00:00For several students who come from outside Delhi to study in South Campus of Delhi University,
00:07I can see three students sitting here.
00:10Where are you from?
00:11From which state of India?
00:12Rajasthan, West Bengal.
00:14I'm from UP.
00:16So three different states.
00:18And you are here.
00:19This is your PG?
00:20Okay.
00:21So did you get calls from your parents?
00:24Do you want to leave or leave?
00:25Yeah, like temporarily you have to move out and leave and leave a little bit until it's settled.
00:32Please leave.
00:34So what do you think?
00:36We will go now, but what will happen later?
00:40In the long run, what is the solution for it?
00:44I don't have any other option.
00:46Because we can leave for now, PG.
00:49But then we have to study another year.
00:51So where are we going from?
00:53We don't have any other options.
00:55And if you say, I mean, if you leave PG here,
00:57So all of them are PG here.
00:58All of them are 4-5 floors.
01:00All of them are like this.
01:02All of them are like this.
01:02All of them are like this.
01:03So there is no option here.
01:05We can go temporarily.
01:06But then we have to go back.
01:08And it's not just this locality.
01:09Every student area that you see in Delhi has the same condition.
01:12Same roads, same overflowing sewage, same dilipated houses,
01:16where students are forced to pay like 15,000, 16,000 just to study.
01:19Like people are saying leave Satya Nikitan and go to Anand Nikitan.
01:22But the price is there.
01:23Like it starts from 30,000.
01:24It is not possible for everyone to pay 30,000 monthly just to study here.
01:2830,000 for one bed actually.
01:29The second bed in the same room is of 30,000.
01:33So they are making so much money from one room only.
01:37Rent prices are very shocking here.
01:40And what conditions do we have to stay here?
01:42Sometimes there is something.
01:43We have a single exit.
01:45If there is always an emergency,
01:46we don't have any plans here.
01:49The water is so bad here.
01:52The food is so bad here.
01:53The food is so bad here.
01:54You have no solution for it.
01:56Because our PG here is the same.
01:58And who do you complain to?
01:59You have no one.
02:00Like if I am facing any kind of problem,
02:01they won't pay,
02:02they won't return my security.
02:03And who do I complain to at last?
02:04I need my money back at least.
02:06So they do that.
02:06They threaten you.
02:07That they will not return the security money.
02:09And what is the security money like?
02:11It's like equal to your monthly payment.
02:13One month.
02:14Yeah.
02:14So if I am paying 15,000 rent,
02:16I mean,
02:17when I have PG to,
02:18I am going to PG to,
02:19and if I am giving 15,000 rent,
02:21then I have to give 15,000 security deposit.
02:23So I have to pay 30,000 for one day.
02:26And then they say,
02:27yes,
02:28if you stay for such a month,
02:29there is a contract for 12 months,
02:30or 10 months.
02:31If you stay for such a time,
02:33and then after the contract,
02:34then you leave the security money.
02:37They do not return it.
02:42You heard from the students who live in various PG accommodations,
02:46in Satya Niketan.
02:48These lanes,
02:49certainly,
02:50many would say that there is a great degree of concern among them.
02:55And rightly so.
02:56Why not?
02:57Because it's about safety and security.
02:58And this incident happened on a Sunday,
03:00when the students were inside their PG accommodation.
03:04On a working day,
03:06perhaps,
03:07they would have been outside.
03:09But,
03:10in that building,
03:11which is,
03:12which was there,
03:13right behind me,
03:14renovation work was going on.
03:16Remember,
03:17in 2022,
03:19there was a building collapse,
03:21which had happened in Satya Niketan,
03:22which killed two laborers,
03:24who were involved in that renovation activity.
03:26Questions at that time were raised about who allowed this kind of permission.
03:31Was permission granted at all?
03:33Questions being raised about the MCD officials,
03:37who came,
03:38or who come often to inspect this area.
03:40Even as we speak,
03:42inspection is going on.
03:43But we are told that inspection is not going on by MCD officials,
03:47but it is going on by locals.
03:50In fact,
03:51those who run these buildings have been told to carry on internal audit.
03:56A news coming in,
03:57which is now,
03:58is of the Delhi High Court,
04:00which has called the Satya Niketan building collapse incident as unfortunate.
04:05And Delhi High Court saying that tragedy could have been avoided.
04:08It has gone on to say that,
04:10give details of action taken against erring officials.
04:13It has issued notice to the Delhi University,
04:16and also to the Delhi government.
04:19And it has asked a number of questions,
04:21which includes,
04:22how does the government know if a flat is being rented out as a PG?
04:27And a number of these questions,
04:29which are now being asked to the MCD commissioner.
04:32Why action not taken so far?
04:35Why is it that just a month ago,
04:38Delhi witnessed another horrific incident of a building which went ablaze,
04:44with 21 people inside that in South Delhi.
04:47After that again,
04:48the Delhi government promised strict actions,
04:51but no action was taken.
04:52We are seeing another incident.
04:55The question is,
04:56how many more lives,
04:57till a concrete action,
05:01a decisive action is taken by the Delhi government.
05:04Our live reportage from Delhi,
05:07from South Campus,
05:09and in and around this area,
05:10which is Satya Niketan,
05:11will continue,
05:12a quick break,
05:13and then Pooja returns on the other side.
