Kevin Sheehan outlines the keys to victory for the Commanders as they host the depleted Eagles on Sunday Night Football, emphasizing Washington's massive rest advantage, the necessity of stuffing the run against backup quarterback Tanner McKee, and the urgency to fix a dead-last third-down offense.

00:00all right uh keys to a win over philadelphia on sunday night again the setup is a good one
00:09in the nfl more times than not the well-rested team uh with extreme rest meaning a bye week in
00:1714 days since their last game playing a team and this doesn't happen a lot we're you know the
00:24schedule makers really put philadelphia at a disadvantage in this game playing monday night
00:29on the road against a team coming off the bye week philadelphia's injury list looks like the longest
00:36of any team uh all season long damian pierce just went on the injured reserve he got hurt in the
00:42fourth quarter uh saquon barkley hasn't practiced davante smith hasn't practiced you know what
00:47their offense has been this year it's been decimated they're going through a lot of the same things
00:54our team went through last year they've just lost too many players but really too many important
01:02players starting quarterback starting running back starting wide receiver they haven't had their
01:07starting tight end for many games starting you know multiple positions along the offensive line
01:13starters gone including one in lane johnson who retired this is a good spot it's why washington
01:20has gone from a three and a half point favorite to a six and a half point favorite uh on
01:27sunday night
01:27that line may keep climbing these are those spots betters understand this normal fans who don't bet
01:34the sport don't it's okay it's just something that betters have been exposed to they understand why
01:40these lines all of a sudden start to move in big directions it's because of the massive net rest
01:48advantage and one team is limping into the game versus another team that isn't completely healthy
01:54they're without their starting left tackle and their wide receiver number one understood uh and
01:59javon kinlaw looks like he may not be uh ready and then burks and bates both might be in trouble
02:04as
02:05well we'll ask ben about that uh when he joins us at 12 but this is a good spot it's
02:11a good setup
02:12the games at home it's not like philly's got to travel a long way but this is one of those
02:18games
02:19that even if they were playing a good team with a good record it would be a good setup for
02:24a win
02:25all right key number one this is straight from my very good friend doc walker's playbook
02:33this is a manhood issue on sunday night you have to be the team that plays most intensely with the
02:43highest level of energy you've got to be the relentless team on the field if they come out
02:50as anything but the team on the field that is the clear-cut obvious team that has the highest level
02:56of
02:57hunger then we can really start to wonder whether or not quinn has lost some of that belief in the
03:06locker room i will be shocked if they're not flying around from the opening kickoff they've been doing
03:12that all year anyway this is the spot where you can't allow as doc would say you can't allow
03:24somebody philadelphia to come into your house sit down eat your food and take your family
03:31this is a manhood issue game period you've got to swarm them you've got to make them their backup
03:40players on offense think they don't belong in the league and it's got to happen from the jump number
03:46two more specifically uh this is always a key in most games but specifically in this game you have
03:54to stop the run and i have no idea who's going to be the running back eli mitchell you said
03:59they signed
04:00right is he going to be the starter he's never played for philly right or was he on the practice
04:05squad who knows eli mitchell no damian pierce no saquon barkley thank god no barkley because he can
04:13strap a team to his back he's capable of that and what was interesting about monday night's game
04:19is that barkley went out there less than 100 percent and he ran the ball exceptionally well
04:26in the football game he had seven carries for 62 yards and you know one of the reasons he had
04:33seven
04:34carries for 62 yards whoever is playing on the philadelphia offensive line they were moving the cowboys
04:42defensively backwards when barkley was in the game a little bit with damian pierce in the game
04:48uh but definitely more so with barkley in the game no barkley is a big deal no damian pierce is
04:54a big
04:54deal elijah mitchell is you know he's a zone run he's the guy that played with the 49ers for a
05:01few years
05:02you know he's in a in that kind of a system with sean manion as the as the oc who
05:07knows maybe he goes
05:08you know 22 for a buck 49 let's hope not because the reason stopping the run is so important on
05:16monday
05:17night and i think it's a good matchup for washington i think they should be able to stop the run
05:21they've
05:22been a good run stopping team but the reason it's so important is because tanner mckee cannot have
05:30third and threes third and fours third and fives they've got to be third and eights third and nines
05:36third and tens and beyond because if that's the case he's not going to succeed now dallas defensively
05:44is pretty bad washington i think has a better defense i do than dallas not by much but it's better
05:53and you know a tanner mckee in a down and distance situation that's unfavorable i don't see him
06:01succeeding i see a lot of check downs i see a lot of quick game a lot of screens on
06:06third and longs and
06:08then the key is to come up and tackle but if you stop the run and you put them into
06:13uncomfortable down
06:14and distance with tanner mckee at quarterback i think you can feast on philadelphia's offense
06:21don't let them run the football with elijah mitchell or anybody else i mean hell they might
06:29move elijah more back into the backfield i don't know what they're going to do they don't have a
06:33quarterback that can run he's not mobile he's big if you haven't watched tanner mckee remember
06:40he started the game for philadelphia at the end of last year against our team and there was a lot
06:45of
06:45hype in philadelphia before that start because there were a lot of people in philadelphia
06:50that believed that tanner mckee was capable of being a starter in the league they lost that game
06:57to josh johnson and company he was 21 of 40 for 241 yards a touchdown and a pick got sacked
07:04three
07:04times it's irrelevant in terms of this matchup because last year's defense was completely different
07:10the context of the game was completely different i'm just saying that he barely threw over 50 in his
07:17first start where people were excited to see what he had and then this year in his starts against
07:24carolina and dallas he's 49 of 80 for 426 yards that's 61.3 percent completions two tds and
07:33interception he's been he's been sacked five times his qbr was 32.3 against carolina 23.9 against dallas and
07:43these weren't two very good defensive teams he faced he had a bit of a running game against the cowboys
07:51and if you didn't watch that game the eagles had the lead 21 to 20 in the third quarter in
07:58a game that
07:59dallas probably felt like their season was on the line have to stop the run have to put tanner mckee
08:07in
08:08those unfavorable down and distance situations and then even though the pass rush hasn't gotten home
08:15even though the blitz rates have been high i think you can really rattle him and i think you can
08:20turn
08:20him over um number three after manhood issue game thank you doc walker and stopping the run and forcing
08:30tanner mckee to beat you number three is i think offensively you just have to protect the football
08:36i'm not suggesting a conservative game plan i'm just saying philadelphia as now a sizable underdog
08:45in this game coming into the game not rested and limping into it with all of the injuries
08:52what would give them reason to believe a couple of short fields a couple of scores off the short fields
08:59and all of a sudden you know they're up 14 to three in the second quarter or they're up you
09:05know
09:0510 to nothing in the second quarter have to protect the football the turnover margin we've talked about
09:13some of the keys to the rest of the season you know over the final 11 if they're going to
09:17win seven or
09:18eight i think g said they got to go nine and two i think eight and three would do it
09:23but seven and four
09:24might get them to a number that they're in it going into the final week but if they're going to
09:29do
09:29that they're going to have to continue to be on the positive end of the turnover margin category
09:35they're second in the league at plus six that's good it's got to continue but the turnover margin
09:41isn't just about takeaways it's about not giving it away and they only have two total turnovers on the
09:48season so far uh have to protect the football offensively you've got to convert on third
09:58downs and stay on the field it's not that i fear the philadelphia offense but they're just too many
10:06three and outs and washington right now is dead last in the league third down offense dead last in the
10:13league all right so we're talking about a team that has to get better on third down has to stay
10:20on the
10:20field if you want to look at sometimes why you're not rushing the football well it's because you're not
10:27getting enough cracks at it you're not getting enough plays you're not getting enough snaps to stay on
10:34the field you've got to convert on third down and washington right now dead last third downs in the
10:41league i didn't actually know that until i looked it up early this morning i knew it wasn't good i
10:48just didn't realize it was dead last they're converting at 30.9 percent on third down it's
10:56easily dead last easily uh believe it or not two playoff teams right now two winning teams denver and
11:05cleveland are also uh performing poorly on third downs the big difference there with those two
11:11teams they have dominant defensive teams uh lastly red zone efficiency washington not very good there
11:20either and they've got to score touchdowns i wouldn't be afraid to kick field goals in this game
11:25but you got to score some touchdowns and i think they will i feel good about the game i'm a
11:32little tight
11:33though like adam peters probably is
