Peru's Callao installs giant statue of Pope Leo ahead of papal visit
Peruvians installed a 14-meter statue of Pope Leo XIV in a park in Callao, on Friday (November 6), using a crane to lift its torso and head into place. The statue was transported overnight by truck from the workshop where it was built.
Sculptor Rafael Gutierrez said it had a galvanized steel interior and a catalyzed nautical paint coating to protect it from sea salt and corrosion. Onlookers shouted "The Pope is a Chalaco," a term for people from Callao, as the work was completed.
Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to arrive in Peru on November 11, with an official route passing through Callao's Costa Verde, where the statue stands.
