SCP-1471 has no listed developer and is somehow able to bypass the application approval process to go directly to distribution. 00:00Sarah was always a girl with morbid interests. Part of it was likely her way of coping with

00:05the responsibility that had fallen on her after the tragic death of her parents, who

00:09died in a car accident. It left her as the sole legal guardian of her fifteen-year-old

00:14brother, William. William, of course, idolized his older sister, who always showed him the

00:20coolest new music and snuck him into watching R-rated movies. Most importantly, she did

00:26her best to shield him from the harsh reality of their parents' sudden deaths. She kept

00:31up a brave face for him, packing his lunches and driving him to school every day. She even

00:36helped him get his very first cell phone. Sarah herself had an iPhone, which was becoming increasingly

00:42common at the time, but she gave William her old flip phone from a few years ago, just

00:47so she could keep track of him. The phone still worked well enough to use. Just like you can

01:01This was in the early 2010s, when cell phone users were gripped with app fever. Before every

01:07company had one, the app and play stores were full of hundreds of goofy apps that barely

01:12did anything but which seemed worth downloading just for the novelty. Apps that just made sound

01:18effects or let you pretend you were drinking a glass of beer. Sarah's favorite app was one

01:23she'd found completely at random, called Malo. There was no information on the developers,

01:28no reviews, and it was completely free. But Sarah had been drawn in by the description,

01:34never settle for those awkward feelings of being alone ever again. Malo is an exciting and interactive

01:40experience that will keep you engaged and intrigued. The anxiety of social situations can be nerve-wracking,

01:47but after just a few hours of Malo, you will soon forget all about those painful emotions of

01:52disappointment. Be part of the new craze that is quickly becoming the next social substitute.

01:58Remember, the more you participate, the more Malo will engage you. Your experience is completely up to

02:05you. Even though Sarah put on a brave face for her little brother's sake, acting like the kind of

02:11girl who could laugh in the face of death, she was lonely. Though she didn't know what was going to

02:16happen when she used the app, she was willing to give it a try. Curiously, once it was downloaded,

02:21it never showed up as an icon on her homepage. Sarah checked her download history. It seemed like

02:26the app had downloaded. Was this all a scam? Just as she was thinking about deleting it,

02:32she got a text. It was a picture of the parking lot of the office where she worked. But in

02:37the picture,

02:37standing under a streetlight, was a figure. It looked like a human body with the head of a skeletal

02:43dog and long, shaggy black fur. It wasn't doing anything, just standing there, looking at the

02:50camera with its big, blank eyes. Sarah was delighted. The app known as Malo version 1.0.0, also known

02:58as

02:58SCP-1471 is a free 9.8 megabyte application for mobile devices. It has no listed developer and is

03:06somehow available on all app marketplaces, despite no developer verification process. Its sole purpose

03:13appears to be sending pictures to the user that contains a shaggy humanoid figure with the head of

03:18his skeletal wolf or dog, this figure being designated SCP-1471-1. All mobile devices that have Malo installed

03:27should be confiscated by the Foundation immediately. Look at this app I found today,

03:31she told William when the two of them sat down to eat some Chinese takeout. It reads your GPS location

03:36and sends you a photo of places you've been with this super cute monster edited in. William thought

03:41his sister was cool, but he still couldn't vibe with her taste sometimes. He looked at the photo,

03:46taking in the strangeness of the entity standing under the streetlight. Nothing about it was cute to him.

03:51But then, his sister was the kind of girl who preferred Freddy Krueger over Channing Tatum,

03:56so her bar for cute was always different to other people's. But even if he didn't think the creature

04:01was cute, William still liked the idea of the app. Maybe he could use it to scare his friends,

04:07send them pictures of the creature in the halls of their high school as a spooky prank.

04:11Could you get that on my phone? William asked. Sarah shook her head. I mean,

04:15those older phones do have something like an app store, she explained. But I think Malo might be Apple

04:20only. Well, said William, handing her his phone. Maybe we could look anyway. Sarah opened up the

04:26internet on her brother's phone and searched up Malo version 1.0.0. To her surprise,

04:31a download link came up, and the file was even compatible with the older phone. She turned the

04:37screen around to show William. He was thrilled and started the download straight away. The text came not

04:42long after. It was a picture of the school courtyard, with the shaggy creature lurking behind the bleachers.

04:48Something about it seemed more sinister than the picture on Sarah's phone.

04:53William was terrified, but he couldn't explain why. It was just a picture of the same creature as

04:58before. Don't be such a baby, Sarah said, sensing her brother's distress. Look how happy he is to see

05:04you. William let out a strained laugh. I'm sure he'll grow on you eventually. Sarah put a hand on his

05:11shoulder. Tell you what, if you can put up with him for one whole week, we'll go see that movie

05:16you

05:16wanted to see. If he still gives you nightmares, we'll delete it. If you end up liking it, we'll

05:20laugh about it later. Deal? William agreed to her deal. But something still felt off about the whole

05:26thing. It wasn't until later that he realized why. His phone was old enough that it didn't have a GPS

05:32feature. So where was it getting the data to generate the pictures?

05:37After Mal O was installed, no icons or shortcuts are created. The program also can't be deleted by

05:43program manager applications. During the first 24 hours after installation, the user will receive

05:49photos of SCP-1471 every three to six hours. The siblings decided to name the creatures. Sarah called

05:56hers Cassandra, and William decided to name his Capone. He picked the name because of a story his

06:03teacher had told in history class about how the St. Valentine's Day massacre, Al Capone became

06:08convinced he was being haunted by the ghost of one of his victims, another gangster named Jimmy Clark.

06:13It was a lesson about how easy it is for fear to get the better of you, and William thought

06:18it

06:18would serve as a reminder that Mal O was no more real than any ghost story. Normal life continued for

06:24Sarah and William, only occasionally punctuated by image texts from Mal O. They were of William's

06:30school, the bus stop, their street, places along Sarah's commute, even the mall where they did most

06:36of their shopping. All harmless outdoor places that anyone could pull a picture from off of Google

06:41Street View. 48 hours after Mal O's installation, the user will start to receive images of SCP-1471-1

06:49at locations that they have recently visited. After 72 hours, the user will receive images of SCP-1471-1

06:57following them in real time. William was sitting in class when his teacher pulled him aside and told

07:03him to go to the principal's office. When he got there, Sarah was waiting, a terrified expression on

07:08her face. She was frantic, asking questions about Capone, about where William had seen him, or if he'd

07:15received any pictures of Capone where William or any of his friends were in the picture. William was

07:20confused. He'd been in class all day, and hadn't had a chance to check his texts. He pulled his phone

07:26out of his pocket, and sure enough, there were two new pictures from Mal O. William felt a cold chill

07:31over him as he looked at the pictures. One was in the hallway of his school, and the second was

07:37right

07:37outside his classroom door. Sarah showed William her phone. Her latest image from Cassandra was taken

07:43from inside their apartment. There's no way to delete it, Sarah said. That morning, she'd gone to

07:49a phone repair shop, and the man there couldn't even confirm that a file had been installed on her

07:53phone. It was like it had never existed at all. Sarah and William ran to the car. They knew they

07:59were being chased, but they didn't know by what. They didn't even know what they could do to escape it.

08:05They just sat in the car, processing. Finally, Sarah started the engine, and they took off. Then,

08:11William's text alert went off. Don't look at it, Sarah pleaded. William knew he should have stopped

08:17himself, but he had to know. He opened his phone. The image on the screen was of the inside of

08:23the

08:23car, taken as if from the hood while the vehicle was moving. In the foreground were William and Sarah,

08:29dressed in the clothes they were currently wearing, with terrified looks on their faces.

08:33And behind them was Capone, grinning with his skeletal teeth, his shaggy black body big enough that

08:38he seemed to take up the entire back seat, as if he would tower over them if he were standing.

08:44Slowly, Sarah and William both turned around. They fully expected to see the creature right behind

08:48them, but the truth somehow felt even worse. There was nothing there. Sarah immediately pulled over.

08:55She and her brother jumped out of the car and ran the rest of the way home. They locked themselves

08:59in

09:00the bathroom, the only door that locked from the inside, aside from the front door. The text alerts

09:05on both their phones continued to go off. Sarah screamed at them, as if Malo was listening,

09:10telling whatever was sending the text to leave them alone. Eventually, the text stopped. Everything

09:16seemed to calm, until out of nowhere, Sarah screamed and pointed to the bathroom mirror.

09:21It's behind me! She kept looking back and forth from the wall behind her to the mirror,

09:26but William couldn't see anything. She kept moving her head around, frantic, always repeating,

09:31It's right there! Don't you see it? William didn't. Or if he did, he was too focused on what was

09:36right

09:36in front of him, namely trying to get his sister to calm back down. Sarah, you're okay, William said.

09:43Nothing is there, I promise. We have to leave the room now. We can't stay in here for the rest

09:47of our

09:47lives. Sarah nodded. Despite the fact that she was shaking, she unlocked the door and opened it.

09:53But she was still terrified, because she knew Cassandra was still there in her peripheral vision.

09:58She only seemed to fully relax at all when he finally called the police. He ignored the latest

10:03texts from Malo when he opened the phone. This was how William and his sister came to the attention

10:08of the SCP Foundation. They were both in the final stages of exposure to this enigmatic digital anomaly,

10:15the period starting 90 hours after the program's installation. Once the user has reached this

10:21stage, there's no way of reversing Malo's effect. The user will start to see SCP-1471-1 everywhere,

10:28first in reflective surfaces, but then everywhere you go, just out of the corner of your eye.

10:34The creature has never been recorded doing anything directly malicious to its users,

10:38and in fact, there are some who claim it seems to be trying to communicate. However,

10:43in more extreme cases, the distress caused by its constant presence can be too much to handle.

10:48Both William and Sarah were taken by the SCP Foundation to have their conditions assessed.

10:54William was confirmed to have a less extreme exposure to the anomaly than his sister.

10:58He did eventually start seeing the creature he called Capone in mirrors and other reflective

11:02surfaces, but it never progressed beyond that. He was able to live a somewhat normal life.

11:07Although he started pulling a curtain over his bathroom mirror and had to close his eyes whenever

11:12he walked past a pond or a pane of dark glass. Sarah, on the other hand, was haunted by Cassandra

11:18wherever she went. Cassandra was always looming over her shoulder, standing next to her reflection

11:23in the mirror. When Sarah tried to sleep, she could feel Cassandra's presence right next to the bed.

11:29Sarah couldn't keep up the brave face for her little brother anymore.

11:32The girl who used to laugh at horror movies now spent every waking moment terrified of the creature

11:37that only she could see. Not even amnestics could clear the image from her mind. She was only able

11:43to live with the dread for so long. When she died, she was barely in her twenties. Despite the tragic

11:49loss,

11:50William never blamed the mallow creature for Sarah's death. To him, following the people who download the

11:55app was just part of their nature. Blaming them would be as pointless as blaming the car for his

11:59parents' fatal accident all those years ago. William had long adjusted to Capone's presence

12:04in his life when he started seeing his therapist, Dr. Laura Brins. She worked closely with the

12:10Foundation and had treated other patients who had once downloaded the MalO app.

12:14I was scared when I first saw him, William told her. It happened just as you told me. The messages,

12:20the pictures, seeing him around every corner afterwards. I was so young, who wouldn't have lost it?

12:25William found himself talking about his experiences like it had happened when he was a child.

12:29It was hard to believe that sometimes it had only been two years. Sometimes he was hit with the

12:35realization of how little time had passed, and other times it felt like Capone had always been

12:39a part of his life. Dr. Brins was sympathetic. Believe me, William, I know many people have

12:45reacted the same way, she said. Fear is a more common reaction to the unknown than you'd think.

12:51The drive home from the doctor's office wasn't very long, five minutes or ten if it was by train.

12:56William was used to doing it without looking too hard at the mirrors, or at least not looking directly

13:01at the skeletal dog-like face in the reflection. But the therapy session he'd just come out of made

13:07him feel braver. Dr. Brins was right. Fear was a reaction to the unknown. And by this point in his

13:13life, Capone was very familiar. William wasn't afraid of Capone, only by the tragedy that he

13:18represented. Maybe his lingering feelings would change if he tried to understand the creature.

13:24So he started talking to Capone. He left the mirrors in his home uncovered,

13:28and waved to Capone's reflection in the window when he came home. He talked like he might to a pet,

13:33not expecting a response, about what happened at school, about his friends, about his search for

13:39a new job, and his upcoming college applications. Capone's face was always blank, but William started

13:44to feel like the creature understood what he was saying. Even if that was just all in his head,

13:49it was comforting to talk to someone, even if they never talked back. It became a routine.

13:55When he came home from school, he waved to Capone before sitting down in front of the TV.

13:59He said goodnight and goodmorning to it when he went to brush his teeth. He waved goodbye to it when

14:05he parked his car and went to school. And when he turned back to look, Capone would always wave back.
