00:00And we go to Brazil now, as the Supreme Court spent all day deliberating on a complaint filed by André
00:06Mendoza,
00:07a Bolsonaro-nominated Supreme Court minister, against fellow minister Alexandre de Moraes,
00:12who presided over the investigation that resulted in Jair Bolsonaro's imprisonment.
00:17Our correspondent, Brian Mir, has more information.
00:22A Supreme Court session in Brasilia today related to the Banco Master scandal,
00:27the largest financial corruption scandal in Brazilian history,
00:31ended without any major decision today, as Justice Flavio Dino asked for more time to look over evidence.
00:37Today's hearing was an issue of protocol, basically.
00:41Two weeks ago, Justice André Mendoza, who is the presiding judge over the investigation,
00:47selectively released messages from a social media app showing Daniel Vorcaro,
00:54the former owner of Banco Master, who is currently jailed,
00:58sending messages to another justice, Alexandre de Moraes.
01:01Alexandre de Moraes, as some may remember,
01:04is the justice who oversaw the seven-year-long fake news inquiry,
01:09which resulted in, among other things, a one-month ban from the X platform in Brazil,
01:14and also led to the coup investigation,
01:17and Moraes presided over Jair Bolsonaro's imprisonment.
01:20So he's been a major enemy, not just of the Brazilian far-right,
01:24but of the international far-right for about seven years now.
01:28And, in fact, his name was cited as one of the reasons that the Trump administration
01:33implemented sanctions on Brazil last year,
01:36and they also personally sanctioned Moraes.
01:38So all of the weight of the international far-right propaganda machine
01:42kicked into action after these accusations were made against Moraes.
01:47The next day, the attorney general's office announced that
01:53Mendoza had conducted the investigation secretly.
01:56He hadn't followed protocol.
01:58He's not a federal police director.
02:00He'd personally ordered two federal police officers
02:02to conduct a private investigation for him,
02:05and that it was a violation of protocol and should be thrown out.
02:09Meanwhile, Alexandre de Moraes filed a countersuit
02:13and a counter-request for investigation against Mendoza,
02:16accusing him of selective leaks to damage the Lula administration
02:21and booster the candidacy of his preferred candidate, Flavio Bolsonaro.
02:26So basically, today, the court met to decide
02:29whether they should combine the two complaints,
02:33the one that Mendoza made against Moraes
02:36and the one Moraes made against Mendoza.
02:38But as the vote hit 4 to 3,
02:41Flavio Dino asked for more time,
02:43and the session ended as is.
02:46So there's a lot that's going to keep going on,
02:49and regardless of whether they join the two cases or not,
02:51on the 23rd of September,
02:53Andrei Mendoza's accusations are going to be heard
02:56in the Supreme Court as well.
