17:46If there's an early safety car, there's such an advantage to taking the safety car here.
17:53It's up to 15 seconds faster to pit under a safety car.
17:58And that would be a problem then for Leclerc, Russell, Piastri and Lawson all on that hard tyre.
18:03They want to keep that for a long time.
18:06Formation lap underway.
18:08Yeah, I was just going to add as well, Martin, that's a big split in strategy across the two Ferraris,
18:12isn't it?
18:12Hamilton on the soft, Leclerc on the hard tyre.
18:14That's been an interesting strategy discussion in that office.
18:18And is that a method of making sure that they limit the amount of time they're on the same bit
18:22of track with a different strategy progressing through the race?
18:25Some teams also said to me, Bernie, that the medium tyre is not actually a very good tyre.
18:30But the front row of the grid has got medium compound tyres.
18:33Yeah, so I think with that medium tyre, if you have a lap one safety car, a lap one instant,
18:38then you're quickly on to a hard tyre from that point.
18:41And then you might do two sets of hards through this race.
18:44That's what most of the field has, apart from the Audi and Lawson.
18:49It's a street circuit, and we often get safety cars, we often get red flags at street circuits, too.
18:54The last two Grand Prix have seen a red flag.
18:57In the opening three laps, we had the Verstappen crash at Zandvoort, Leclerc's crash at the Parabolica at Monza.
19:03But if there is a crash here, well, will the race director throw a safety car?
19:08Will he throw a red flag?
19:09He's been very quick to throw red flags this weekend, Martin.
19:11The problem here is a temporary racetrack doesn't have the full perimeter roads inside and outside, like more established racetracks.
19:17It doesn't have any cranes to just lift cars out of the way, as we see in Monaco and Zandvoort,
19:23for example.
19:24So that involves putting JCPs onto the racetrack to clear them away.
19:30And, of course, we know exactly what that means, either full safety car or, more likely, a red flag.
19:35And if somebody goes off in this Turn 12 here, goodness knows it's a half a kilometer long.
19:39Goodness knows how they're going to get them off there.
19:41But, you know, I think the drivers, once they settle down in the first few laps, know they've got to
19:47get in to a bit of management, a bit of survival for the next few laps.
19:52McLaren aren't convinced that they've got the best race pace behind them.
19:56Mercedes probably feel that they have.
19:58Red Bull's race pace isn't too shabby, either, and neither is Ferrari's.
20:01This could be one of those, if it is a difficult track to overtake, very close races, Martin, where people
20:07are having to be patient and stuck behind a slower-moving car out in front.
20:11Yes, because, again, from the junior racing, we've seen when they have tried to overtake in other parts of the
20:16racetrack, it's often fraught with peril and contact.
20:20So there's the championship as it stands.
20:2266 points, a season high, the lead for Kimi Antonelli, he's on the front row alongside Lando Norris, who, of
20:29course, has won two of the last three Grand Prix that we've had.
20:33Previous winners in Madrid, you go back to James Hunt in 76, Jacques Lafitte in 1981, Williams running a tribute
20:41livery, predominantly white this weekend, in honour of that livery they had in Harama, back in 81 for that Spanish
20:48Grand Prix.
20:49And there, working feverishly to get some heat into his tyres, is Liam Lawson, track temperature 54 degrees, it is
20:56roasting hot here in Madrid this afternoon.
21:00And as we say, a voyage into the unknown.
21:02If you've got clean air, then that should help your graining, and that is what Lando Norris is going to
21:07be hoping he's got out of turn two.
21:09Yeah, just easing towards that yellow line there and any other reference points he's created on the wall and on
21:14his car to make sure he's as far forward in that grid box as possible.
21:18So a little 10, 20-degree turn to the left to go and try and cover off Antonelli, who will
21:24have the inside line, as I said, into the first chicane.
21:28And the tail end then lining up towards the back of the grid.
21:33See how narrow it is?
21:34It's very narrow indeed, and it's almost a right angle into that first corner as well.
21:40The distance down to turn one, 165 metres from pole to the first braking zone, 280 metres down to the
21:48apex of turn one.
21:49And we've got 21 cars now slotted into their grid positions.
21:53And the all-new Spanish Grand Prix here at the Madring is ready for the off.
22:00We look towards the lights.
22:02Here they come, 57 laps here in the Spanish capital.
22:07It's lights out and away we go.
22:09Good reaction from Lando Norris.
22:11Moves across to cut off Kimi Antonelli.
22:13Lewis Hamilton already up into third, trying to put pressure on the pole sitter.
22:16And wide goes Kimi Antonelli.
22:19Wide goes Max Verstappen.
22:21Lando Norris behind Antonelli, who must surely give that place back, and has.
22:25He wants to give it back straight away.
22:26It's his only chance to defend against Max Verstappen.
22:29And Verstappen is coming at Kimi Antonelli.
22:31Hamilton now down in fourth.
22:33There's Charles Leclerc, George Russell once again.
22:36Kimi Antonelli runs wide.
22:37Two corners that he's run wide at in the first five.
22:40He's desperately trying to let Norris through without letting Verstappen through.
22:44But he's already got two track limits against him.
22:46And Max Verstappen is through.
22:48So it's all gone a little bit wrong for Kimi Antonelli at the start.
22:51As Verstappen takes that second place.
22:54Lando Norris continues now to lead.
22:56Soft tyres on Verstappen's car.
22:58We know how good he is in the early stages of a Grand Prix.
23:01How aggressive he can be now.
23:03Will he be able to do anything about Lando Norris?
23:06Through L'Amonia mental.
23:07And we go and on to turn 13.
23:09And a lovely sweeping section of the track coming.
23:13Norris leads for Antonelli.
23:14And then from Verstappen, then Antonelli.
23:16Then Hamilton, Leclerc.
23:18Lewis Hamilton saying Max has got to give the position back.
23:20As he too did run wide.
23:23But so far, Max, well, if he does give a position back, he's got to give two back.
23:27If he gained one on Lewis Hamilton.
23:29We'll have a look at that on the replay in a moment.
23:31Yeah, so everybody seems to be unscathed through there.
23:34They know that to finish first, first you must finish.
23:38And Lando then showing some tremendous pace on this second lap.
23:41Oscar Piastri might have damage on his car.
23:44He's dropped down into about 11th place.
23:46Running behind Esteban Ocon, who started well from 13th and is running in the top 10.
23:50Then Franco Colopinto is up into 7th place as we end the first lap.
23:55And Lando Norris has a gap of 1.3 seconds between himself and Max Verstappen.
24:01Then Antonelli.
24:02Then Hamilton.
24:03Leclerc and Russell.
24:04Colopinto, as I mentioned, up into 7th.
24:06Lawson Lindblad, Piastri has got past Esteban Ocon and back into the top 10.
24:10So Max then explaining himself to the stewards already, like, I had to avoid contact with Lewis.
24:16So he knows somebody is looking at something on that first lap.
24:20Not sure we saw it, but I'm sure we will in due course.
24:25But Antonelli then needs, with his championship position, just needs to stay calm.
24:29Does not want to be charging off the racetrack and getting himself track limit violations.
24:35Oscar Piastri made contact with George Russell not once, but twice on the opening lap,
24:40which is why he's a bit concerned about any damage and any contact there.
24:45Look how the clean air that Lando Norris is driving into is really helping him in these opening stages
24:51as he's eking out more of an advantage out in the lead.
24:54There's his teammate Oscar Piastri behind Armin Lindblad.
24:58He did well to get into the top 10 yesterday.
25:00His car wasn't really set up properly, but has had pace all weekend.
25:04Hamilton's saying, check the rear.
25:06I think I've hit the wall.
25:07That might not be the last time we hear a message like that from a driver this afternoon.
25:11And this is very much like Monaco.
25:13You've got to get your position.
25:15Your track position is key in these early phases
25:18because you've got to do some management with full tanks of fuel.
25:21And it's the turn 12, the long turn 12, that's opening up and graining the front left tyre.
25:28And they need to sort that out as well.
25:30Norris absolutely flying out front.
25:32George Russell getting a bit closer to Charles Leclerc, as you can see,
25:36in the battle for fifth place.
25:39Active aero down one and two straights on this track, but there's not many straights at all.
25:44A lot of corners, and you can see the damage.
25:46The front left of the McLaren and the wishbones,
25:50and I think it's some of it, might have let loose a little bit.
25:53There's debris on the track there from Oscar Piastri that you can see.
25:57Oh, the front wing end plate on the left-hand side's gone as well.
26:00And Hamilton's saying rear left tyre looks good.
26:03So he's been looking in his mirrors to check that out.
26:05Currently in fourth place.
26:07Those who started on the hard tyre will be very happy indeed
26:10that we haven't had a safety car in these opening stages.
26:13If you're on the soft tyre in your Max Verstappen,
26:15you'll be very happy that you've gained the place and you're up in the second.
26:19Yeah, and of course those starting on the hard compound tyre
26:21will be pleased there's not been a first or second lap safety car as well.
26:25So they can hopefully get their heads down
26:28and use that durability for some time now.
26:32And it will play into their hands a little bit later on.
26:35Skyrace Control, Bernie Collins.
26:37Yeah, just a bit of information.
26:39Verstappen cut turn one as well as we've seen Kimi Antonelli do it there.
26:43So that's why he's complaining about Hamilton.
26:45He thinks that he pushed him and therefore he had to cut the corner
26:47and didn't come back on in the right place.
26:49And then the second thing, there's already been a lot of discussion
26:52on Norris's car about strategy.
26:54They are saying they're looking to extend.
26:56The tyres look good.
27:02Max, we think we should give the position back to Hamilton.
27:06So that will mean letting Antonelli through as well.
27:10That's not going to go down well, is it?
27:12No, not at all.
27:13He's been noted as well for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.
27:16Yeah, so he'll be missed with that because I've seen Antonelli.
27:21If Antonelli gets away with it because not only do you,
27:24it's not necessarily whether you pass somebody,
27:26it's whether you fail to be passed as well is what's considered
27:30a lasting advantage.
27:32And that's what Max looked like he was thinking of doing.
27:36There, but he's got it.
27:38So basically...
27:39Oh, Hamilton's gone off the track.
27:41What are you guys thinking about?
27:43He could have shot it into me.
27:44Like, what are you guys thinking about?
27:46If I just stay on the track, we're out of the race.
27:49So Verstappen giving his side of the story there.
27:52We'll see a replay in a moment.
27:53I think Kimi Antonelli, though, has given the place back
27:56not once but twice to Lando Norris.
27:59So what's happening there is the race control
28:02have got hold of the Red Bull.
28:04Pitlane has said, look, either you do it or we'll sort it out.
28:09And he has done it.
28:10He's let Antonelli past.
28:11He's let Hamilton past.
28:12He's stayed ahead of Charles Leclerc.
28:14But he's immediately under pressure now
28:15from Charles Leclerc and Verstappen.
28:18Following team orders goes from second down into fourth.
28:23I'm sure that is something that's going to be talked about
28:25very much after the race.
28:27I think I'm having a brake failure.
28:29Pedals going long, says Lewis Hamilton,
28:31who we did see going off the track on the previous lap.
28:35Pedal going long.
28:36That's a horrible feeling.
28:37Left foot braking, of course, in these cars.
28:39There's only two pedals that go in the stop, basically.
28:43And normally the pedal is absolutely rock solid.
28:48And if you feel even the tiny, a few millimeters
28:51for a Formula One driver, a single-seater driver,
28:53just feels like an enormous amount of travel.
28:55Had a chance to come into the pits, Lewis Hamilton,
28:57if there was a big problem.
28:58But they decided against that.
29:01The stewards have said no further action on Max Verstappen.
29:03Now he's given those two places back.
29:06But he does seem to be going a little bit slowly,
29:10does Lewis Hamilton.
29:11And he's going to be under pressure here from Max Verstappen.
29:14And that is an easy pass from Verstappen.
29:16Hamilton now picks up the toe.
29:17That looked like deployment problems as well for Lewis Hamilton.
29:21The ease of which Verstappen breezed fast.
29:24Yeah, Max almost had to duck out of the way, didn't he, there?
29:26He was catching him so fast.
29:28So whether Lewis has got power unit problems as well,
29:31or if it's just brakes,
29:32if it's brakes, he'll not be long before he's in the pits,
29:36particularly on this racetrack.
29:38One in Spain, didn't he?
29:39Back in June, Lewis Hamilton,
29:40the Catalonia Grand Prix in Barcelona,
29:42but having all manner of issues in the opening five laps
29:46here in Madrid through La Monia Mantal we go.
29:50Seven braking zones on this track.
29:53If you've got a problem with the brakes,
29:54you know, it is not a track to have that on by any stretch.
29:58Charles Leclerc is going to pass Lewis Hamilton here and does.
30:01And that looked like Lewis just keeping out of the way.
30:04Now George Russell, his former teammate,
30:06is all over his gearbox.
30:07And Hamilton is just dropping down the field,
30:10corner by corner.
30:11Breaking very early indeed.
30:13And so, yeah, he just got out of his teammate's way.
30:18Doesn't feel the need at the moment to do that for George Russell.
30:22But Lewis really struggling to slow that Ferrari down.
30:25He's locked up as well now.
30:27Which is not what you want to see at all.
30:29We've got a yellow flag flying in the final bit
30:33as Lewis goes off.
30:34There he is.
30:35And he's now down behind Oscar Piastri in 10th.
30:39Must surely come into the pits.
30:41No, he's going to carry on.
30:43He doesn't.
30:44And is that a flat spot on his tyres as well
30:46through locking up on those soft tyres?
30:48No surprise given all the blue smoke that we saw.
30:50But he's really struggling to slow that car down.
30:55I can't imagine what's going to sort itself out, to be honest.
31:01I don't have brakes, guys.
31:04And you can tell, Ted Kravitz from the pit lane.
31:07Can you see the Ferrari pit wall?
31:08Yeah, now the mechanics come out to receive the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton.
31:12They've had brake overheating in the past.
31:15Maybe they just thought, look, if you try and cool them down, Lewis,
31:17maybe lift and coast quite a lot, try to get the temperatures under control,
31:21maybe they'll come back.
31:22But it doesn't look like they can.
31:24So it looks like he's coming in to retire.
31:26Oh, that is such cruel luck for Lewis Hamilton.
31:30As I say, winner in Barcelona.
31:33And looking, odds on certainty here, to be the first retiree here in Madrid.
31:38Out in front, meanwhile, Lando Norris now three seconds clear of Kimi Antonelli,
31:43who's just gone wide.
31:45In the background, I think you could just see the Mercedes car going wide
31:49and losing roundabout a second in doing so.
31:52That gap opening up even more.
31:55Antonelli having trouble stopping.
31:57I can barely stop the car, says Lewis.
32:00Don't stop on track, say the team.
32:03You know why.
32:03Yeah, they don't want a safety car, do they?
32:05For the other car.
32:06Yeah.
32:06They don't want a safety car for Leclerc.
32:08It's the last thing they want on those hard compound tyres.
32:11Do not stop on track.
32:12You'll compromise the other car.
32:14And Lewis Hamilton making his way through turn 17 at the moment.
32:17He is second last.
32:19Former teammate Valtteri Bottas behind him in the Cadillac.
32:23And Valtteri Bottas overtakes Hamilton.
32:25Make that now last.
32:26That is a wretched, wretched start.
32:28And of course, then he starts getting blasted.
32:30Before early on in the year, wasn't it?
32:31Where you get Black White for track limits.
32:34When he can't slow down.
32:35We actually saw it Silverstone, didn't we?
32:37Yeah, we did with Kimi Antonelli.
32:38Kimi Antonelli.
32:39Which just seems like a bit unfair, doesn't it?
32:42But he, you know, I guess he was off the track.
32:45But he couldn't slow down.
32:46No, quite.
32:47Before this race, Lewis Hamilton was the only driver to have completed every lap in sprint racing and Grand Prix
32:54in 2026.
32:56He has finished in the points in every race in 2026.
33:00And he's into the pits, I'm afraid, I think, to retire from this Spanish Grand Prix.
33:06You pointed out Antonelli had a horrible lap on the previous lap.
33:09And he's got a track limit has Antonelli now as well.
33:16So he's been wide at Turn 17, Bernie.
33:20Yeah, I was just going to pick up on Antonelli.
33:21Anyone that's watching from home on is on board.
33:23That front left medium tyre does not look very good on Kimi Antonelli.
33:28You can see a dark stripe around the front left greening on that tyre.
33:32So here's the start then.
33:33Lando Norris moves over to the left-hand side.
33:35They thought that one out well at McLaren.
33:38Hamilton down the inside.
33:40Did Max get pushed off in the way that he was claiming?
33:44No, I can see why.
33:47I think he should have given that back.
33:48I can see why race control have said to the team,
33:51hey, sort it out.
33:52Otherwise, we'll sort it out for you.
33:55So Antonelli then breaks too late for that chicane.
33:59Gains a humongous amount of time.
34:01He hasn't actually been noted for track limits there.
34:05But let's watch him.
34:07So he's going to stay on the brakes really late.
34:10Lando trying to make the corner.
34:13Lewis was in control.
34:15Max thought he was out of control.
34:16But Lewis was in control.
34:18I think Max should have given that back straight away.
34:19Would have been probably the better thing to do.
34:22Watch George Russell cut across here.
34:24That's the contact made not once but twice with Oscar Piastri.
34:28He locks up and it pretty much destroys that front left end plate on his front wing.
34:34Yeah, not a lot Oscar could have done about that, is there really?
34:37I mean, he had to go down the outside.
34:38He had to go through the gap.
34:40And you can't slow down.
34:41You'll suddenly run into the back of you.
34:43On board now with Carlos Sainz,
34:45who was briefly under investigation for a collision with Yuki Tsunoda.
34:49The stewards have decided no further action.
34:51There is Tsunoda on the right-hand side.
34:54And there's your contact.
34:55Sainz kind of had to move into the middle a little bit.
34:58But stewards have said that's a racing incident.
35:01But now that's the first lap lens, isn't it?
35:03Because actually Carlos lost control of his car there.
35:06If that had been during, on a normal lap in the Grand Prix,
35:10they would have been taking that one further.
35:14So that is the start of the race covered.
35:18We are almost into the pit window for those who want to stop on the soft compound tyre.
35:23But the thing here, Martin, is you've got to keep your tyres going long enough to stop
35:29and come out into some clean air because you do not want to be pitting
35:32coming out behind someone on the hard tyres because you're going to lose a heap of time.
35:36You are.
35:36But they're basically doing such good times out front, Antonelli.
35:40Well, Norris and Antonelli, I should say.
35:42Verstappen, too.
35:43They're all in the one-minute 39s.
35:45And Norris has just done the fastest lap of the Grand Prix as well.
35:48So he can really pace himself nicely out front there.
35:52But Antonelli's more than far enough behind him
35:55not to get compromised by the hot, dirty air coming his way as well.
35:59Lap 9 of 57 then.
36:02And Lando Norris out in front by about 4.5 seconds,
36:06which will be a delight to the McLaren pit bulls.
36:08They're going to go long on these medium compound tyres.
36:12Coming into this race, Martin, we had a briefing.
36:15They didn't expect to have a brilliant race pace
36:18because, well, they had no data with Lando Norris for a start
36:21because he missed the second practice session.
36:24Yeah, I think they're all finding out a lot of things lap by lap,
36:27sometimes corner by corner.
36:30But this is the settle-down phase that we were expecting.
36:34But, of course, if there's a gap appears,
36:38and I know Bernie will be all over that,
36:40and it looks like the gap will be to Colin Pinto,
36:44who's currently 23 seconds off the leader.
36:49If a gap appears in there and Mercedes decide to pit Antonelli,
36:53I think with fresh tyres, McLaren would have to react pretty quickly,
36:58but track position is everything.
37:01So that's what we're looking for next.
37:02Yeah, they can react the next lap and still get out ahead,
37:06given a, you know, a two, two and a half second pit stop.
37:10It should be an undercut race.
37:12Your tyres start to go off.
37:14So get on to the fresher rubber.
37:16If Leclerc isn't going to pick up the page,
37:18we would need to consider an undercut.
37:19Find the medium.
37:21Think it will be robust.
37:23Copy.
37:23You see George going through the strategy options now.
37:25Go on to the fresher rubber,
37:26bang in a quick out lap,
37:28and then by the time your opponent manages to react,
37:32then in a bit of luck,
37:34with a bit of luck,
37:34you should be ahead of them on the track.
37:37Piastri's been noted for a yellow flag infringement
37:40around about seven minutes ago.
37:43We'll let you know if that goes to the stewards or not.
37:45So the only yellow flag we've had
37:47would be for Lewis going off the track
37:49with his brake issues.
37:51I mean, Lewis with a lot of laps deleted for track limits
37:55as there goes Liam Lawson on Franco Collar.
37:58Pinto and just manages to stay on the track
38:00and down at turn five.
38:02Collar Pinto might be able to fight this one back,
38:04but no, Lawson's got that under control.
38:06And we've seen drivers in the past
38:09get hit with time penalties for the next race.
38:14They're not going to ping Lise Hamilton, surely.
38:16Nothing you can do to stay on the track at times.
38:18I wouldn't have thought so,
38:19but sometimes, yeah,
38:20you do want to go and serve that penalty
38:23if you've got a penalty before you retire.
38:26But that's key for me in this race,
38:28Lawson getting through there,
38:30because if he's got pace in that Red Bull,
38:33he can go and close the pit stop window
38:35for some of the front runners
38:37if he can really start flying there now
38:39that he's cleared.
38:41Collar Pinto was sort of the cork in the bottle,
38:42wasn't he, for the midfield?
38:44Standing in for Isaac Hadjar for the third race running,
38:47Liam Lawson still seeking his first podium
38:49in Formula One six years ago today
38:50at Mugello.
38:52Alex Albon got his first podium,
38:54driving four at Red Bull
38:55six years ago on this very day.
38:58The gap out in front, though,
38:59between leader and second,
39:01has grown now to five and a half seconds.
39:04Antonelli struggling on these medium tyres.
39:07Another five seconds back to Max Verstappen.
39:10And lap by lap,
39:11Lando Norris is about half a second quicker
39:13than Antonelli, Verstappen, Leclerc and Russell.
39:17And there's a gap to Lawson on those hard tyres.
39:19He wants to build himself a safety car window,
39:22doesn't he?
39:22Which, depending on which team you talk to,
39:24is somewhere between 10 seconds and 15 seconds
39:27it takes to make a pit stop under the safety car.
39:31But at the moment,
39:32Norris and McLaren are holding all the cards.
39:36We haven't heard much about Max Verstappen
39:38and his tyres,
39:39but I think he might have picked up
39:41a bit of graining on his front-left tyre.
39:43And it's the front-left and the rear-left
39:46that get the punishment here
39:47through that La Monumental corner,
39:50the 270-degree banged right-hander.
39:53Piastri now right on the tail
39:55of Arvid Limblad in the Racing Bulls.
39:57I'm going to assume McLaren
39:59have explained to the FIA
40:00that the integrity of that piece
40:02that's flapping around on the front
40:04of Oscar Piastri's car
40:05is substantial.
40:07To use George Russell's word,
40:09robust.
40:09Robust, yes.
40:10Here comes Piastri on Limblad
40:13and watching that battle.
40:14And the all-Spanish scrap
40:16for 17th,
40:17Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso.
40:2022 Spanish Grand Prix's for Alonso,
40:2312 for Carlos Sainz.
40:25So what's that?
40:2534 between them
40:26and putting on a show for the fans,
40:2845,000 of which
40:29around the outside
40:30of that La Monumental corner.
40:32Ted Kravitz, down to you.
40:34I'm glad we got a chance
40:35to look at Oscar Piastri
40:36and see how much
40:37he's missing
40:38from that front wing end plate
40:40after hitting George Russell
40:41twice early on,
40:43didn't he, Crofty?
40:44So we'll see whether that McLaren
40:45needs a front end plate.
40:47The other McLaren
40:47going absolutely beautifully.
40:50Lando Norris
40:50pulling time away from Kimi Antonelli
40:53who continues to struggle
40:54with his tyres.
40:55It was 6 tenths of a second
40:57last time round.
40:58Couple of tenths of a second
40:59this time round,
41:00Norris quicker than Antonelli.
41:02Lando doing a brilliant job
41:04just looking after his tyres
41:06in this opening phase.
41:07It's a little bit harsh on Piastri
41:09saying he hit Russell twice.
41:11He was sort of minding his own business
41:12up against the pit wall, wasn't he?
41:14when the Mercedes came his way.
41:16Not exactly anywhere to go
41:18to his right-hand side.
41:19This is the battle for 8th place
41:20and Arvid Lindblad
41:21has also been noted
41:22for a yellow flag infringement
41:24as you can see there.
41:25So the guy in 8th
41:26and the guy in 9th
41:27noted by race control
41:28but as yet the stewards
41:29not looking at that.
41:31On board with Piastri
41:32he's got pace
41:33to get past Lindblad here
41:35but where does he pick his moment?
41:38Where is the opportunity?
41:41Lando Norris being told
41:43Antonelli's tyres
41:43are in a worse condition than yours.
41:46He wouldn't know that
41:47he can't see Antonelli
41:48at the moment
41:49in his wing mirrors.
41:50Gap growing to 6.3 seconds
41:52through Le Monumental
41:54track drops down
41:55and then will start to rise
41:56slightly again.
41:58Where can Piastri pick a spot
42:00to try and force his way
42:02down the inside?
42:03Problem is that
42:04because the track swings
42:06from one side of the track
42:08to the racing line
42:09it's not really anywhere obvious
42:11except for the pit straight
42:14but you've got to be so good
42:15off the final corner
42:16to put everybody's going
42:17to have enough battery power
42:18down the pit straight
42:19and they can make sure they will
42:20to defend
42:22so that just leaves
42:25lunges
42:25as your only option
42:27and it's too early
42:28in the race
42:28for a lunge.
42:29Is there a lunge maybe
42:30from Fernando Alonso?
42:32He's good at lunges isn't he?
42:33He's trying you know
42:34he's trying
42:35oh he's made contact
42:36and there's damage
42:37Carlos Sainz goes off
42:38as a result of it
42:40and there's your damage
42:41on Alonso's car.
42:42He squeezed me to the wall man
42:43the start
42:44he crashed into two people
42:45now squeeze me to the wall
42:47on braking
42:47Was Fernando far enough
42:50alongside
42:50to have the right
42:52to a bit more room?
42:53Yes I think he was
42:54but it's
42:55the two Spanish drivers
42:57who've had a difficult weekend
42:59running into each other
43:02for Carlos Junior
43:04as I know him
43:05growing up
43:06Fernando was his absolute hero
43:08Yeah he was
43:09and there's Fernando
43:10having to
43:12complain
43:12but yeah
43:13he did
43:13Carlos
43:14did somewhat
43:15get his elbows out
43:16in the first corner
43:16as we saw
43:17Almost thought for a second
43:19there was another lunge
43:20coming up from
43:21Oscar Piastri
43:22he too has got damage
43:23to the left hand side
43:24of his front wing
43:25stewards have decided
43:26Oscar Piastri and Arvid Lindblad
43:27can fight this one out
43:28without fear of a penalty
43:30no further action
43:31for any yellow flag infringement
43:33so Bernie to you
43:34Yeah so I just wanted to
43:35come in a little bit
43:36on strategy
43:36so Norris has been told
43:38target plus 10
43:40so that strikes me
43:41that McLaren are definitely
43:42thinking of the ones
43:43stop strategy
43:44with a plus 10 number
43:46on that medium tyre
43:47they say their tyre
43:48looks good
43:48relative to Kimi Antonelli
43:50George Russell
43:51as we see on screen now
43:52had as Martin pointed out
43:53been pushing to try
43:54and undercut Charles Leclerc
43:56the pit window looks good
43:57he come out ahead
43:58of Colopinto
43:59so only lose position
44:00to Lawson
44:01the difficulty is
44:03with only lap 14
44:04it's too early I think
44:06unless they want to
44:07commit to a two stop
44:08on Russell
44:09and that's what's
44:10preventing Mercedes
44:12trying that undercut
44:13and Lawson
44:14if you do come out
44:15behind him
44:15on that hard tyre
44:16Martin could be a real
44:17cork in the bottle
44:18and could actually be
44:20a proper wingman
44:21for Max Verstappen
44:22if Antonelli
44:23gets behind him
44:24for a pure pace overtake
44:27you need to be at least
44:28two seconds faster
44:29than the driver in front
44:31new fresh set of boots
44:33that might be alright
44:34but as Bernie points out
44:36it's too early
44:37to ditch those hard compound tyres
44:39might be a bit of pace management
44:41also might be a bit of Antonelli
44:43driving through
44:44the graining phase
44:45got a yellow
44:46we have got a yellow
44:48we've got Piastri
44:49behind Lindblad still
44:50and having to make
44:52a bit of a move
44:53but at turn 20
44:54Lance Stroll
44:55has come to a standstill
44:57now
44:58that won't affect
44:59these next few corners
45:01as we go through
45:03towards La Chicane
45:05and Le Monumentale
45:06but the race leader
45:06Lando Norris
45:07is now coming up
45:08to where Lance Stroll
45:09has stopped
45:10so if there's going to be
45:12a safety car
45:13Norris is just about
45:14to come up
45:15to the pit entry
45:16now passing the pit entry
45:18where is Stroll
45:19we haven't seen it
45:20we need to know
45:21but oh
45:22it's a virtual safety car
45:24Norris has missed it
45:24has Antonelli got it
45:26Antonelli's into the pits
45:27oh Lando just missed it
45:30oh and there's Lance Stroll
45:31that's the
45:31that's the problem
45:32with the Aston Martin
45:33and into the barriers
45:34I hope he's okay
45:35Lando Norris
45:37is going to have to
45:38continue rounds
45:39for at least a lap here
45:41under the virtual safety car
45:43while his rivals
45:44get a chance to pit
45:45Antonelli
45:46just before that
45:47was starting to close
45:48the gap a little bit
45:49maybe it's driven
45:49through that graining phase
45:50but no brainer this Martin
45:52under a virtual safety car
45:54for people to come
45:55into the pits
45:56if they can
45:57Lando was literally
45:58just past the pit entry
46:00when the BSC
46:01virtual safety car
46:02came up
46:03and that allowed
46:04Antonelli to slip in there
46:06so it couldn't have been
46:07I was talking about them
46:08having all the ace cards
46:09in their hands
46:10suddenly
46:10they've had to lay them
46:12on the table
46:13because that is a
46:15blow for McLaren
46:17but who else stayed out
46:18so Leclerc
46:19Leclerc did
46:19Leclerc stayed out
46:21Russell came in
46:23Lawson stayed out
46:24so there's not really
46:26many cars
46:26between Antonelli
46:28and Norris
46:28so those on the hard tyre
46:30would have stayed out
46:31as Bernie was saying
46:32it was a bit too early
46:33there's the lock up
46:34from Lance Stroll
46:35and he tried to
46:36spin the car round
46:38and gets himself
46:39into a bit of a cul-de-sac
46:41maybe that's how
46:42he's ended up
46:43in the barriers
46:43now McLaren
46:45would have seen
46:46on the on-board channel
46:47they would have seen
46:49that car against the barriers
46:50should they just have
46:51brought Norris in anyway
46:52expecting a virtual safety car
46:54probably
46:55but they might still
46:56be able to get him in
46:57under a virtual safety car
46:58if they keep that out
47:00long enough
47:01well they're trying to
47:01yeah
47:02they're trying to
47:0326 seconds
47:04for a normal pit stop
47:05down to
47:06as Martin said
47:07between 10 and 15 seconds
47:09that you lose
47:09on your race time
47:10for a stop
47:11under a safety car
47:13or a virtual safety car
47:14so because it's taking
47:15so long to clear cars
47:16away here
47:17they might
47:18might might
47:19he's through 19 now
47:21they might be able
47:22to get him
47:23in the pits
47:24and
47:25here's the ending
47:26oh no
47:26it's going to be a green
47:27it's going to be a green
47:28pit stop for him
47:29so what do they do here
47:30Fernando Alonso
47:32changing his front wing
47:33Lando Norris
47:34at 40% of his racing speed
47:36has had to go
47:37and do another lap
47:38behind the virtual safety car
47:41and now
47:41he comes into the pits
47:43so as he makes his way
47:44down the pit lane
47:4680 kilometers an hour
47:47Leclerc in second
47:48and Antonelli
47:49who's pitted in third
47:50making their way
47:51towards the final corner
47:53they've got to get a move
47:54on with those tires
47:55and it's a
47:56it's a delay
47:57in the front right
47:58for Lando Norris
47:59so another problem
48:00and a slow pit stop
48:02seven seconds
48:03now
48:03his only
48:04upside here
48:06is that the pit lane
48:07feeds out
48:07into turn three
48:09so he misses out
48:09a few corners
48:10he's going to end up
48:11behind Russell
48:11he has lost
48:12the lead
48:13of this race
48:14with some very bad timing
48:16and a slow pit stop
48:18and what was looking
48:19like a brilliant
48:20Spanish Sunday afternoon
48:21for Lando Norris
48:22has gone from great
48:24to pretty bleak
48:26in the work
48:27of two or three laps
48:28out he comes
48:29behind George Russell
48:32and that is
48:33cruel
48:33cruel luck
48:34yeah
48:35it couldn't have been
48:36worse for him
48:38this at the end
48:39negative
48:42wow
48:43so Mercedes
48:44don't think
48:44that the hard tire
48:45will go
48:46the medium tire
48:47will go to the end
48:48of the race
48:49George Russell
48:50on the medium tire
48:51started on the hard
48:53Lando Norris
48:54I'm sure
48:54will be thinking
48:55right to the end
48:56of the race here
48:57and wouldn't mind
48:58wouldn't mind
48:59a little virtual safety car
49:00or a proper safety car
49:01to close the field
49:02down a bit again
49:03but we
49:04will see what happens
49:05yet to pit
49:06our race leader
49:07Charles Leclerc
49:08Kimi Antonelli
49:09who's been
49:11you know
49:11had a bit of bad luck
49:12and some good luck
49:14when it comes to
49:15the timing of safety cars
49:16this season
49:17will find himself
49:18in the lead of this race
49:19very shortly
49:20on a hard set of tyres
49:21that Mercedes
49:21will be hoping
49:22can go to the end
49:23of this race
49:24well that's turned it
49:25all on its head
49:25hasn't it
49:26hasn't it just
49:26I mean literally
49:27I bet most of
49:28most of Lando's
49:30next lap
49:30was VSC speed
49:32yep
49:33it was only the last
49:34couple of corners
49:34where it was green flag
49:35so it should
49:37yeah it's hurt him
49:38and then of course
49:39the seven seconder
49:40and that's
49:41that's what's put him
49:42completely out of position
49:43he might have got ahead
49:44of George Russell
49:45if it had been
49:46a two second stop
49:48potentially
49:49so unlucky
49:51the question is
49:52should they have
49:53anticipated
49:55the VSC
49:56we were talking about it
49:57yeah
49:58I've got to say
49:59let's go to the person
50:01who used to be on a pit bull
50:02and with a called strategy
50:04Bernie Collins
50:05when you see a car
50:06in the barriers
50:07at a street circuit
50:08is it fair to assume
50:10Bernie
50:10there's a virtual safety car
50:11at least
50:12coming soon
50:13well
50:13when I was watching
50:14the Crofty
50:15when I seen
50:15Stroh stop on track
50:16I went instantly
50:17to his on board
50:18when I seen his on board
50:19it looked like
50:20he pulled in
50:21two seconds Bernie
50:23why wouldn't we try
50:24mate
50:25so it's target
50:26target minus 10
50:27on the plan A
50:29but I think
50:29the clerk will make
50:30this to the end
50:31easy
50:31with a one stop
50:32so just keep
50:34the management up
50:35do what he did
50:36on that hard tyre
50:37that's Marcus Dudley
50:38his race engineer
50:39Bernie
50:39yeah so
50:40like we heard
50:41George is pushing
50:42for the one stop
50:42but he's on the medium tyre
50:44now
50:44Leclerc on the hard
50:45that he's been on
50:46from the start
50:46so Leclerc's strategy
50:47more optimum
50:48to try and make
50:49that one stop work
50:50yeah I think
50:50for McLaren's side
50:51when you looked
50:52at Stroh's on board
50:53and I've not seen
50:54the barrier incident
50:55that you mentioned
50:56because it was
50:56going through loads
50:57of other things
50:57it looked like
50:58he just pulled in
50:59off track
50:59it looked like
51:00he was in a place
51:00that they could
51:01easily recover the car
51:02and I think
51:03that's why
51:03McLaren decided
51:04it wasn't going
51:04to be a safety car
51:05and you don't want
51:06to ever preempt it
51:07just in case
51:08it does go
51:08immediately red
51:09or something like that
51:10then whenever
51:11the VSC was ending
51:13they did have
51:13a conversation
51:14on the radio
51:15about if the VSC
51:16was ending
51:17if they should
51:18pit or not
51:19and he was told
51:20whatever happens
51:21with the VSC
51:21do the pit stop
51:23so McLaren did
51:24know the VSC
51:25was ending
51:25and still decided
51:26to box Norris
51:27time will tell
51:28if that is the right
51:29decision or not
51:32thanks ever so much
51:33Bernie
51:34looked like he was
51:35in the barriers
51:36Lance Stroll there
51:37maybe
51:37the way the camera
51:39angle is
51:39the barrier
51:41kind of jumps out
51:41a bit
51:42and he actually
51:43wasn't
51:43we couldn't tell
51:44from a high shot
51:46unless he did
51:46another
51:47sort of tried to do
51:48another donut
51:48to get out of there
51:49and got it wrong
51:51perhaps he just
51:52nosed into
51:53the service road
51:55there
51:56but
51:56so
51:56here we go again
51:57Leclerc then
51:58obviously in the lead
51:59didn't stop
52:00Antonelli
52:00catching him
52:01reasonably quickly
52:03and
52:05and Verstappen
52:06then
52:07on his
52:08hard compound
52:08tyres
52:09looking quite good
52:10in third place
52:11there I would say
52:12and Russell
52:13saying
52:13let's go to the end
52:14let's go to the end
52:15on these mediums
52:17so
52:18Sainz and Alonso
52:19under investigation
52:20Carlos Sainz
52:21for that incident
52:21just make sure
52:23you stay on top
52:23of the management
52:24we don't want to
52:24open these tyres up
52:25they are bulletproof
52:26and in terms of
52:28management
52:28when Mercedes
52:29and Pete Bonington
52:30his race engineer
52:30talks about that
52:31it's particularly
52:33through turn 12
52:34Martin isn't it
52:34where cars are
52:35having to back off
52:36a bit
52:36yeah because it's
52:37open up means
52:38grading
52:39the surface
52:40rips
52:40basically
52:42and
52:42that's Bono
52:43just saying
52:44look you're on
52:44the hard compound tyres
52:45obviously
52:47you've really got
52:47two sets
52:48for the entire weekend
52:49and they haven't
52:50run those
52:50to the race
52:51so that's
52:51Jar's wisdom
52:52of
52:53don't think
52:54because you're
52:54on those
52:55lovely white marked tyres
52:56that they're bulletproof
52:58you've got to
52:59still manage them
53:00that was the message
53:00from his engineer
53:01yeah I think
53:02Mercedes
53:02in the practice sessions
53:04were backing off
53:05by about
53:06four tenths of a second
53:07through that corner
53:08just to keep the tyres
53:09in a decent shape
53:11Lando Norris
53:12by the way
53:13lost around about
53:1421-22 seconds
53:15in that virtual
53:17safety car period
53:18when he came in
53:20to pit
53:20as it ended
53:21and those behind him
53:23Antonelli and Verstappen
53:24and Russell
53:25took full advantage
53:26Charles Leclerc leads
53:27this race
53:28but the net leader
53:29is the one we're riding
53:30on board with now
53:30and that's
53:31Kimi Antonelli
53:32he's pitted
53:33he's pitted
53:33and Leclerc hasn't
53:34Bernie Collins has more
53:35for us at race control
53:36yeah I was just going to say
53:38for Kimi Antonelli
53:39now it's important
53:40he is net lead
53:41of this race
53:42like you say
53:43but he needs to make sure
53:44he doesn't ruin
53:45this tyres
53:46in the dirty air
53:47from Charles Leclerc
53:47so it's a bit of a
53:49waiting game
53:49I think for Kimi Antonelli
53:51the other thing
53:52I was just going to pick up
53:53on is the Mercedes cars
53:54they are giving
53:55Kimi Antonelli
53:55that information
53:56about the hard tyre
53:57based on Russell's
53:58first stint
53:59Russell starting
54:00on the hard tyre
54:00means that they have
54:01additional information
54:02on it
54:03they'd have brought that
54:04into the garage
54:04looked at that hard
54:05and then be telling
54:06Kimi how to control his
54:07the good news
54:09for Lando Norris
54:10if there is any good news
54:12to be had Martin
54:13is that he is
54:14lapping quicker
54:14than the car
54:15in front
54:16for
54:187 tenths
54:19on Max Verstappen
54:206 tenths
54:21on Kimi Antonelli
54:22and roundabout
54:239 tenths
54:24on Charles Leclerc
54:25on the last lap
54:26but he is
54:2716 seconds back
54:28and it isn't a track
54:29that's very easy
54:30to overtake
54:31yeah
54:31you're right
54:32I think
54:32even if it had
54:33a perfect pit stop
54:34it would still be
54:35nip and tuck
54:35with Russell
54:36wouldn't it
54:36to get out of the pit
54:37such was his loss
54:38when the virtual
54:39safety car ended
54:41it pretty much
54:42couldn't have been
54:43any worse
54:44for Lando Norris
54:45the timing of all of that
54:47so anyway
54:49as you say
54:50his pace
54:50is very
54:52very strong
54:53Lando
54:53so he'll be
54:54coming back up
54:55to George Russell
54:56but he'll not be
54:57breezing past
54:57George Russell
54:58certainly not
55:00Charles Leclerc
55:01leading then
55:02on the day
55:03that he's aiming
55:04for what would be
55:05podium number
55:0555
55:06for the Ferrari
55:08driver
55:09his last one
55:10at Spa
55:11this season
55:1255's a good number
55:13if you're a Ferrari
55:14driver
55:14but tie
55:15with Rubens
55:16Barrichello
55:16and Sebastian
55:17Fettel
55:17at second
55:18on their all-time
55:19podium list
55:20Michael Schumacher
55:21with 116
55:23with the most
55:24for a Ferrari
55:25driver
55:26there is our race
55:27leader
55:27his teammate
55:28Lewis Hamilton
55:28out of the race
55:29brake issues
55:30right from the start
55:32pedal went long
55:33couldn't brake
55:35and he had to
55:35retire
55:36round about
55:3713 laps ago
55:39yeah
55:39it's such a complex
55:41system
55:41it's not a quick
55:42fix in the pitch
55:43that one unfortunately
55:44for Lewis Hamilton
55:45you've got the
55:46brake by wire
55:47aspect
55:47you've then got
55:48the hydraulic
55:49system
55:49it's all
55:50behind the nose
55:51cone there
55:52and sadly
55:53for Lewis
55:54we've lost two
55:55cars now
55:56Lewis Hamilton
55:57and Lance Stroll
55:58that's right
55:59Lance Stroll
56:01with a lock-up
56:02and unable
56:03to spin the car
56:04round
56:04he did try
56:05and do a doughnut
56:06to get the car
56:06pointing the right
56:08direction again
56:08and just ran out
56:09of space
56:10five second time
56:11penalty
56:12for Carlos Sainz
56:13for that collision
56:14with Fernando
56:16Alonso
56:17Sainz down
56:17in 15th
56:18at the moment
56:19Alonso came in
56:20for a change
56:20of front wing
56:21is running last
56:22in this race
56:22fair cop
56:25second penalty
56:26they've given him
56:26at his home race
56:27this weekend
56:28yeah but
56:28it's just
56:30driver A
56:31driver B
56:31isn't it
56:32you can't
56:34the stewards
56:35can't
56:35consider that
56:36like
56:37oh it's the
56:38silverstone for
56:39Lewis and George
56:40and Lando
56:40will turn a blind
56:41eye to that
56:42it is what it is
56:44but
56:44I believe
56:47that Fernando
56:48Alonso
56:48as a set of time
56:49had
56:50the right to
56:51some space
56:51on the outside
56:52there
56:52and the stewards
56:53clearly think so too
56:54talking of 5 seconds
56:56Lando Norris
56:57missed the pit
56:58entry by 5 seconds
57:00so when the
57:01virtual safety car
57:02came out
57:02Lando was 5 seconds
57:04past it
57:04that was the margin
57:06between a perfectly
57:07timed pit stop
57:08and one that has
57:09costed the lead
57:10and sees him now
57:11down in 5th place
57:13Antonelli's trying to
57:14get within 1 second
57:15of Charles Leclerc
57:16here
57:17that will give him
57:18an extra half a
57:18megajoule of energy
57:20that he may be
57:20used for some
57:21overtaking
57:21or he's thinking
57:22to himself
57:23do you know what
57:23I've got a clear
57:24margin of about
57:257 seconds on
57:26Max Verstappen
57:27I might as well
57:27just stay where I am
57:28because Leclerc's
57:30going to pit eventually
57:31yeah he's right
57:32in his dirty air
57:33though he's now
57:34into the overtake
57:34zone as well
57:35but they also
57:36had to change
57:37the nose on
57:37Alonso's
57:38Aston Martin
57:39didn't they
57:39in that pit stop
57:40as well
57:41they certainly did
57:42there was plenty
57:43of damage
57:43that gap between
57:44Russell and Norris
57:45now down under
57:464 seconds
57:48he took a second
57:49out of George Russell
57:50who's on the
57:51medium tyre
57:52in that last lap
57:55I'm not convinced
57:56the medium tyre
57:57is a great tyre
57:58to be on here
57:59so
