10:26As a result we have the opportunity to kind of do some story telling tricks
10:32where we can actually say hey this is a culture that evolved in isolation for a while.
10:36So how do you preserve what we know about Incan culture
10:39but at the same time give it a uniqueness to say hey it's unmistakably Tomb Raider
10:43but it's that way because they just evolved in isolation for a while.
10:48And when you play the game you're going to find out why.
10:51And then you can have a lot of fun with the overgrown aesthetic as well as
10:55obviously some of the dirt that Lara's picked up as she's traversing through these environments.
10:59That's it.
11:00Yeah I mean that's the part of just making sure that the environment feels like you are the person
11:04who discovered the first in a very very long time.
11:07Because that's what she does and we want to make sure that that's how it feels as well.
11:10Yeah and Lara's not a delicate flower.
11:14She looks good but she is going to get her hands dirty, she's going to dig in.
11:17Heck yeah.
11:18She's going to go anywhere and she's going to follow her instincts similar to how she's doing here.
11:23She's like I need that cog to get that puzzle moving.
11:25I found one but that has opened up the path to somewhere else.
11:29So curiosity is driving her.
11:31You're going to be along helping her find that way and we get into beautiful traversal
11:35that makes sure that Lara's physical attributes, her abilities, her athleticism is on full display in these moments.
11:44She's at her peak right?
11:46She's at her peak.
11:47Yep.
11:48Love that.
11:48Now the puzzles like you mentioned, they are such an iconic part of Tomb Raider for me as well.
11:55There's so many that I remember from Greece, Egypt, all of the levels.
11:58Can you go a little bit deeper about how you've evolved them for Legacy of Atlantis?
12:04Similar to what we talked about reimagining, it's about saying, hey, this puzzle as it existed, you know, what was
12:10the original intent here?
12:11And if that intent is something that we are like, hey, that's a really strong guiding principle, how do we
12:18take that and make it the ultimate version of what it intends to be?
12:24Sometimes that means sticking very close to the formula.
12:26Sometimes it means deviating into another area, but we do so in a way that's very thoughtful and very precise
12:32because we never want to make it feel like we're ignoring the history of this adventure that we're reimagining.
12:37We wanted to feel like it's the re-debut of this game.
12:42And so adding new details, like giving her gear items that allow her to extract more lore from the world,
12:49preserving some of those classic abilities like push-pull, traversal being fluid and dynamic.
12:56We'll get into combat a little bit later, but these are all just Tomb Raider things at the core.
13:01Amazing.
13:02Yeah, but just going back to the scanner thing, you can use the scanner if you are a fan and
13:06just want to, like Jeff said, dig deep into the lore.
13:09You can scan things and find out more, but you can also use the scanner as a clue to the
13:14puzzles.
13:14Cool.
13:15It gives you clues if you want to, if you don't want to, you can just play it your way.
13:19Nice.
13:20And that's us trying to be sensitive to the players because there are those that want to have this full
13:24breadth of systems, but we also have our hardcore players that are like, I want two pistols and no help.
13:29Yeah.
13:30And we're accommodating them as well.
13:31Yeah, I love that.
13:32Giving players way more choice and following their lead as well.
13:36That's so cool.
13:37It sounds like you guys have done a lot of research as well and really respected a lot of the
13:41environments that you're talking about in real life, as well as creating a more fantasy realm for Lara to explore.
13:48That sounds sick.
13:48I mean, research is a massive part of what we've been doing because the cultures that we've been working on
13:54recently is, you know, Incans, Asian Greece, Egypt, and we want to be respectful to those cultures and to the
14:00history that they have.
14:02And also for the players to feel like they are actually archeologists, not just playing the game.
14:06So that's why we've done so, so much research.
14:09And when we decided to partner with the Hogs on this game, you know, co-develop it together, we knew
14:15that they were also fans of the game.
14:16They, I think Maddie is actually one of the designers on the, yeah.
14:21So like we've got a designer on the team who literally used to make Tomb Raider levels for fun.
14:25Yeah.
14:25And he's really well known in the community.
14:27So these are real fans that are making the game.
14:29Wow.
14:30But at the same time, we're also, you know, we have a luxury of very talented developers who ask the
14:35right questions, who push in the right places to make sure we get really cool stuff that's fun to play
14:39on screen.
14:40And watching this whole process unfold over the last few years has just been a treat as a developer.
14:46I bet.
14:47That's so special.
14:48That's so cool.
14:49What we're seeing here is Lara movement in full action there.
14:53She's got a lot of swagger.
14:54Like I said, she's got skis looking.
14:56Can you talk to me a little bit about some of the innovations that Lara's movement can be experienced in
15:03Legacy of Advantis and how it'll feel for players to play as her?
15:06What we hope is, we hope it feels familiar.
15:09We hope that you can pick up the sticks and you're like, wow, this is like putting on an old
15:12pair of shoes that are super comfortable.
15:15But at the same time, we've given her a couple of more tricks that she can use to help navigate
15:20the world, such as a grapple cup that can give her some unique abilities to interact with objects,
15:25to use it to navigate.
15:26Those little touches are additive and are meant to enhance the experience while still preserving that original intent.
15:32Very cool.
15:33But that cog puzzle, I mean, she basically knew she needed to find it.
15:37She used her instinct.
15:38She moved upwards through this beautiful little pocket city that was adjacent to this temple, discovered things about it along
15:46the way, got inside, found this beautiful water clock whose purpose is unknown.
15:51She gets it and look at this.
15:53There she is.
15:55There she is.
15:55That's Lara, baby.
15:56Oh, my God.
15:57Lara never comes in through the front door and she never leaves without style.
16:03Oh, that's sick.
16:06So, yeah, we've got this beautiful landscape around us.
16:09The environment art is stunning.
16:11I know.
16:12Incredible.
16:12I mean, we try, we try to, when you play in this game, like, we want you to explore and
16:19just enjoy exploring the environment apart of doing everything else.
16:22Like, if you just want to walk around and want to figure out what was actually happening in this place
16:26and how we, what the people were doing there hundreds of years ago, you can do so.
16:31And just working on all those vistas, they, it's just so awesome.
16:35Like, our teams put so much heart and passion into building the, exactly, the vistas like this.
16:42Look at that.
16:42This is one of my favorite, one of my favorite moments is the postcard shots where you're alone in the
16:47wilderness.
16:48You can hear the birds chirping, the leaves rustling.
16:51There's no time clock.
16:53We want people to slow down when they play the game.
16:56We want them to say, take it in, enjoy it.
16:58You don't have to speed run it, but if you're listening and you do, let us know what your time
17:02is because we'll keep track.
17:05But that's great.
17:06It's the type of audience that we have.
17:08You know, we have people that want to challenge themselves to move through the experience as fast as they can
17:11and those that want to sightsee.
17:14And the game just is welcoming to all.
17:16I'll be sightseeing for sure.
17:17I've got tears in my eyes.
17:18I'm not even joking.
17:19That is absolutely incredible.
17:21Wow.
17:22I wanted to go back a little bit and talk a little bit more about Lara's toolkit and how that's
17:28evolved here.
17:28So we have mentioned her, her grapple hook, her, we saw the scanner in action as well.
17:34How is that really going to affect the gameplay for players and what other tools has she got off her
17:39sleeve?
17:40Well, we've got the, like you said, the two items that we've already discussed.
17:43And as Artic mentioned, the scanner has some dual functionality.
17:46It can not only give you some hints that are optional if you don't want to engage with it, but
17:50it also gives you some world lore.
17:52But on top of that, we've got some things under the hood in our PDA that we can use to
17:56help give her some slightly different skill attributes.
17:59If you want to equip her in a certain way to help meet challenges as you can face them.
18:05We've got our crafting system because we want to make sure that, you know, finding med packs…
18:11In the middle of the jungle.
18:13It's cool.
18:14A little bit old school.
18:15A little bit old school.
18:16Yeah.
18:16In a tomb 10,000 years old.
18:18It's lucky that there's a first aid kit here.
18:19What do you mean?
18:20They're not there all the time?
18:20What the heck?
18:21So we were like, how do we make this still feel like Tomb Raider, but at the same time, like,
18:25not break immersion?
18:26And so that's where, like, crafting is a perfect addition to it.
18:29It lets her scavenge the world for resources, use her knowledge and her ability to craft something useful.
18:35And on top of that, she can use recipes to provide certain gameplay buffs that are going to help give
18:40her short-term advantages.
18:42If you want, you don't have to.
18:43And you can just play the old school way, dual pistol all the way through with healing items if you
18:49want.
18:49If you want to put your heads down and power through it, you can do it, but these things are
18:52available to you and we think they're fun to engage with.
18:55Amazing.
18:56The Tomb of Qualipek waterfall gate is opened.
18:58Done it.
18:59Now here we're advancing to a little bit later in the game.
19:02We're now just on the cusp of a very memorable first encounter.
19:08So, folks, hold on.
19:09Here we go.
19:09Oh, I remember this, I think.
19:11But we've got to do it with style.
19:13Yes!
19:15I'm so worried you were going to include us on that.
19:17That's so sick.
19:18Oh, she's so cool.
19:20You know, early stages of the project, we were like, hey, you know, if we're really going to do this,
19:23we want to represent Lara in a way that she's fully recognizable.
19:26And part of that is the acrobatics.
19:28Lara, without the acrobatics, is still cool Lara, but not classic Lara.
19:33And here, they're on full display, but what I hope people appreciate is that there's more grounding, more believability to
19:39it in how she moves.
19:41She's still having fun.
19:43But...
19:43It's synonymous to her, but yeah.
19:45Yeah.
19:45Like you mentioned, the more grounded when she was kicking the cold puzzle, that looked sick.
19:49It was so cool.
19:51Those little interactive moments add a sense of cinematic spectacle time to time, which is nice.
19:55It allows the game to still feel like a summer blockbuster.
19:59Yeah.
19:59And speaking of...
20:01Hello!
20:02Who are these guys?
20:03Hello!
20:05The Rauker design looks really cool, Arik, as well.
20:08Brilliant.
20:08Thank you.
20:09I love the addition of the feathers.
20:11Yeah, I mean, we wanted to keep the red color, you know, which you remember from the original one.
20:15Of course.
20:16But obviously, our knowledge about the dinosaurs evolved so much since 1996, so we wanted, like with everything in this
20:22game, we want to add on top of what's been done already.
20:25So we kept the color, we add our own silhouette designs, and we added the feathers to make it unique
20:31for the legacy of Atlantis.
20:33Nice!
20:33And their combat has been, like, dramatically overhauled.
20:36They're no longer just charging at you and just taking bullets.
20:38They're thinking, they're evading.
20:41You have the ability to use the health reticle when an aim downside to be able to kind of assess
20:45where they're at so you can target your shots.
20:47And with Laura's combat, love seeing the axe make a little appearance.
20:52Yeah.
20:53Utility gear for the win.
20:55But when she's actually in combat, she's got a loop of, you know, assessing the situation, responding, and then moving
21:03to make sure she can then reassess.
21:04And that's, Laura's always in motion.
21:06Her combat is fluid.
21:08It's organic.
21:09Yeah.
21:09But at the same time, it helps her kind of overcome challenges and get the upper hand.
21:13Yeah.
21:14Yeah.
21:14Basically, she needs to keep moving all the time.
21:16It's like a dance for them.
21:18Yeah.
21:18That's sick.
21:19And you can see a little blue dot on the bottom, which enables you to go into the focus mode,
21:24which slows down time, which is one of my favorite features in our game.
21:29For sure.
21:30When that fills up, she can go into hyper focus, slow down time, and really pull off those precision shots.
21:35But if you're going to do that, like, give her some style when she does it.
21:39Absolutely.
21:39Let those acrobatics shine.
21:41Hello.
21:42There's our girl.
21:43That's the girl, yeah.
21:44Yay.
21:45Oh my gosh.
21:46What was it like reimagining such an iconic boss fight here as well as the other ones in Atlantis?
21:52How was that?
21:54From our perspective, it was just an honor to work on a T-Rex, but, like, we've worked for such
21:59a long time to just make sure it's perfect from our perspective.
22:02And we were trying to be respectful to the OG one, you know, the moment when she's coming out, like,
22:07throughout the corner and you see the T-Rex.
22:10Yeah.
22:10We couldn't do exactly this, but we wanted to have the same emotions when people see her for the first
22:15time.
22:15And then just working on a design, it was such a blast.
22:18Yeah.
22:18And when you see her, it's like she still has some of those classic DNAs.
22:21She's got that beautiful green with that yellow pockets under her eyes.
22:25But we've also got some added elements in the feathers that also provide a little bit more of a reason.
22:30She's in a geothermal valley.
22:31I mean, she's going to have a little bit of plumage that feels like it matches that environment.
22:36And it just gives her this really recognizable signature look.
22:39Yeah.
22:39I just love that we added those red feathers because there's so many...
