Over the years, government programs to make homes more energy efficient have been aimed at homeowners. Now there is a push to install power saving technology in social housing across New South Wales.

00:14At Chipping Norton in Sydney's south-west, cold drinks are even more refreshing.
00:19So how hot does it get out here in the summer?
00:22We've had days out here up around 42, 43.
00:26Rodney Brown lives in social housing with his wife of 32 years, Tracy Lee,
00:31their two daughters, their son-in-law and their two granddaughters.
00:35He has a genetic condition where temperature extremes trigger paralysis,
00:39so he keeps the aircon running constantly.
00:42It is a lot of energy.
00:44A government program has taken the edge off his power bills,
00:47funding a heat pump water heater and a more efficient air conditioner.
00:50You don't have to have that worry of sitting like you in a sauna all day long.
00:56The state and federal governments have put in a combined $320 million
01:01to upgrade more than a third of the 95,000 social homes in New South Wales.
01:06We want to make sure that everyone can be part of the benefits
01:09that come from the clean energy transition.
01:11The upgrades can be anything from insulation to solar panels.
01:14Apart from reducing bills by potentially hundreds of dollars a year,
01:18they're helping to curb emissions
01:20as the state works towards a 50% reduction by 2030.
01:24I think at this point we're kind of at around sort of 42%.
01:28Programs like this help and every single house makes a contribution.
