Satya Niketan PG Collapse: 3 Arrested, 5 MCD Officials Suspended, Delhi Orders Audit

Following the collapse of a paying guest accommodation in Satya Niketan, Delhi authorities arrested the building owner Hariram Gupta, his wife Urmila Gupta, and their son Mahesh Gupta. During interrogation, officials learned the building collapsed while renovation work was being carried out in the basement. A 24-hour rescue operation rescued twelve individuals, including nine students and three labourers, while seven people were declared brought dead at the hospital. In response, five Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials, including a Deputy Commissioner and a Superintending Engineer, have been suspended. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced structural audits of existing PG buildings, a review of PG regulations, and plans to explore student accommodation options, including vacant Delhi Development Authority housing.

00:00So the PG collapse in Satya Niketan has once again raised serious questions over Delhi's safety rules.

00:06Three arrests have been made in the case so far.

00:09Building owner Hari Ram Gupta and his wife Urmila Gupta and their son Mahesh Gupta.

00:13All three arrested were produced at the judge's residence last night.

00:17Hari Ram Gupta and Urmila Gupta have been sent to 14 days of judicial custody,

00:21while their son Mahesh Gupta has been remanded to two days police custody.

00:25During examination, it was found that the property is registered under Urmila's name.

00:30The PG was being run by Hari Ram and his son.

00:33Hari Ram also had electricity connections of two floors under his name.

00:37After the collapse, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta held a joint review meeting

00:41chaired by Delhi Lieutenant Governor on building safety and PG regulations across Delhi.

00:47The Chief Minister announced after the meet that structural audits of existing PG buildings

00:51will be carried out to ensure the safety and security of the students.

00:55The government will also review PG rules, explore more student accommodation

01:00and examine the use of vacant DDA housing for students.

01:04Meanwhile, five MCD officials have also been suspended,

01:06including Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar and Superintendent Engineer Ranveer Singh.

01:13But the real test for authorities now is whether safety rules will finally be enforced

01:18before another disaster strikes or will these measures remain reduced

01:21to yet another post-tragedy crackdown.
