00:02Patrick Rainford fell while climbing over a fence at his Mount Gambier home two weeks ago.
00:07I've caught my toe on the top of the fence and then sort of gone slightly airborne and landed on
00:13the concrete on my hip and my knee.
00:15After being treated at the local hospital, he was told he needed to go to Flinders Medical Centre for surgery
00:20and to begin fasting.
00:22The Royal Flying Doctors came in at 12.30am on the Thursday morning and said we're going to get you
00:28to Adelaide.
00:29I was told by Mount Gambier staff that there was a triage ready, the bed was ready.
00:34But on arrival at Adelaide Airport at 2am, there was now no bed available.
00:38He remained in care at the Royal Flying Doctor service for seven hours before being taken to Flinders, only to
00:45be rammed again for several more hours.
00:47I hadn't eaten so all my acid in my body was refluxing so I was in excruciating pain with that
00:53as well and just being given ice chips.
00:55The disability pensioner finally underwent surgery and is recovering at home.
01:00SA Health and the State Government have apologised and the case is being reviewed.
01:05I'd like to apologise to Patrick for the delays that he experienced in their transfer.
01:10Patrick's case occurred as South Australia recorded its worst ever monthly ramping figures with patients spending nearly 6,000 hours
01:20stuck in ambulances outside hospitals in August.
01:24Those ramping figures are heavily influenced by the issues that the entire country has with aged care and access for
01:31our older people at the present time.
01:33You can watch it on the news, you can hear stories but until it happens to yourself that's when reality
01:39really strikes and you feel very vulnerable.
