A building collapsed in Old Delhi's bustling Chawri Bazar during the festive shopping season, leaving two people dead and others injured. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta confirmed that an FIR has been registered against the contractor and ordered the immediate suspension of a junior engineer and an assistant engineer from the municipal corporation. The Chief Minister stressed that ignoring safety and security while constructing structures proves fatal to human life, adding that any official overlooking negligence will not be spared. Rescuers faced severe operational challenges navigating the narrow bylanes of Old Delhi, forcing emergency teams to clear heavy debris by hand without heavy machinery. The tragedy comes roughly two months after a similar building collapse in Satyaniketan, raising questions over municipal oversight and accountability regarding unauthorised construction work across the national capital.

00:00A building has collapsed in old Delhi's Chauri Bazaar at a time of festive season.
00:04Chauri Bazaar, known for the massive wholesale or retail shopping, is the busiest at this time of the year.
00:11And a building has collapsed, two people confirmed dead.
00:14That's the big news break that is coming here on India Today on the news break,
00:18where Delhi Chief Minister has taken action after the building crashed.
00:22But what is the action that we are looking at?
00:25Junior engineer and an assistant engineer has been suspended.
00:29Also the Delhi Chief Minister is saying, one injured, two dead in building collapsed.
00:33Rekha Gupta says, FR has been registered against the contractor as well.
00:37According to our information, there was under construction work that was going on at this building.
00:41The CM says, will not spare those responsible for negligence.
00:46Two people have confirmed died, one is injured, survived, has been pulled out.
00:50FR has been registered against the contractor.
00:53A JE and AE, which is junior engineer and assistant engineer, have been suspended.
00:57Those responsible will not be spared.
00:59But that's a big question.
01:00The word junior, the word assistant here, what about the top leadership?
01:07What about the ones who are to be held accountable as much as the junior engineers?
01:12Where was this building located?
01:13What kind of a building was this?
01:15What kind of an under construction work was going on?
01:17But let's first listen in to Delhi Chief Minister.
01:48The
01:49the security card hand cut a week and I put it all over the adhikari yeah
01:54hopper another and I'll carry a seal a pervahy comes over Bacchan in Jaga
02:00India today is the Shambhavi Srivastava is joining me for the latest on that
02:04Shambhavi of course the big question then again becomes is why this kind of
02:07an action of simply suspension of the engineers is that enough is this
02:10protocol because this comes barely two months after what happened in Satya
02:14Niketan
02:20absolutely absolutely given that this is now the second incident in the past
02:24couple of months and all these actions which follows later like in there's a
02:29suspension of the assistant engineer and the junior engineer or filing asking for
02:33an inquiry or filing of an FIR all of it seems too little too late given that
02:39here two people have already lost their lives four are injured in the building
02:43collapse of the five-story building collapse at Satya Niketan seven people
02:47lost their lives there were several severely injured and there was
02:51constantly even right now they're trying to figure out if somebody is still left
02:55under the debris so such situation and where MCD has reportedly said that no
03:01sanction no plan construction plan was sanctioned so why the building in the
03:06first place and that too if you hear the accounts of the people who heard the loud
03:12noise when the building fell they went out and they saw that several cement slabs
03:17and that too those slabs are very heavy those heavy cement slabs had fallen down
03:23broken and not one not two but several of them so all of this and then the
03:29suspension of the engineer or the filing of an FIR against the constructor all of it
03:36seems too little too late Shambhavi keep tracking the latest on that and just stay
03:41on with me because I want to look at these visuals and let's put it on our
03:44screens to help the viewer understand the gravity of the situation that we are
03:47looking at remember this is old Delhi purani Delhi any Delhiwala knows what old
03:52Delhi and Chaudi Bazaar Chandani Chowk is at this point it's busiest shoppers
03:57shopkeepers bustling markets there sometimes there's no space to even walk
04:02as well and at a time like this and at a time like this when a building
04:07collapses remember it would be most likely whatever work was happening there
04:11would be workers at that location Shambhavi are we looking at perhaps more
04:16people who should be and could be rescued in time time is of essence here
04:19because the previous report by Anshul Singh also suggested that you cannot take
04:23heavy machinery and equipments into these narrow by lanes which means it has to
04:27be work done by the rescue personnel by hand and that could delay the procedure
04:37well yes again the similarity between both these incidents are eerie given that
04:43of course that was a narrow lane as well here the narrow lanes of purani Delhi it is
04:47basically like Varanasi those narrow lanes are in the old Delhi and near the
04:53Chaudi Bazaar and all of it so any kind of heavy mechanical machinery is will be
04:59very difficult to be of course taken inside so all the it just delays the
05:04entire process if at all by any chance unfortunate chance that there is somebody
05:10still stuck under the debris by the time the NDRF the fire services and the
05:15respective teams will manage to get them out or will manage to do all the work by
05:20their own hands by some portable equipments and not the heavy machinery
05:25which would have made this entire exercise much much easier and would have
05:29saved lives that why is it that we always learn after an incident happens
05:35all Delhi we know that there are exposed wires we know that while there are
05:39historical buildings there are also added encroachments to that there are
05:44dilapidated buildings as well why shouldn't action be taken in time why must we
05:48lose lives of anyone constantly that this is happening in Delhi we'll be tracking
05:52that and more Shambhavi appreciate you joining us Shambhavi and Anshul have been
05:55reporting from on the location I have more news coming in let's take a look at that
