00:00Hello, my name is Jack Mayhew. I'm a PhD candidate from Sydney and I'm honoured to have been nominated
00:06for the New South Wales Nutrien Next Gen Ag Leaders Award. It's a genuine privilege to be recognised
00:11alongside so many passionate young people who have already contributed so much to the industry.
00:17My own pathway in agriculture is a little bit unconventional. I grew up in Sydney,
00:22but agriculture shows introduced me to livestock, producers and the wonderful community that
00:26surrounds them. That experience ultimately led me to study animal science, start working in livestock
00:32production research and now undertake a PhD at the University of Sydney, where I'm working on new
00:38technologies to help beef producers make better decisions about their cattle and carcass outcomes.
00:44Outside of work and my studies, I'm incredibly fortunate to have been invited back to coach my
00:49high school's agriculture show team at Oak Hill College. Over the past five years, I've helped
00:54grow up from 10 students to more than 75. Seeing these young people from suburban Sydney discover
01:01agriculture, build confidence and go on to pursue opportunities in an industry that they would
01:06otherwise may never have had access to is genuinely my proudest accomplishment to date.
01:12I've also had the chance to be a part of the Hawkesbury District Agriculture Association,
01:16where I currently serve as the youngest member of the inaugural board. It's a role I don't take lightly,
01:22but I'm proud to represent the second largest agriculture show in NSW. I guess to me,
01:29leadership means creating pathways for others, staying open to new ideas and leaving the industry
01:35a little bit stronger than you found it. Thank you again for this nomination. I'm truly grateful to
01:41be a part of the NextGen AgriLeaders Award.
