act is under scst he was targeted only
00:22:36because of that the there are general students who are also targeted because they challenge their professors
00:22:44so in this case they are also they are also child of some family who should do who need the
00:22:51justice
00:22:52also can i can i ask a politically inconvenient question are you saying the professor if a professor
00:22:58finds a student who has committed an examination by malpractice should he let him go should the
00:23:04professor why did he allow him to start to certainly examination in the first place no he was he was
00:23:09asked to leave he was asked to leave the cctv footage clearly shows he was asked to leave any student
00:23:15who
00:23:16is caught the rule is any student who is caught copying has to be thrown out of the class he

00:23:22asked he was not thrown he was kept the kept there sir the cctv footage he was allowed to pay

00:23:28to he was allowed to complete his paper rajat seti you know as i said there are competing narratives here
00:23:36the fact is that surely there is a need for a free fair independent investigation there are concerns
00:23:44that are being raised not just in this instance we've seen in other instances that dalit students have
00:23:49often complained of caste discrimination do you believe therefore that the system needs to have
00:23:54greater empathy or do you believe this is the wrong case that is being made out particularly in the case
00:23:59of sahil so rajdeep this is a deeply nuanced issue and the truth is somewhere in the gray but we
00:24:05don't
00:24:06have the patience to go and you know give more credence to the gray hair i can tell you when
00:24:10i was at
00:24:11iit they used to be preparatory courses done before the batch used to meet before the first year began
00:24:16this was done exclusively for the scst students to bring their skills up to the level of people who
00:24:22did not come through reservation now this was an exercise which was done with the right intentions
00:24:26but the fallout of this exercise of this preparatory exercise was that it ghettoized the scst student
00:24:32they formed bondings within themselves and were not able was there caste discrimination on your campus
00:24:37were dalit students and obc students treated differently even by their fellow students honest answer
00:24:43so a when this practice existed of having these preparatory courses these students used did not
00:24:49mingle with the remaining students yes there were this because of these institutional practices there
00:24:54were discrimination which was coming in not as a blatant casteist remark but just because there was
00:24:59segregation that happened because of this preparatory courses but over time after feedbacks that were
00:25:04incorporated in these practices were removed today you cannot ask your joint entrance examination rank
00:25:09because the moment you ask the rank you clearly know are you a reserved category student or not
00:25:14these practices have been systemically uprooted this is what i'm saying today use you speak you do an
00:25:19anonymous survey the students who are hitting 300 plus students are hitting the streets in iit mumbai they
00:25:25are not coming because of caste motivation they are coming because their fellow student has actually
00:25:30committed suicide and each one of them faces similar amount of stress the bigger elephant in the room is the
00:25:35stress of these students there is career pressure there is tremendous peer pressure you have the
00:25:40best of the best minds coming in and competing is that competition not intense this is of disproportionate
00:25:46levels and this is what i'm saying nonsense philosophy that is being set up what is it what is the
00:25:54nonsense philosophy any student who uh who qualifies he has to qualify the minimum marks to get into the
00:26:01examination and into the admission stage nobody has once he gets into the qualification qualified uh max
00:26:13he's given an admission it's not a charity that is given given so it's not a question therefore to say
00:26:19that he's below somebody else it's like saying that you are again practicing a caste system over there
00:26:26no no my my limited point that is what that is what so what's the one change you would like
00:26:32what's the one what's the one lesson what's the one lesson from science case you tell me what's the
00:26:37one lesson we should learn that he's a brilliant student what's the one lesson we should learn from
00:26:42science case if you are going to talk in terms i'm going to ask you one simple question that all
00:26:47those
00:26:47who have passed including yourself what is the contribution that you have made we are a begging
00:26:52bubble before before the world for all technologies so can i ask you a five can you say doctor
00:26:58dr ambedkar without making it personal what is the one lesson what is the one lesson from science what is
00:27:05the one lesson what's the one lesson from science case sir please answer my question please answer my
00:27:13question dr ambedkar what's the one lesson from science case what is the one big lesson
00:27:19Question is basically not one side case. It's a case where you have to change and you have
00:27:26to accept that those who you consider to be from the lower caste, they are not intelligent,
00:27:33they are intelligent. And since they have started competing with you, you have started
00:27:40individually pricking them up and seeing that they don't survive in the whole system. That
00:27:45is what is happening.
00:27:46Sir, there are three deaths in IITs in the last few months alone in IIT Bombay this year.
00:27:52To suggest that all these are linked to caste would perhaps be extremely unfortunate and
00:27:57unfair. The elephant in the room many would say is stress in the campus. And I think that
00:28:02is the issue. The mental health of students is what needs to be the focus, sir.
00:28:07Rajdeep, the question is basically saying stress. These students have stress. I give you one
00:28:14example. When I was student leader, all those medical students who scored very well in written
00:28:21examination, they were patted on the back. You know why?
00:28:31When you pat on the back, the january is known whether he has a january or he doesn't have
00:28:37a january. And who didn't have a january, he failed. During my period, any medical student
00:28:46was there. He had to compete three years, four years, five years, six years, seven years,
00:28:51and then he would become a doctor, MEBS doctor. You know, I, I, I, I have fought against all
00:29:00these things. You know, the fact is a young man, sir, I've heard you. Sir, I've heard you,
00:29:05Prakash Ambedkar. I've heard you. Intuitual victimization is taking place.
00:29:09Okay. You said that it's a very sensitive issue. A young man has lost his life. Final word,
00:29:14Rajat Sethi. You're seeing that this is becoming acrimonious. This reflects the political climate.
00:29:19There is a radicalism, radical Ambedkarism also, which believes that caste discrimination exists
00:29:25on the campus. It has to be rooted out. Please do that. Root out all kinds of discrimination,
00:29:32but please root out stress from the campuses. That has to be the central message. I mean,
00:29:38today AI is becoming an overpowering technology. Worldwide universities like MIT have said that
00:29:43students cannot be fighting AI and professors cannot be penalizing the use of AI. They have
00:29:49has to be a better syncretic usage of human intelligence and artificial intelligence that
00:29:54have to coexist. Here, the pressure of being devastated because of being removed from the
00:30:01examination hall and the kind of emotional overload that that moment can bring in. It was
00:30:06a split second when he could not, he did not have the support system. Sahil did not have the support
00:30:11systems around him to actually control. I think this is where that split moment decision of
00:30:16of this overburdened emotion of being chucked out of the classroom, of the examination hall,
00:30:21which took his life. This has to be stopped. The issue and the solution is not to be found
00:30:26somewhere in the caste. The issue has to be found in the stresses on the campus. Stress management
00:30:31is paramount, should be done at the earliest. This is a plague, Rajdeepji.
00:30:36I'm going to leave it there. I've heard both sides. I've heard both sides. Prakash Ambedkar

00:30:49Let's turn to our other big story that we've been tracking. Two key accused in the Jammui
00:30:54horror case of molestation, sexual harassment and worse have now been shot in the leg in a police
00:31:00encounter and arrested. This comes after the shocking video of a video of a minor girl and a
00:31:07boy being surrounded, assaulted and hounded by a group of men triggered outrage across Bihar in
00:31:13the country. Three other accused have already been arrested. But as the police action gathers space,
00:31:18guess what? Once again, a political controversy is brewing as to how the Bihar government responded
00:31:24to the crime with ministers facing the heat over remarks that appear to downplay the incident.
00:31:29a video that shocked the nation. A minor girl and boy surrounded by men, groped, molested,
00:31:48assaulted and hounded in Bihar.
00:31:56And now police action. The main accused Nandan Yadav and another accused Hari Ram were shot in the
00:32:06leg during a police encounter. Three accused were arrested earlier. But the question goes beyond
00:32:15arrest. Last year at India Today Conclave, Samrat Chawzi said that he would resign if crime
00:32:20happened on his watch.
00:32:44happened on his watch.
00:32:48Today he is chief minister. But when the crime did occur, instead of just outrage, what
00:32:53came was the language of minimization.
