00:00How did Hitler rise to power? Adolf was born in 1889 in Austria. When he grew up, he wanted to
00:05be an artist, but got rejected from art school in Vienna. This resulted in some new world views.
00:11Since he became an ultra-German nationalist, he moved to Germany. Then World War I came. He fought
00:16on the battlefield and managed to survive. Germany lost the war and he believed that Jews and
00:21communists caused the collapse of Germany. He then worked as an army spy and was sent to observe a
00:26tiny political group, which he ended up joining. Thanks to his speaking abilities, he quickly
00:30became the party leader. Inflation rose and Germany's economy collapsed. Hitler saw this as a chance to
00:36take over the government. However, his attempt failed and he went to prison for nine months,
00:41where he had time to write a book. Then the Great Depression came and unemployment skyrocketed,
00:46allowing the Nazis to become the most popular party. Hitler became chancellor and once President
00:50Hindenburg died, he combined both roles. With the enabling act giving him full control,
00:56he became a dictator and began preparing Germany for war.
