00:03After violent gun attacks left entire villages looted
00:07and thousands sought refuge in the region's UN base earlier this year,
00:12the local communities still live in fear of further violence.
00:16UN peacekeepers are attempting to reassure the population.
00:21In Abiyanom, it was around the fact that they were concerned we would leave
00:29and that as a community they would be vulnerable without us.
00:34I assured them that the UN has a mandate to protect civilians
00:39so we would stay with the people of Abiyanom,
00:43but did encourage them and promise them that we would support them
00:48in trying to find solutions to the communal violence that was taking place.
00:55The population does not only feel violence,
00:58but also worsening environmental conditions.
01:02The area is particularly vulnerable to floods during the rainy season.
01:08There have been a number of issues in that area
01:12which range from security, communal violence,
01:18a concern around flooding and the level of water that is around the Bentiu area.
01:26This is supposed to be an El Nino year and a super El Nino year,
01:32so concerns that we're going to have both drought and flooding.
01:38With little help from the government,
01:40the inhabitants hope for the help of the peacekeepers
01:43to protect them from the rising waters.
