A building collapse in Delhi's Satya Niketan claimed the lives of seven students, prompting Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to order structural audits of paying guest accommodations across key student hubs. The areas under scrutiny include Mukherjee Nagar, Rajendra Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Satya Niketan, and Saket. Citywide inspections will assess structural stability, and unsafe properties will face sealing. The deceased students from Delhi University colleges include Arpit George, Akshat Yadav, Yuvraj Soni, Abhishek Kumar, and Pawan Kumar. An India Today ground check near the disaster site revealed severe hazards, including an adjacent tilted building supported merely by iron pillars, narrow lanes, webbed overhead wiring, lack of emergency exits, and multi-storey hostels constructed illegally on compact plots.

01:11Let's also now understand how safe are your PG's,
01:16are these PG's which are situated in these student-dense areas in the national capital.
01:21So, the Delhi government has now swung into action.
01:26Structural audits have been ordered in key student hubs.
01:29Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered the safety checks of the PG's in major student areas.
01:35Mukherjee Nagar, Rajendra Nagar, Lakshmi Nagar, Satyaniket and Saketha.
01:39These student-heavy areas will be among the key locations under scrutiny.
01:42In fact, PG's in student hubs will be audited, including these areas with high concentration of students.
01:49All PG's will face structural audits.
01:52So, these PG buildings across Delhi will be checked for their structural safety,
01:56because that was one of the major concerns that we've witnessed in this incident.
02:00And a city-wide check will be conducted.
02:04Special focus will be on the high-risk areas.
02:07In fact, structural stability will be checked,
02:09and the unsafe PG's will face sealing.
02:13So, the PG's which will be found unsafe could be sealed to protect the students and the residents.
02:19So, seven lives were lost in the Satyaniketan collapse,
02:22raising some very serious questions over the safety of student housing across the national capital.
02:28But our reporters find more danger beyond the collapsed site,
02:32from a building propped up with iron pillars to cramped student accommodations.
02:37How many more buildings are waiting to become the next disaster?
02:41Here is a reality check. Take a look.
02:53At least seven dead.
02:56A building down.
02:58And just next door, another building being held up by iron pillars.
03:05This building was evacuated on Sunday.
03:09It's tilted.
03:10The balcony is a risk.
03:13And the iron pillars are now its only visible support.
03:36This building is a building.
03:38The building of Bagal was standing in support and now this building has been shown a little
03:43bit.
03:45All of the people in this building were rescued.
03:51Look around, narrow lanes, wires criss-crossing overhead.
03:56Buildings packed wall to wall.
04:00Welcome to that one staircase that brings you to the other building.
04:04This is another building which is 111.
04:07So 110 Makan number and 111 Makan number.
04:11Forget about emergency exit.
04:13Forget about it.
04:14Even the staircase you can see they don't even have those pillars or railings.
04:20And welcome to the entrance.
04:22This is a web of wire and you can see this beam.
04:26This is just two buildings away from the building that has collapsed.
04:32Look at this beam on the ground floor and look at the ceiling.
04:39At another hostel near the collapsed site, the board has now been removed.
04:45I'll just try and show you on the camera of India today another property that is being
04:50operated by the same owner, hostel days.
04:53And over here, yet again, same story.
04:56If I could just pan the camera and you'll get an idea that this is a very small area, probably
05:02a 25 to 50 yard area in which this entire hostel has been made.
05:07And if you could look all the way up, this is a ground plus five floor building.
05:11Absolutely, absolutely illegal.
05:14There is no way that a building of such a height is allowed to be built over here.
05:21The big question, how many more tragedies will it take before we wake up?
05:27Because the next tragedy may already be in the making.
05:34With Bosme Singh, Jitendra Bahadur and Anshul Singh, Bureau Report, India Today.
