Mothers and doctors have welcomed the Northern Territory government's announcement private maternity services could be re-established at the Darwin Private Hospital, with national not-for-profit operator Calvary Health Care set to take over. Health Minister Steve Edgington says he's "very confident" the service will be restored despite key issues casting doubt over how soon that could happen.

01:09And they say other hospitals urgently need more staff too.

01:21We believe the next step is really enshrining in the private hospital operating licence that maternity services must be offered.
