00:00Trump wants to rename New Mexico. Kind of. Here's what's happening.
00:03On Sunday, he posted a map with Mexico crossed out and America written in,
00:08floating the new name New America.
00:10The Hill traced it back to a debunked, fake executive order,
00:13one of several versions that have made the rounds as the administration keeps renaming things.
00:18But he really can't do this, at least not by himself.
00:21Renaming a state takes its own legislature and a vote of its people.
00:24New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham told Fox News the name isn't up for debate
00:29and a New Mexico congressman said no president has the authority.
00:32But people really think he might be able to pull this off because he's done it twice already.
00:36There's a federal board that decides what the government calls places on its own maps
00:41and the Hill explains that's how the Gulf of Mexico became the Gulf of America last year.
00:45The board did exactly what he asked and barely anyone fought it.
00:48And it also helped that the Gulf is shared with other countries,
00:51which is more the president's turf, aka foreign affairs.
00:53He just ran the same play on Lake Ontario,
00:56though a Cornell law professor wrote that this time it crosses a line and could get sued.
01:00And that board only controls what the government calls things on its own maps.
01:04A state's actual name isn't a federal label, so no board and no president can touch it.
01:09But after all these name changes, what do you think is next?
