00:00I think like from the government side there's no steps that they have been taken till now so such that's
00:05very sad.
00:06We don't feel connected. Sometimes we want our people to be there now.
00:12Across all the political student bodies, ABBP, NSUI or the left,
00:17I haven't heard anyone raising the issue of starting up a special cell or a unit so that there is,
00:24you know,
00:25some awareness should be spread around discrimination.
00:28Many stereotypes against us.
00:30Sometimes the price, there is a price discrimination against us because maybe we are not that well-versed in Hindi
00:35and all,
00:36so they'll charge us extra for rent and all. I have seen that.
00:39I'm right now in front of the law faculty of the North Campus of Delhi University.
00:43I have some students here from Northeast and we're going to speak with them and ask them
00:47what are the issues that they will be voting on, what is the change they want to see in the
00:54campus life in Delhi University or Delhi in general.
00:57What do you have to say? Your name?
00:59My name is Nang Jitong Shan. I'm from Assam. I study in CLC.
01:03I think just because I'm not facing the issue doesn't mean that people are not facing it.
01:08I think there are many Northeasterners who have faced racism.
01:11Not only racism, I think many forms of discrimination because they feel left out in the campus.
01:16or let's say like in many of the events also they don't find their issues being raised.
01:21So that is one issue I think that is particularly I have come across that we don't find like our
01:29issues being raised.
01:30Like there are some issues which only Northeastern face.
01:33But when it comes to student politics we also see that a lot of we usually don't see anyone from
01:39Northeast fighting elections.
01:41Do you think that should also change more and more people from Northeast should also be a part of the
01:46student bodies?
01:47Yes, I think I strongly believe that more people from Northeast should contest election because otherwise this won't be inclusive.
01:55Because there are lots of Northeastern students studying in DU but we don't find many like people contesting whether boy
02:05or a girl it doesn't matter but we don't find them.
02:07So in that way what happens is that we don't feel connected sometimes we want our people to be there
02:14now.
02:15You don't feel that your representation is there and your issues because across all the political student bodies ABBP NSUI
02:24or the left.
02:25I haven't heard anyone raising the issue of starting up a special cell or a unit so that there is
02:32you know some awareness should be spread around around discrimination.
02:35Especially for people who have come from Northeast.
02:38What do you think about this?
02:40Yes, there is lot of there are lots of stereotypes and there are lots of like many stereotypes against us.
02:48So I think if there is a special cell or if there are events organized around our like issues then
02:55I think many more people would know about us and will try to like see us more as like not
03:01other like more as similar to them.
03:04So and there are more issues not only about Northeastern I think as a student also we see a lot
03:08of issues which have not been like handled very well.
03:12If we talk about campus politics or and many other issues like.
03:16Would you like to talk about them?
03:19Issues like I think there are very basic issues which have not been addressed like the washroom cleanliness issue.
03:27I think this has always been there in the like election manifest and all.
03:31Are the washrooms dirty?
03:32Yes.
03:33But the thing is that we are not able to overcome from that issue.
03:38Like it is not going to be a different issue.
03:41Like it is not going to be a different issue.
03:41It is not going to be a different issue.
03:41In that same thing it is like the washroom.
03:43It is a small small small small.
03:45So we need more to focus on that basic things.
03:50Like it is a different issue.
03:53I have to say that.
03:54Actually I wanted to raise a specific issue with us Northeastern as well.
03:58With regards to housing and rent.
04:00As we all know DU cannot give everyone hostel.
04:03I think you have seen what happened in Satya Nikita.
04:05People are forced to take PG's and all.
04:07And even for us there is very limited seats for us in Northeastern as a hostel and all.
04:11So we are being forced to go inside Vijayanagar, Kamranagar to find PG's and all.
04:18And sometimes the price, there is a price discrimination against us.
04:21Because maybe we are not that well versed in Hindi and all.
04:24So they will charge us extra for rent and all.
04:26I have seen that.
04:26And there is interference regarding the food also you eat.
04:30Right?
04:31Yeah interference there is there.
04:32See we respect people's food choices as well.
04:34But they also need to respect our food choices as well.
04:37So that is what.
04:38What do you have to say?
04:39Yeah like I feel like our side also.
04:42They should respect from our part also.
04:45Like the type of food we eat.
04:47And how we like that part itself.
04:50And then plus we don't know like Hindi like over here.
04:52I am a first year student myself.
04:54And then when we go and search for all these PG's.
04:56And rent they are charging us at a very high rate.
05:00And plus with the security deposit we have to give them.
05:02And then we don't get all that back.
05:04So even if like we have all always heard like Delhi University is very cheap.
05:10Very affordable.
05:10But then when it comes to all the place to stay.
05:13It's very difficult.
05:14Because we don't have proper hostel.
05:16And plus the seats in the hostels also that we have here.
05:19It's very limited actually.
05:20And plus we come very far.
05:22The travelling expenses that we have to spend over here.
05:25And then plus now the accommodation is very difficult for us I feel.
05:29So students from North East play an important part of the Delhi University.
05:35When I was studying in Delhi University.
05:37Of course there were a lot of students around me from North East.
05:40But here's the thing.
05:41We don't see them in representation.
05:44No one talks about their issues.
05:46The discrimination they face.
05:48Be it inside the campus or outside the campus.
05:50When it comes to rent they face extra discrimination.
05:53Their food choices are interfered with.
05:56So you know they particularly face a lot more issues than someone who is from North of India.
06:03And that is what we spoke with these students from North East.
06:07And of course Doosu polls are in full swing.
06:10This time such issues haven't been raised.
06:12The focus has been on Satya Niketan tragedy.
06:15And more and more hostel accommodation for students.
06:19With camera person Lakshai, Tanish Punjabi for One India.
06:33I'm seeing you in Prinzip to pick all the rim.
06:33The motivation to make the union and trying all the rules...
06:34At the end.
